The Helping Process Essay Nusreen Navarro SWK- 525: Generalist Social Work Practice I: Working with Individuals and Systems College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Grand Canyon University Chelsea Penne October 13, 2023 1
The Helping Process Essay Known theories, concepts, constructs, and principles are the basis of the Multisystem Practice (MSP) model. This model is based on several critical theories, namely the General Systems Theory and the Social Systems Theory, as the foundation of the model. The Social Systems Theory extends the General Systems Theory by combining concepts such as energy and systems with the principle of constructive interaction, to focus on interpersonal exchanges based on the concepts of energy and systems. To influence one's viewpoint, principles can be applied once they have been developed to aid an individual in influencing their viewpoint (Gasker, 2019). From a socio-ecological perspective, the importance of collaboration among systems is one of the key elements of the Ecological Perspective (Gasker, 2019), which derives from the Social Systems and General Systems Theories. It has been recognized that social workers (individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities) will be better equipped if they make use of the Person-in-Environment (PIE) perspective to identify the needs of their clients. While there will always be weaknesses in the program, such as the fact that clients' strengths and resources are not emphasized when social workers are assisting them in doing their jobs, PIE has had a significant impact on society in general (Gasker, 2019). To create a language that unites all social workers, PIE has developed a language that enables them to more closely understand how people interact with the systems around them. A crucial role that families play in social work has long been recognized as one of the most important aspects of the field. Family-centered practice has become an integral part of generalist practice over the past decade as an alternative to the traditional focus on families as a social institution and a part of the generalist model. It is possible to develop policies, conduct research, evaluate programs, design strategies, and practice methods bearing in mind the family- 2
centered perspective to develop their practices and programs. To evaluate a substance abuse treatment facility's effectiveness, social workers may assess the extent to which clients are fulfilling their roles as caregivers, parents, and providers during the process of evaluating the facility's effectiveness. It is believed that using this approach will allow the possibility for policies to be examined more carefully concerning the collaboration with the clients' families, as well as a higher level of participation by the families in the change process for the clients. Everyone can define their own family based on their own unique needs, as defined by the FIE concept, according to the needs they have as individuals. In the context of family relationships, formal adoptions, adoptions between people of the same gender, adoptions between generations, and even friendships among the same generation can begin the process. As PIE (person-in- environment) state, individuals and systems interact in countless ways to create energy, which ties in with its conceptualization of personal in nature. There is a strong theoretical foundation on which generalist social workers operate, and this can be seen in their research, policy, and practice. Several theories are incorporated into this model, including general theory about systems, social theory about social systems, ecological theory about ecological systems, performance theory about strengths, person-in-environment theories, family-in-environment theories, and meta-theory about meta-practices (Gasker, 2019). It is necessary to complete eight stages of the change process to achieve the planned outcome. Since several systems will be interdependent during the following steps, they should be considered interactive. It is necessary for the social worker to assess their own characteristics prior to meeting with their client (Gasker, 2019) to prepare for the meeting with them. To determine the impact these factors may have on the approach they might take towards a client, it would be a good idea to examine their skills, values, 3
and characteristics at the outset of this process. MSP recommends to the social worker to ensure that they take into consideration the individual's strengths, limitations, feelings, and thoughts at the same time as assessing the systems surrounding him or her. Second, a shared space is created to benefit two different systems by enabling them to interact in a way that both systems haven't come across before (Gasker, 2019). Consequently, you will be able to establish a beneficial relationship with the other party and start collaborating with the goal of effecting change as a result. Considering the external environment in which the individual lives is also an important aspect of the work of the social worker. A support system can include a family, friends, and other professionals who play a significant role in the process. Furthermore, it is paramount for the social worker to provide support and resources to the individual to ensure that he or she achieves their goals. Thirdly, during the assessment phase, a client perception analysis is conducted to determine the way the client perceives the interaction between the client's system and various environmental scenarios. As part of this process, it is necessary for an organization to identify the interactions among the different systems to successfully address the challenges that its clients or systems face. The fourth stage of the process involves the collaboration between the client and the team to determine how the goals will be achieved in the fourth stage of the process (Gasker, 2019) and to set the goals together. Identification of the most important objectives and determining how they will be achieved are imperative for success to be achieved. As a MSP recommendation, it recommends that the client plan for issues that arise at the intersection between their environmental systems and their client's systems, as well as attempting to find goals that relate to the interactions between the various ecological systems within the client's systems. As soon as the worker and client have completed this process, they will agree to create 4
