I am a PGCE maths and numeracy specialist student at Newcastle College. My placement is in the school of civil engineering and construction at Newcastle College, where I am teaching GCSE maths and functional skill level 1 and 2. In this piece of work, I will describe and critically reflects on the responsibilities and boundaries in relation to the teaching role from my point of view, and I will also identify and critically evaluate the use of different assessment methods. The responsibilities and boundaries of teachers are centred within the following themes; Initial assessment, planning and preparing lessons, delivering and managing learning, supporting learning, and assessment. Initial assessment Assessing a student’s competence is one of the most important tasks faced by teachers. Initial assessment is designed to help teachers find out what students know already so as to provide them with the correct support that they will require. It involves carrying out initial assessments, accessing specialist support, identifying literacy and numeracy needs and additional support. Planning and preparing teaching sessions I am responsible for planning and preparing teaching sessions. In doing so, I should be able to identify the aims and objectives, prepare and select resources, select teaching method and activities and devise the scheme of work. To prepare and select resources, I must keep up with the changes in technology. I have noticed that we are not charged with the
Initial assessment is the starting point of a learning journey. The information gathered provides a base on which to plan your learner’s progress. Initial assessment is very important so you find out the learners individual needs in order for you to support them appropriately.
Initial assessment is important in relation to determining the competencies an individual may already have, this will ensure that the individual is being taught at the correct level. It can take the form of questions and answers as part of icebreaker activities or open group discussion of
All learners are entitled to undergo a period of initial assessment. Initial assessment is the process of identifying an individual’s learning and support needs to enable the design of an individual learning plan which will provide the structure for their learning.
Initial and diagnostic assessment can often assist the teacher in deciding on the most appropriate teaching method to use in order to meet the needs of the individual learner. An initial assessment could indicate that a learner requires additional support for a number of reasons.
A professional boundary between teachers and other professional roles, ie social services and admin staff, needs to be in place in any establishment. Without basic set boundaries, individuals may misunderstand or misinterpret a situation.
As a Training Consultant (TC) and teacher my main role and responsibilities are to educate and deliver effective training and impart my skills and knowledge in my specialist area which is Childcare. This is needed to support the learner either directly or indirectly and to maintain an inclusive, fair/just and motivating learning environment. I understand that as a teacher I am primarily responsible for the health and safety also the moral and physical welfare of my students/learners. I am also responsible for teaching students with Special Educational Needs. I provide Training to Learners within their workplace which can be either in a nursery, a school, Residential Care
An initial assessment will happen when you first meet the learner at the beginning of a new learning programme. The role of the initial assessment is to establish what the learner already knows about the chosen subject and where they want to get to with respect to their final goal, it is commonly known as the assessment of learning. The initial assessment is being proactive before the learning process starts
Initial assessment is the process which identifies learners needs and can determine where the learner may progress to. Initial assessment can assist in the development of an individual learning plan, giving the learner the opportunity to:
Initial assessment is the beginning of the learning process and helps the tutor and learner know what, if any, extra skills need to be obtained prior to starting on the learning path.
As new teachers leave the world of the University for the world of teaching, they often do not fully understand what is expected of them. The roles and responsibilities of a teacher can be vague and hard to understand when a new teacher is unwilling to ask questions of a mentor teacher, or the mentor teacher is unwilling to aid the new student. As Cathrine Le Maistre states in her paper, titled “Mentoring Neophyte Teachers: Lessons Learned from Experience” there is a much higher level of attrition after the first year of teaching than in any other year (2000). She believes that new teachers should be taught how to use their own minds, and not simply be given “manila folder of notes” (La Maistre, 2000. p. 84) and be expected to follow
“Part of being a teacher is bringing work home” (Kelly). Teachers are constantly surrounded by assignments, that need to be graded, which means that they are constantly working even when they are not physically inside a classroom setting. Therefore, it is important for a teacher to have a strong worth ethic. When I interviewed the student’s one of the students said that a great teacher needs to be responsible. Responsibility plays a huge role, when it comes to being an efficient teacher. When I asked the student to elaborate on what he meant by responsibility he spoke about how teachers should respond to emails throughout the day. As Mr. Kelly mentioned, part of being a teacher means bringing work home.
Imagine what the world would be like without teachers? Teaching is a very tough job and it is nearly impossible to imagine our world without teachers in it. We are impacted every day by teachers, there wouldn’t be doctors, scientists, lawyers, etc. without them. Everyone has one teacher that they looked up to more than anyone else. There are many different types of teachers and each and every one of them plays a huge role in our lives. For example, history teachers help make sure that our past is not doomed to repeat itself by teaching us of our past mistakes. Every teacher contributes a piece to the puzzle. Teaching is an amazing job, however, there are many difficulties to being a teacher and not many people are willing to fill the shoes of these teachers.
All public school educators are held to very high standards of behavior because they are entrusted with the well-being of our children. The public expects for teachers’ behavior to exemplify ethical and moral integrity. Teachers serve as role models to our children they should be aware of the conduct they display both on and off the job. The conduct displayed can have a great impact on their professional image. When educators make poor judgment this can adversely impact students, damage teachers’ integrity and corrupt public trust in school systems and their profession. With the advances in technology and access to social media, the challenges have increased significantly for all educators. Educators must stay focused and develop a keen sense of awareness to a variety of problems and circumstances that they may encounter in their daily contact with students, families and the community. It is very important that teachers and administrators make moral decisions to ensure that their professional preparation meets the highest possible moral principles of conduct.
This paper will focus upon the roles, responsibilities and boundaries in planning, managing and delivering learning based around the teaching training cycle. This covers the application of learning styles to identify the differences of my learners. The issues of entitlement, equality, diversity and Inclusitivity will be addressed. It will also address the relevant legislation in my area of expertise and the importance of record keeping to maintain quality standards. The outline of scheme of work, lesson planning, methods used and resources available to meet the needs of my learners.
Initial assessment is an assessment that helps to identify and understand the needs of the learners. Assessors get information about the students’ choice in the assessment, and how and when does the assessor send them in the right point of referral to meet the student’s needs. For example, students may need specific assessment requirements, further training or different access/resources in learning environment. This assessment takes place before the programme or a lesson begins.
