Announcements HW 3 due Wednesday Quiz 1: Feb 22nd Penalties for RRRT lab begin: Feb. 27th The Nature of Science How do you define science? The process of studying that which is unknown in order to explain something about the nature of the universe. The process of science: Mystery Tube Its blue A cylinder Making Observations/Gathering Data Observations: collecting information about natural phenomena. Through observations one can learn to compare, contrast, and note similarities and differences Inferences: Conclusions based on evidence about events that have already occurred Oftentimes we can do more than just simply observe the object we’re trying to understand Let’s Create A Law of Strings G Laws Describes a relationship between two or more things A scientific law is an observed and tested generalization that describes a pattern in nature Hubble Law: v=H 0 d Theories use Laws The Law of String When a knot is pulled, the extended rope that is outside of the cylinder is pulled into the tube, and the initial pulled knot extends by the same length the rope was. Scientific Theory A scientific theory is a general principle supported by a substantial body of evidence offered to provide an explanation of observed facts and as a basis for future discussion or observation The most powerful theories are ones that account for existing data, consistently predict new phenomena that are subsequently observed and are falsifiable and testable Theories are not absolute, and they are constantly being tested A hypothesis that is well established and survives many tests that might have refuted it attains the status of THEORY
