Graduation has many meanings for it; however one way to look at graduation would be the transition from youth to maturity. Graduation in another point of view could be the transition from one chapter of someone’s life to another. Most people would consider their childhood the best time of their lives. Some could also recall a part of their life that was a new chapter for them, or that it changed their life in one way or another. The journey from youth to maturity however, is ruthless, inconsistent, and can be a good time for some; others, not so much. Poems such as “To an Athlete Dying Young,” or “An Ex-Basketball Player” and award winning movies like “Holes” and “High School Musical: Senior Year” all relate to the celebration called graduation

Some people have asked to read the commencement address I delivered this morning to the 2013 graduates of Butler University. So here it is.

Welcome staff, family, friends, and of course, class of 2018. This is not just a graduation, it is a commencement. That word is important because we almost exclusively think of this as an end, but the word commencement evokes beginnings. My sincere hope is that you will mark this as the beginning of a lifetime of learning and not as the end. You may be thinking, yes this is it, I’ve done all my assignments, read all my textbooks, I’m done. But that’s not the case. We live in a society that values winning trophies and awards over earning them. 4.0’s over truly wrestling with the material you are learning or enjoying yourself while doing it. We want a quick fix, an instantaneous way of being recognized. A way to

Graduation is an exciting time... both an ending and a beginning filled with warm memories of the past, and immense dreams for the future. Should we reminisce on the past four years, or instead focus on the next stage in this journey called life? We’ve been impatiently waiting for this day for many years, and now, we just want to hit pause. We want to slow it down, and enjoy the last fleeting moments before we graduate. Our lives will be forever altered after we toss our caps into the air.

Good evening, parents, staff and graduates, and welcome to Roberta Bondar Public School’s 2016 grade 8's graduating ceremony. I'd like to thank you all for being here on this special and important day. Speaking of special days, can you believe we're finally here? Today is the day all the grade 8’s have been waiting for since the day we got here. Whether that was in grade 6 like me or kindergarten or maybe even this year. Today's the day we can all walk out of here older and smarter than we were since we got here. Today’s Tuesday and on Thursday of this week, we are all going to walk out of here and on different paths.

That’s good. I know about the P.T. because when I was in Postal school they made us do P.T. with the AIT students, talk about getting smoked with the young kids. That’s good to hear that you have the highest average in your class, when I reclassed to 42A I made the list for Honor Grad right before the Unit deployed back in 2014. Imagine that every high school senior in the United States was tested and then upon graduation assigned to a career based off of their score. Wouldn’t that be horrible? The world would be filled with people who hate their jobs. This is just a quick example of how a single test doesn’t define our future or who we are. Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT are extremely useful for college admissions officers but the tests are way too emphasized in the college process; this is why the exam makers should improve the exams so that the emphasis put on these exams matches the results it gives back.

Graduates, until this moment, our lives have been a sequence of carefully organized and orchestrated events, predetermined by the completion of each grade, logically leading to the next. This very moment marks the commencement of a journey over a boundless road on which our transportation is ambition and our fuel is passion. Passion, what, with such great force,

Starting school for me wasn’t easy because I didn’t have a plan. I did what every high school student was urged to do after high school and I enrolled in college to pursue a higher education. Enrolling in college gave me the idea and hope that the college would provide a greater advantage in life and career endeavors. Beginning school as a first generation student was an opportunity for me that wasn’t without its challenges and learning experiences. Lacking knowledge in navigating financial aid or how to enroll in basic courses, I just went for it and started school.

Hello, and welcome to High School, this is where you send your kids every day for us to watch. We can assure you that after they walk through the school doors, they will happily be greeted with a heard of students eager to learn, just a wonderful way to start off the day if you ask me! Not many people know this, but public schools are really scheduled so that they make sure students are the most run down and least focused. We find this helps students with fully unlocking their subconscious mind and learning through it their full potential. It has been shown that students will learn more and retain information when their brains are not functioning, so we make sure our students are up all hours finishing homework so that their brains are tired the next day and can easily retain new information.

English class seemed to be the most dreadful to take within school. Writing essays for most of my grade in a class is not what I was looking forward too. When I entered college I knew that it would be one of many challenging classes I would have to take. Starting from the lowest English class to moving on up, the writing assignments became longer and more thought out. The time came when I got into this class that I knew more work was going to have to be put into essays and thus brought out what I had not seen before in my work progress.
