Zachariah Smith 01/20/2024 Hum-100 2-2 Project Proposal Van Gogh's Starry Night is the cultural piece of art I have chosen for this project proposal. I think that Van Gogh's use of strong, vibrant colors is what sets this piece of art apart. The sky is a flurry of white, yellow, and blue tones, while the village below it is dark and unmoved. It is well known for having vibrant, flowing smudges. The spiral patterns in the sky give the feeling of movement and life. The chaotic and swirling sky aloft appears to be in stark contrast to the tranquil and orderly neighborhood. One of the most striking aspects of the picture is the extreme contrast. The intent behind Van Gogh's Starry Night is a hotly debated subject among cultural historians. Some believe he was trying to express his innermost feelings and psychological state, while the majority interpret it as a sign of his metaphysical beliefs or his love of the natural world. Irrespective of Van Gogh's exact objectives, he succeeded in creating a powerful work of art that endures forever. Starry Night resonates with viewers because of its unique, lyrical language and wide range of emotions. It demonstrates Van Gogh's creative ability and his ability to convey complex emotions and ideas in his paintings. The picture The Prayer at Valley Forge by Arnold Friberg is the subsequent piece of historically significant artwork that I have chosen that I am unfamiliar with. In the picture "The Prayer at
Valley Forge" by Arnold Friberg, George Washington is seen praying during the American Revolutionary War. By approaching this image from a humanities viewpoint, we can understand its historical context, cultural significance, and artistic intentions. The artwork represents a critical juncture in American history when the Continental Army was struggling during the harsh winter of 1777–1778. The scenery makes the resilience and hope depicted in the picture clearer. Friberg attempted to convey Washington's power and spirit. The picture has come to represent Americans' persistence and faith in God. Its continued popularity may be ascribed to the fact that it resonates with a wide range of values and viewpoints. Understanding creative works helps us to appreciate the diversity and complexity of human life. This realization can promote compassion and respect for people from different cultural origins. Analyzing creative works improves our ability to reason critically, interpret symbols, and understand context. These are useful skills to possess in many different situations. Seeing a range of artistic creations may inspire creativity by sparking new ideas and points of view. The humanities provide a helpful framework for understanding artistic works like "The Prayer at Valley Forge". This approach not only deepens our comprehension of great works but also bestows upon us fresh perspectives and skill sets that enhance our overall standard of existence.
