1. Review the photos in the Lab 15 Exercise Image Library on p. 451 and answer the following questions. Examine the Australopithecus sediba skeleton. Describe at least two traits that Au. sediba shares with other australopiths (such as Au. africanus or Au. afarensis ). Two traits that Au. sediba share with other Australopiths are a small cranial capacity and body size. They also share a narrow upper chest. 2. Describe at least two traits that Au. sediba shares with members of the Homo genus. Two traits that Au. sediba shares with members of the Homo genus are wide pelvis and smaller teeth than Australopiths. 3. What do your answers suggest about the evolutionary relationship between these species? The resemblance of the features indicates an evolutionary relationship evolved from a shared ancestor. 4. Au. sediba lived in southern Africa around 2 mya. When did the first members of the Homo genus appear? And where? The first members of the Homo genus appeared 2.5 million years ago in Eastern and Southern Africa. 5. Does your answer change your interpretation of the relationship between Au. sediba and the members of the Homo genus? Why or why not? My answer changed my interpretation of the relationship between Au. sediba and the members of the Homo genus because all the members of the Homo genus is closely related to Au. sediba. Au. sediba may be a more derived form of the Australopiths but did not evolve to the Homo genus.
