I currently work for CBRE working on different transitions (projects) remotely. The workgroup is commonly referred to as Vendor Enablement (VE). Working in a virtual group requires individuals to trust each other, commit to work as a team, communicate often and open with each other, work independently, and be accountable for our own actions as well as those of the team. “Employees are usually judged on what they do more than on what they appear to be doing” (Shockley-Zalabak, 2015, p. 205). Most members of the group I work with have never met; we are located between Georgia and Texas. The members of the group include me (Team Leader), Desmond (Information Giver), Melanie (Information Requestor), and Lauren (Follower).

The group is expected to have a minimum of 80% of the targeted suppliers on-boarded by the set transition date. Although, the group is pre-formed to provide the above duties we go through the team life cycle stages with each transition. Every transition is different because client requirements vary. Insurance requirements, client expectations, contracts, and time lines are all items that may differ between clients. The storming process is completed by the transition group which includes the VE leader (me), the sourcing transition leader (initiating role- responsible for contracts) and a representative of the client (summarizer-evaluator). The norming stage is performed by the VE group where the leader explains the challenges of the transition and a plan is devised to overcome those challenges to have a successful transition by clarifying the role and expectations of each VE team member. In the case of Providian Trust, the organization attempts to outsource the implementation of a major software system aimed at updating its internal business processes and outdated information system to be more cost efficient and provide more timely services to its customers. However, there are certain activities and processes that are needed to ensure that the procurement process is effective and the appropriate goods and/or services are acquired. For example, a needs analysis or feasibility study will need to be conducted prior to sending out the request for proposal (RFP). Specifically, for IT projects, such as the software development for Providian, this will pay off despite the chosen vendor as well as help avoid falling in love with a pretty interface and not what’s under the hood. In addition, the focus will be on solving business problems and seeing and understanding vendor capabilities and tool demos in relation to the project goals and objectives for the future. One benefit of a virtual team is that they use technology and this can help increase efficiency and productivity of the members. The virtual teams also assist in the development of intellectual capital. The composition of the virtual groups helps improve quality as well as the outcome. The other benefit is the efficiency of communication. Some of the challenges include the distance between the members. The significant distance may dilute leadership, weaken human relations as well as amplify dysfunction. Virtual teams are hard to manage especially when it comes to goal setting, task distribution, coordination and member motivation. Virtual organizations rely on trust that the other members will fulfill their roles since it is not possible to monitor them closely (Hoppe, 2011). The virtual teams may face some internet challenges such as slow internet or disconnection. This problem can be handled through the use of alternative methods of communication such as mobile phones. While making a virtual team, the team members should address all challenges which may hinder communication by coming up with all possible substitutes of means of communication. Virtual Team on the other hand is a group of people working across time, space, and organizational boundaries which communication links are strengthened by the internet. It should be noted that virtual teams can also mean individuals spread across different cultures and languages. (“Virtual Team - Origin, Definition and its Scope,” 2016). More so, this team of geographically dispersed professionals working together as a unit despite distance are committed to achieving a single objective, holding one another mutually accountable.
I agree with Alana, concerning time, and how it may have an impact on low/high contact group development. In addition, low/high contact culture interaction may have an impact in the participant’s status difference, trust, value, and communication. In the event of considering that the group member’s vital source of communication is via internet, this will have an effect on the time messages are submitted or received. Trust, in the virtual environment, is similar to a statue wearing a blindfold, while hoping that your partners will be reliable and dependable.
