Copyright 2023 Bruce Tesar Ling 441, Fall 2023 Problem Set 1 Answers Page 1 of 1 Problem Set 1 Answers 20 Points Total Problem 1 Part A (3 points) The stimulus is the sound of the robot’s voice saying “Yum Yums”. Part B (3 points) The response is Dora stepping into the hallway and buying a dark chocolate candy bar. Part C (3 points) The reinforcement is the dark chocolate candy bar. Part D (3 points) Dora has an association between the stimulus and the response. The stepping/buying response is under the control of the robot voice stimulus, and is reinforced by the dark chocolate candy bar. Part E (3 points) Conditioning. At multiple times in the past, Dora has stepped into the hall after hearing the robot, and purchased a dark chocolate candy bar. She has received the dark chocolate candy bar, which reinforces her stepping/buying response. These instances strengthen the strength of the association between the stimulus and the response, constituting conditioning. Problem 2 Part A (3 points) The stimulus is the same as before, so the association should apply like always. Thus when Dora hears the robot’s voice, she is predicted to step into the hall and attempt to buy a dark chocolate candy bar. Part B (2 points) Prof. Tesar believes that Dora will not step into the hallway, because of the memo. Even though the memo did not include the robot’s voice, it should be capable of altering Dora’s response to the robot voice stimulus, without the need for repeated conditioning.
