1. The film highlights some urgent environmental problems attributable to human-driven climate change. Describe one of these environmental problems present in the film, its harmful impacts on the local community, and how people in that community are responding to its challenges. The sea levels rising in the Kiribati islands is from human-driven climate change. On the island we see the government speaking out about the sea-levels rising and we see many people on the island funded by the catholic church to help educate and understand the issues from climate-change.  As they travel to different islands we see how the natives are affected as their coconut farms have depleted and become unusable because the saltwater has risen to the farms. We see Dr. Susie talks to older generations to understand how fast the changes have come as the locals describe that the waters have never been this close to the homes and farms before. We hear from the locals that they fear for their land as the water rises and they can't prevent it and how it's devastated their community and way of life. We see the people trying to fight the tides with sea walls of concrete but the water is breaking to walk or reach over it. 2. The film conveys much information, visual and otherwise, about cultural differences and diversity. Describe new information you learned from the film about a cultural practice or belief of any of the cultural groups featured in the film and explain why it interested you. The kiribati culture interested me with their celebrations that are talked about and how they view their community. When they arrived on the island they spoke with a  local about how many things are celebrated such as birthday and holidays but as well as girls first menstruation they have a large celebration to honor her coming into her womanhood which is fascinating because of how different it is form my own culture in america as periods tend to have a different stigma behind them that they shouldn't be discussed or talked about. You can also see in the film how the Kiribati people view everyone in their community as family as shown through their songs and the way they treat each other. Katie even spoke about how children run around freely as the people view children as children of the community as everyone helps each other with them very differently from American culture with children. 3. This film highlights one the role(s) that anthropology can play outside of the classroom, in this case, applying anthropological knowledge to working with communities facing climate-driven environmental problems. What is another way the something you have learn in class this semester could be applied in a setting outside of academia? Describe how anthropology could help to solve a problem or aid a community in need. The main thing I have learned through this course is that anthropology is about respectfully learning about different cultures and people. Outside of an academic setting anthropology is still helpful to me because it has taught me how to understand and be respectful of other cultures I encounter. As i plan to travel more as I get older I want to be able to meet the local people of those places and understand their cultures and traditions without being rude or overstepping so using the rules of applied anthropology and how anthropologist from north america should encounter different cultures can help me learn respectfully. Anthropology can also help solve problems and aid communities. This is done heavily by getting a full understanding of a different culture and their people to then understand an issue and how it affects the people and their way of life. We saw this many times in the anthropologist film as Dr.Susie traveled and learned how and why climate-change has affected the normal way of life of the people there and the urgency of it. By sharing this information and coming together with other scientists and anthropologists
we can spread information on the issues and how to help and give people access and an easy way to help and be involved.
