There, she stood in the corner that she could finally call her own.
This was the moment that made Yooree Losordo realize that she had accomplished what many had a difficult time initiating---- a successful business. As the owner of On the Dot Books Bookstore, the shear excitement of bringing a service to the community helps to keep her working tirelessly in her efforts to continue developing all positive ideas into reality.
Migrating from Seoul, South Korea, to the United States at just six years old made Yooree feel eternally grateful to be in a country where she would be given the same opportunities to become a working, successful citizen like everyone else. Since moving to America, her mother worked at the Queens Borough Public Library.

In many occasions, women-owned businesses stay at a small scale due to lack of finance. Unlike some differing opinion, Boston has a lot of resources for women entrepreneurs. Contrary to popular beliefs, Yooree believes that it is very easy to get opportunities as a woman. The question of discrimination between men and women, and people of color in the business field arose. Yooree commented, “I have never been white nor a man, so I would not know about how it feels to be in their position, but women and men of color tend to be socially conscience, such as the Black Lives Matter movement, and their businesses have social ambitions. The challenges do remain to be all the same.” She says that she has never faced any discrimination that she was aware of, but strongly agrees that entrepreneurs were made to keep going and not dwell on situations as such.
In terms of being a business owner, Yooree believes that the pros of owning one’s own business is that it is very rewarding, one can set their own schedule, the job can be positively challenging, it is possible to create an unlimited destiny, and it gives people an opportunity to grow within themselves. The cons, however, are that the work is never done, and solo entrepreneurship simply means that there are never enough people to help with the
| A sole proprietorship is easy to create; there is minimal creation cost and time. The single owner has autonomy in decision making; sole owner makes all decisions related to the business and has complete ownership of business’s finances.
Lesley Gillespie, the cofounder of Australia’s most successful bakery, Baker’s Delight, has shown many, if not all, of the traits required to be a successful entrepreneur, and is now on the BRW Rich Women 2015 list. In an equal partnership with husband Roger, her position as joint chief executive puts her on the list of a minority of business owned by women, especially in the 1980’s when Bakers Delight was opened. Though she has said that she has not faced many barriers to being a woman in business, apart from a few instances, a woman would likely not have made it to be so successful without focus, thinking of those around her, passion, self motivation and without being a hard worker, all of which are traits required to be an entrepreneur.
In the Carbado and Gulati article, A Black woman (single mother) named Mary is secretively discriminated against not only because of the color of her skin or her gender, but how she presents herself in the work force. Mary was up for promotion but was denied and created a case in court with the hopes of finding out why she never got partnership. There were four Black women working with her at the

If you start your own business there are many benefits but if you do not know what you are doing, you will fail. You must have a motif, a passion and be willing to sacrifice in order to do what you have to do. Having a business has many benefits like having the ability to fluctuate your hours, building relationships, sharing your knowledge or products. But managing a business is not easy it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and consistency. A business could make millions one year then be bankrupt the next because the economy is not always the same. You must be able to manage your money well because you must have capital to buy inventory whenever needed, while maintaining a budget to support your family, and to put money away for retirement. Because you could have one really good month but then next month could have no consumers. So your business must be your
SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP: Has only one owner. Easy to start up. Some of the advantages are: owners may do whatever they want to with the business and if they want to go on vacation they can. One of the disadvantages they cannot bring in another person to help run the business. This business form is particularly common.
In the speech “Equal Rights for Women” by Shirley Chisholm, she explains why women need equal rights. She makes several points such as the fact that there are about 3.5 million more women in the US than men yet only 2 percent hold managerial jobs. Shirley also talks about how blacks are discriminated similarly to women. She says that although black discrimination is disappearing, similar discrimination and prejudice against women is still around and is accepted. She further explains that “The happy little homemaker” is the version of women that parts of society see.
