Lab 4
Sky Map in Real Time 2
Purpose:
To learn how a Sky Map can be used to locate and identify the location
of a zodiac constellation during the month with which it is associated.
Theory:
The Sun is in the zodiac constellation during the month with which that
zodiac constellation is associated. Typically, the Sun is in the same zodiac
constellation from about the 20
th
of one month to the 20
th
of the next
month. Therefore one can see that a zodiac constellation will “rise” close
to sunrise and will “set” close to sunset during its associated month.
One can then use a Sky Map as an efficient reference for determining the
zodiac constellation of a particular month.
Some interesting groups of constellations on a sky map are:
Zodiac Constellations: Constellations that surround the circumference of the
ecliptic (path of the Sun’s apparent motion). The zodiac constellations are
specifically:
Capricornus, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer,
Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Ophiucius,
and
Sagittarius
.
Procedure:
Go to one of the three following browsers:
Mozilla Firefox
, or
Google Chrome
, or
Microsoft Edge
Type in the url:
https://www.google.com
Type in the google search box:
www.stelvision.com/en/sky - map/
Select and click-on “Sky Map in Real Time |Stelvision”
You should now be at the
sky – map
page.
