The Oxford Dictionary defines Wisdom as the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment. Looking over the history of the United States, it can be argued that as a nation, the U.S has grown wiser over the years. This due to the various obstacles that they’ve overcome. Many of which were conflicts that arose with other countries and, at one point, within itself. All of the decisions made during these times of tension and overall crisis, even though at the moment very difficult to get through, all in all have been exceedingly beneficial to its progression as a Nation and in total helping citizens better define what it truly means to be American. Although the United States has been around since the late 1700’s, the definition of what it means to be American has transformed dramatically since then. Through each major conflict and detrimental hardship, the definition of what it means to be American has manifested itself into something far greater than it ever has been before, demonstrating the amount of progress that this fine nation has made over the past two hundred years altogether.

Cultures using hyphenated forms of “American,” such as Mexican-American, African-American, Asian-American, Native-American and many more is a step in the right direction for culture acceptance. With this positive move in the world, there could be a change in how cultures view themselves, leading to how others view them. The multicultural society has to take into account for this change because without their acceptance it would just be hate. Bharati Mukherjee in her essay “American Dreamer,” asserts, “WE MUST BE ALERT TO THE DANGERS OF AN ‘US’ vs. ‘THEM’ MENTALITY.” Although Mukherjee has a great point here, I have to disagree. I don’t feel that we have to be aware of the ‘US’ versus ‘THEM’ mentality with the change in cultural acceptance.

Based upon the economy of Great Britain, it is very well developed. It is in the tertiary sector of the economic structure which means that more services are given out than goods, the higher in the structure the more developed a country is. In the United Kingdom, 83.5 percent of everything that is output into the economy are services and only 16.5 percent of the economy is either industry of agriculture which again, proves the fact that the United Kingdom’s economy is a part of the third tertiary. To compare with a well known developed country, the United States, the economy is 79.1 percent services which shows the fact that the economies are not at all far off from each other.

There are those who do not like the idea that they are being better served than others are. It makes them feel guilty and upset; they will feel empathy and sympathy to those who never had the opportunities that they had. The minute one acknowledges that one has privilege, that individual must either act on that knowledge, or burry one’s head in the sand. Both in quality of education and in resources, those that are the most under-served are ethnic and racial minorities living in cities. On the other hand, those that are being best served are Caucasians in suburbs, who are disproportionately given the resources and money that urban schools need. One of the main foundations upon of the Constitution is the innate belief that we are a government run are by the people, yet must simultaneously watch for the corruptions of those same people who stand beside us. It is the reason that the United States has a system of checks and balances, to prevent one branch from becoming too powerful, it is why we have the electoral college, though many argue it’s exclusivity has hardly served its purpose, and it is why we have the 7th Amendment, which guarantees all civil trials (that exceed $20, ironically) to be accompanied by a jury. Though the question of its justification and use is more complex than a complete agreement or disagreement, the amendment overall deserves its place among the others, and then some. It is not insusceptible to corruption, most will admit, but we need this right both for it’s efficiency and for it’s correlation with the very foundational principles that make up our country.

The United States has a dark history of satirizing African Americans in books, television, and film. These stereotypes started with minstrel shows and still run rampant in today’s popular culture. Although numerous Americans find African American generalizations like the Sambo or Black Rambo harmless and entertaining, in reality they are the epitome of mortification and inequality for Black Community.

The government consists of parliament which is broken into two houses, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Great Britain has an unwritten constitution, which is states who has the power in government and can make laws. One of these laws is the rule of law. The rule of law states that no citizens can be punished for any actions not forbidden by law. This law is enforced in Great Britain but there are exceptions. The Queen for example is not totally subjected to the law as well as parliament because they can unmake and amend any law they wish. Great Britain further protects its citizens by having a Humans Right Laws. This was passed in 1998 and ensures that all citizens have the right to a fair trial.

The United States of America is composed of redefining events that shape government and politics today. Historical events consciously created a path to the nation we live in, thus establishing equal rights for liberty. However, these rights were not initially believed to be universal, therefore, the president had to lead the country to equality among its citizens. The five most important forces or events that led to the development of the United States before 1865 began with the election of President Abraham Lincoln in November 1860, who was morally opposed to slavery, thus empowering his leadership against division in America. Subsequently, Lincoln’s election divided the country between free states and slave states who in 1861, formed the Confederate States of America in Montgomery, Alabama, by the convention, resulting in Lincoln’s necessity to call for 75,000 volunteers to fight against the Confederate states. As a result, President Lincoln issues the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, liberating all slaves as January 1, 1863. Followed by the three-day battle in Gettysburg, where 17,000 union soldiers were wounded and killed. Successively, in 1864 Lincoln’s re-election reestablished the union. Finally, in 1865, U.S congress approves the thirteen amendment, where in the same year of Lincoln’s reelection he was fatally shot; nevertheless, the nation unites and the civil war ends after 620,000 American soldiers were lost.
