In our rapidly changing world, Artificial Intelligence is making great strides in the fields of medicine, space research, and humanoid robotics. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of, one’s ethical and moral values. Many individuals feel it is demeaning to create a robot that behaves like a human. Whereas some are convinced that there will be a need for AI humanoids, others maintain that this tremendous advancement in technology will lead to the destruction of mankind. Although I agree with some of the advances in AI technology up to a point, I cannot accept the overall conclusion that this technology will always have a safe or positive outcome. There seems to be many different meanings as to what is an AI, but according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, one definition is, “The ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings. The term is frequently applied to the project of developing systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or learn from past experience” (www.britannica.com). AI technology is not limited to one particular area, it’s a vast range of technology from autonomous vehicles, early detection of diseases in medicine, bionic prosthetic limbs, and to the more complicated humanoid robots. AI has the potential to change the way we live for better or for worse. “Terminator”, “IRobot”, and “2001: A Space Odyssey” are examples of Hollywood films where artificial intelligence runs amok, resulting in a post-apocalyptic future for humanity. Experts rated “A Space Odyssey” 9 out of 10 on realism because HAL, the supposedly antagonist, never strayed from its programming and killed its crewmates to achieve its goals. HAL was not motivated by survival instinct or emotions but simply instructions from its creator. The film’s message is that human moral is not a requirement for artificial intelligence. As the years go by the perception of AI doesn’t change much until the 1977 Sci-fi film “Star Wars” was released. Suddenly, the robots were the “good guys”. C-3PO is a perfect example of a friendly robot and quickly became recognized as one of the kindest robots in the history of movie robots. While robot weapons allow for countries to extirpate the security threats which produce the daily fear that dictates many lives, the use of these tools has to follow a legal precedent. The field of robotics has changed dramatically during the last 30 years. The first mobile robots with any degree of autonomy did not receive attention until the 1970s-80s. Since then, major strides have been made, including applications of learning, interaction, robot cooperation, and simulated emotions. But the issue on the table right now is this: are robots capable of moral or ethical reasoning? This question is no longer a farfetched science fiction fantasy – the question itself has been put to the United Nations. I am sympathetic to the spirit of the motivation behind such a project – humans should try to develop ethical machines in hopes to eliminate human suffering. Yet as it stands, there are several major problems with this view. Although robotic warfare has the potential to diminish casualties and human suffering in future wars, the possibility of artificial intelligence learning ethical understanding to the standard held in warfare today is near outlandish at best. Automated warfare has many complications that humans would still be held responsible for concerning the morality of war, and there is not an algorithm capable of understanding human compassion. Foresight is critical to both minimize undesirable consequences as well as influence the benefits of technology. The issue must be approached in a critical manner, as to assure a task as large as this is handled properly.