Having a sole proprietorship has many advantages and disadvantages for PODS. Some advantages to having a sole proprietorship would be the ease and cost of formation, having more flexibility and control, able to make quick decisions, minimal legal costs, closing business distribution and use of profits (Ferrell, Hirt, and Ferrell,2014) This is a wonderful option for someone who is just starting out and wants an easier way conduct business. Sole proprietorship also can have some disadvantages such as only having access to limited funds, lack of continuity due to investors not wanting to invest their money into something that has little or no history (Ferrell, et al., 2014). Most new business owners are not able to hire employees which have the qualified skills needed to get the company up and going successfully.
In a 2013 incident, she reported that she was not shown or even sold a hand bag in a boutique in Switzerland due to the saleswoman assumption that she couldn’t afford the handbag – an incident that infuriated blacks in America. Following the incident, Winfrey commented, “I could’ve had the big blow up thing and thrown down the black card and all that, but why do that?” Oprah, thus, views racism as a personal mindset, similar to Caribbean Americans, where she is less affected by racism and is able to move beyond that moment. However, this reaction contrasts with the reaction of many black Americans. Were a young black female or male to be followed around in a store by a store clerk, that black person would rail against the store clerk and call them out on their prejudice. I know I have, as a black female who has stopped shopping at stores where this prejudice occurs. Oprah didn’t see the value in doing that. She moved forward and continued on with her life, refusing to let the moment get to her. For many black people, including myself, these personal attacks are more or less an example of the systemic nature of racism. We are troubled by these experiences.
Women are one of the most groups being discriminated against today. They try very hard to fit in and be successful in their careers. Discrimination against women is found in many workplaces. Some managers try to fix this problem, but others just ignore it. Companies that pretend that gender discrimination doesn’t exist are usually the ones that get sued for it more often. Other companies try to avoid law suits by dealing with gender discrimination and resolving conflicts before it gets to the law suits.
As a leading female entrepreneur in Chicago and owner of an Women-owned Business Enterprise (WBE), Borre actively promotes technology and entrepreneurship in her community and she encourages other women to enter the tech field as well. Her expertise
The advantages to the sole proprietorship are single control over the business and its decisions, easy to start up, less regulations and paperwork burden that the other types of business. The disadvantages are unlimited liability for their company debts and actions. The law does not recognize any distinctions between the owner’s business assets and personal assets. Banks are very skeptical about lending to these types business because there is only one person to hold liable for repaying the debt.
Gender and race are often synonymous with one’s place in organizational power structure. Those individuals who occupy the top positions have a tradition in maintaining traditional rules and procedures related to hiring, seniority, and other personnel practices that work to their advantage and exclude others. A good example is that corporate policies and practices can subtly maintain the status quo by keeping men in positions of corporate power. Boards of directors, which are mostly comprised of men, sometimes perpetuate the status quo by selecting CEO’s who look like them. Other gender based barriers include behavioral and communication styles that differ vastly from the company’s norms and women’s lack of opportunity to gain general management and or line
Consequently, this has potential implications for the investment on the next generation; if parents view daughters as less likely to earn market wages or take paid work, they may be less inclined to invest in their education, which is woman’s fastest route out of poverty. Also, in a job market dominated by men who monopolize the most important positions, the male faction generally retains the opportunities for success, for advancement or for higher wages. In fact, a recent class action lawsuit filed on behalf of 1.6 million women employed by Wal-Mart stores alleges the retailer’s sexual discrimination has led to women losing out on pay, promotions and other advances; women are paid less than men in every department of the store. According to the study named in the lawsuit, two-thirds of Wal-Mart’s employees are female and less than one-third of its managers are female Until recently, social development, by design has guaranteed women limited growth in the employment ranks by the standard curriculum path recommended for the female gender; typical high school and junior colleges required home economics and other domestic-related courses to be completed by female students. Thus, the woman high school or junior college graduate enters the world without adequate training to compete in the business world beyond basic trade or “blue collar” worker positions.
In this case study, Liz Ames has come up against an all too common problem in business today: gender bias. Effectively managing racial, ethnic and gender diversity is not just a human resources issue; it is a serious business issue.
