Nonverbal communication is is defined as “messages expressed by non linguistic means”(Adler 188). This includes verbal cues that do not involve words such as: sighs, laughs, throat clearings, and other noises. Nonverbal communication also includes nonlinguistic dimensions of the spoken word such as volume, rate, and pitch. It also includes abstract factors such as physical appearance, the environment, and how far we stand away from each other and the way we use time. Nonverbal is also the factors that we think of, body language, facial expressions, and eye contact. Some studies show that 93 percent of the emotional impact of a message comes from nonverbal cues, while others show that the figure is closer to 65 percent. Nonverbal communication plays an important role in how we make sense of one another’s behavior (Adler 188). There are many influences that contribute to the way we communicate nonverbally. A few of those influences include: gender, culture, and age.
Facial expressions through non-verbal communication are a sufficient way in listening, expressing emotion and giving feedback. Non-verbal communication is a vital element of interpersonal communication as it helps express emotion and personality through the process of exchanging information (Eunson 2012). Non-verbal signals such as facial expressions can be defined as
Non-verbal communication consists mainly of the things people do with their body language. There are times where words are expressed and non-verbal communication could help emphasize the message. A few examples of nonverbal communication are hand gestures eye contact, facial expressions as well as tone and volume. I was given this assignment to observe a situation and take note of the nonverbal communication that occurred. I also had to observe whether the non-verbals were able to execute the message and if the behavior was acceptable.
I believe the nonverbal message in this image is Affect Displays. A woman with an obvious bad tan seems as though she has a negative reaction to the gentleman that’s doing a double take, looking at her. Her facial expression has a look of irritation from the staring
My writing assignment is to explain nonverbal communication “messages expressed by nonlinguistic means”. (Adler et al 431) so that you may understand that verbal communication is just a small part of the communication process and that through nonverbal communication you can communicate without even using words or by the way you say the words. Let me warn you that you need to be very careful when trying to interpret nonverbal communication, because nonverbal communication can be ambiguous. What I mean by that is nonverbal communication can have more than one meaning as you will see later in this writing assignment.
There are many levels and moving parts in communication. We rely on both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication in order to send, receive, translate and respond to each other (Cheesebro, O’Connor, Rios, 2010). The spoken or written word only comprises of about 7% of our communication with each other. The other 93% is made up of voice quality and non-verbal communication (Heathfield, 2011). Non-verbal communication or demonstrative communication comes in many forms. It includes body language, facial expressions, eye contact, posture, touch and tone of language.
When most of us think about communication, many of us immediately imagine ourselves talking to someone or writing them a message. Most of us do not actively think about the equally or more likely, much more important nonverbal cues that are very much a part of how people perceive our chosen messages. The main types of nonverbal communication cues that I focused on while I was observing my subjects were:

Throughout an entire day we use nonverbal messages as eye contact saying hello without speaking. While in class an instructor can look at your body posture and see if you are listening or understanding what is being discussed. We as listeners have to choose to believe in nonverbal message that a person is showing us feelings. We use nonverbal communication in relationships with a touch that can show love or being introduced to another with a hand shake.
Nonverbal communication includes all communication besides the use of words themselves. In correlation with gender it has two functions: It expresses cultural meanings of gender, and men and women use nonverbal communication to act out their genders to others (Wood 2014). While an artifact such as the
Communication is a frequent occurrence, yet it is not a simple ordeal. Communication has layers and density. The two primary forms of interpersonal communication are verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication includes the content of speech, as well as factors such as tone of voice, rhythm of speaking, word choice, and emphasis. Experts and researchers in the field of communication assert that nonverbal communication composes more than half of the communication among people. Nonverbal communication has a variety of factors such as eye contact, gestures, body language, and even the dress of the person speaking/communicating.
The scene I'm going to describe is from my guilty pleasure show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The main character Rebecca has used lots of nonverbal communication throughout the show. In a recent episode, her ex-boyfriend Trent returns and blackmails her into being his girlfriend again. He kept her in her apartment for a few days and then she finally convinces him to go to her office to meet her coworkers. There Rebecca uses nonverbal communication to let her coworker and friend Paula know she is in trouble.
In a romantic relationship, it is easy to have miscommunication between a man and a woman. “Most researchers agree that 70% or more of the meaning of any message is communicated through nonverbal channels like eye contact, facial expressions, posture, hand gestures, etc.” (Stinnett, 2015). Verbal and nonverbal messages are like a relationship, they work well together that way the message is sent and delivered appropriately and that there is no miscommunication. Women have their way of expressing themselves to their boyfriend, fiancé, and or husband and vice versa for men. This paper will focus on the varying behavior of gender in expressing the different type of emotions using nonverbal communication in a romantic relationship. Following
The study of nonverbal communication was engaged by scholars such as A. Pease, E. Hall, R. Berdvistell, G. Wilson, M. L. Knapp.
