It is a common idea that traveling gives people a greater insight on the dynamics of the world as they experience different cultures and ways of life. This can be seen in the short story Wedding at the Cross by Ngugi wa Thiong’o where traveling greatly influences the main character Wariuki’s outlook of the world. Wariuki starts off as being a very poor but very happy man until he gets humiliated by his father in law, Douglas Jones, for not being wealthy enough to pay for a wedding at a church or provide for his wife. This ignites a fire in Wariuki to prove his Douglas Jones wrong and he goes to great lengths to accumulate enough wealth to become higher class and not be looked down upon. The great lengths that Wariuki goes through to try and …show more content…
Wariuki was fortunate and escaped the negative aspects of the war and took advantage of the opportunities that came with. He set himself up as a timber merchant and felt he finally was in a place where he could become very wealthy. This shows Wariuki as a changed man because he once would have been with his people who were fighting and being put in concentration camps but instead chose to work for the colonial regime and took advantage of the situation (Thiong’o 104). Wariuki’s choice shows a change in moral conviction that can is linked to acquisition of wealth which was Wariuki’s life motivation. His travels throughout the world made him realize that being the “good guy” would not get him far in becoming wealthy and proving his father in law wrong. As Wariuki realized how the world worked with his many unsuccessful trips in becoming wealthy he realized that the only way he was going to break through the system that made it extremely hard to greatly improve one’s well-being was through hard work and a lucky break. So, because of his experience during his travels Wariuki made the choice to take advantage of the opportunity that presented itself and even though it hurt those around him it was the only chance he had to achieve his dreams. Through his travels Wariuki came up with what he thought was the only way he could make enough money to fulfill him and it although it changed him as a person it ultimately ended up working. However, his father in laws influence cannot be forgotten from the picture, as the embarrassment Douglas Jones put Wariuki through seems to be the biggest contributor towards Wariuki’s life
In her essay, “Seeing”, Annie Dillard describes that someone’s perception of the world are based on preconceived judgements and ideas. Traveling is an example that illustrates that there are many different perceptions of the world, depending on the person. When one travels, their impression will be affected by expectations of the trip. Often, if someone has an image in their head of how traveling will be, they aren’t open-minded to diversity. An individual’s perception of traveling can be affected by what people find enjoyable, their tolerance of creating intercultural relationships, and their appreciation for their own life.
1. The thesis of this essay in the author's words is "Travel is how we put a voice to the Other and step a little beyond our second hand images of the alien." In other words, the author is trying to tell us that travelling is necessary in order for us to not hold prejudices and experience the lifestyle of other cultures.
Next I will talk about the social situations that affect the travel to long haul destinations. The poverty in a lot of long haul destination countries reaches the extreme levels where beggars are around every corner. Tourists have to be really careful with showing what they have and showing their wealth as the beggars end up making them feel
From my travels, I also learned that there can be more than one solution to a problem. Indeed, having a variety of perspectives makes it easier to come up with approaches to different problems. My travel experience has strengthened my interpersonal skills, as well as my integrity and determination.
Those who make a habit out of traveling the world, more often than not, become more of an extrovert than they may have been prior to their many journeys. It is no secret that those who make the choice to travel more often have a bit of extroversion in them, however, even the least social of any group typically find a way out of their shell when traveling. No matter the destination, it is the various interactions with people from foreign backgrounds, beliefs and cultures that present a challenge to the normality that most individuals cling to. These initial interactions create a comfortability, or openness rather, to engage with new people and see humankind through an altered, more optimistic lens than once
In my own life, there are many things I want to do that will allow me to broaden my view of the world. This book for me just reassured me that I should pursue my passions and seek knowledge in every form. Traveling is a passion of mine that I know I want to continuously pursue through my life. I have been traveling up and the west coast and occasionally
Throughout history, the progressions of mankind has given way to a perpetually globalizing world. Globalization, the “process of interaction and integration among peoples of different nations, has strengthened human ties while our race has formed societies in every corner of the globe. As our world becomes more interconnected, the resulting blend of cultures has led numerous societal features to be shared between peoples, blurring cultural division lines. Globalization’s tying binds may frustrate many modern travelers seeking unique and special travel experiences due to the standardization of destinations resulting from increasingly cozy international social relations, but continued and extensive human travel has demonstrated that the essential human urge to move is a product of our search for fulfillment in what is unfamiliar and will not be suppressed by global interconnection.
“The shortest path to oneself leads around the world.” So, wrote German philosopher Count Hermann Keyserling, who believed that travel was the best way to discover who you are.
The first thing Goins talks about is traveling teaches you to live an adventurist life. This is true people can live more freely and explore the world while they are young. Goins said in his article that he hiked a Mayan ruin if someone were to do this when they are older they would have a more difficult time doing this compared to someone who is young. He also said that taking the risk of traveling well you’re young inspires other to step out of their fear and go travel. This is true people see their friends out traveling the world well they go to school or work every day and they wish they could be that person traveling and having fun. Seeing other people travel really inspires other to take that risk and travel the world.
Since the dawn of the human race, men and women have traveled the world for a myriad of reasons. The need for more food, a better living environment, religious or ethnic persecution, or even curiosity have driven humankind to search out new lands and new territories. In the ancient world, people traveled for different reasons including to spread their religion or to escape religious persecution. The desire for wealth and power fueled by curiosity, caused others to pick up their bags and move to new lands. There were certain select people from various people groups intentionally did not or could not travel due to their gender, their socioeconomic status, or even their culture.
“For A More Creative Brain, Travel” by Brent Kane correctly portrays the idea that traveling allows you to be a more creative and opened-minded person. This article shows ample evidence of why travelling
Traveling makes you push your self to be more active, walk around, take a hike to see an incredible view and essentially make your muscles work twice as hard.
Traveling, in general, makes people healthier. Occasional travelers report lower stress levels and lower risks of heart attacks. These benefits even stay awhile after the trip has ended. According to Larry Alton, “traveling has been scientifically proven to lower stress levels.” (NBC News) This is because traveling is like taking a break from one’s hectic life. One gets to think about themselves and relax. People feel less anxious and tend to forget about problems that usually bother them. In a way, they disconnect from their busy lives.
The Wedding by Stanislaw Wyspianski is considered one of the most important pieces of literature of Poland. The play focuses on a wedding of an urban elite groom and his peasant bride. The period of this play is that of the failed uprising of November 1830, and January 1863 in retaliation of the Partitions of Poland. The Chochol is an inanimate objects yet in the play
Travelling is important as it can remove the unintended prejudice that individuals carry out rashly. Sometimes, people unconsciously treat others differently solely based on their own beliefs. Since their judgement is based only on opinion, therefore it may be inaccurate to use when addressing the persons around them. However, exploring the world may lessen your tendency to be prejudice as you will gain detailed insights to the way others think, the way others see, and the way others live. Thus, this will allow you to not make foolhardy assumptions when being in contact with a society or community as you will be more knowledgeable to understand why they are the way they are. Removing prejudice from our lifestyle is very important to us as open-thinkers as we often make many mistakes in the treatment of other human beings. Prejudice is an undesirable trait to possess because
