Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger. This story follows a young boy, who through hard work, determination, self-reliance, honesty and good character went from a homeless black-boot to a respectable, high paying job. This story is filled with examples of what life was like in New York City, telling the us what he would find and experience in it. In Ragged Dick, This was a time of progress, change and falsehood in American History. This is when people really started to chase the illusive American dream, and Alger is trying to capture this rags-to-riches vision. The fact that the book takes place in New York is not enough to understand the full extent of this book. At this time many Americans were going through one of the hardest times in
Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography and personal memoir, “Born to Run,” covers all of exactly who he is and how he got to be that way. From his family life to the making of his albums, from his mental heath to his concerts, it all coincides with one another, clearly identifying who he is as a person. This book would thrill even the most hardcore Springsteen fanatics and keep them on the edge of their seat. Born to Run adds little that’s new, but its narrative voice proves to be extremely insightful
Since they were so against facing the Gievers or exploring the maze more in depth, it took them 2 years to figure out the code and finally escape. It's never revealed why WICKED put Thomas and Teresa in the maze, but my theory is that the other Gladers were taking too long to escape so they put them in to help them out. Therefore, Thomas' position in the glade was created because of fear, the fear of the Grievers the Gladers had, and WICKED's fear that they'll take too long. Another demonstration of fear playing a big role in the story is Chuck's shocking sacrifice. After the Gladers escape the maze and enter this laboratory, they come across a deranged Gally.
