Name: Date: Assessment Task: Carrying Capacity and the Blanding’s Turtle Blanding’s turtles ( Emydoidea blandingii ) are medium-sized turtles that are native to the Great Lakes and midwestern United States. Some of their key characteristics are their yellow necks and dark shells, and they feed on crayfish, snails, and insects. Their population has been declining due to a variety of factors, including habitat fragmentation by new neighborhoods, predation by large mammals, and illegal poaching for the pet trade. A prairie wetland preserve outside of Chicago, IL has been tracking a population of Blanding’s turtles since 1970, and recently the data has been made available to the public. Year Blanding’s Turtle Population Year Blanding’s Turtle Population 1970 198 1995 92 1975 205 2000 51 1980 230 2005 29 1985 201 2010 15 1990 153 2015 9 Create a line graph that shows the change in population of Blanding’s turtles over time.
Questions: 1. Explain how limiting factors may have affected the Blanding’s turtle population at the wetland park, using evidence from the data and reasoning to support your argument. 2. Residential neighborhoods were built near the wetland park starting in 1980. Due to the available food from garbage, the raccoon population has increased. Raccoons have been known to eat small turtles that have shells smaller than 4 inches in width. Explain how the raccoon population has affected the carrying capacity of the turtles over time.
