When you hear the word “sinistra”, what word does it sound close to? It sounds closely to the word “sinister” and with that you think sinistra means dark or evil. However, sinistra’s meaning has no thing to do with darkness or evil; it is Latin for left or left handed. With this misunderstanding of the word sinistra and other reasons, left-handed people faced years of social and religious oppression. Hello, I’m Josh Haxton a lefty and I have always been curious about the history of left handers. Through my research, I was able to end by curiosity. Today I’m going to inform you of the history of left-handedness and famous left-handed people in history.
Left-Handedness is defined as having the left hand more dominant or effective than the right. However the dominant use of the left hand was not acceptable for many centuries. In the article "Right, Left, Right, Wrong!”, Luke Mastin describes that from the 13th century till the 20th century, left-handed faced inhumane treatment. The beginning of this maltreatment started in the 13th century when the Catholic Church rose to power. During this time, books and paintings began to damage left-handed people’s reputation. In the book “The Puzzle of Left-Handedness” Rik Smits states that one of things that tarnished their reputation, was European art depicting the Devil and his accomplices as left-handed. As a result, left handers soon became seen as people in league with the Devil. As centuries passed the tension between right handers and left handers stayed the same until the 15th century and 16th century. During this period, the Inquisition, a period of suppression against those that believed unpopular

African-American people have been treated unequally compared to people of European descent. For example, african-americans could not use certain public things like water fountains; when it comes to restaurants, black people had to go to the back to eat. Another thing, black people had to attend different schools than white people furthermore, the schooling was not as good as the others. The way african-americans were treated was not justified in any way at all. To explain, the african-americans probably felt horrible about the mistreatments they experienced. When they had to go to the backs of restaurants it was very inconvenient and they were basically being shamed and ridiculed all day no matter where they went. Some of them weren’t even
During the 1960’s African Americans were abused, considering they were black consequently, terrible living conditions affected all African Americans, for example Oigbokie was abused in a historically black college in Alabama. Oigbokie Said due to the fact that African Americans wear Kente cloth it doesn't confirm that they happen to be African. African vs. African American is an article written by Tracie Reddick and it’s a descriptive writing. Yeshitela is from St. Petersburg and there are no cultural differences between Africans and African Americans. In 1990 the income of an African who migrated to America was higher than African Americans.
Racial antisemitism was born in the Nineteenth Century when laws were passed in many European countries posing the Jewish people as second-class citizens, not receiving the same rights as others in society. While they had reached a level of religious emancipation in some countries, Judaism had become recognized as an ethnicity as well, and this ethnic difference from the Aryans therefore made them “inferior.” Pogroms began across Eastern Europe in the late 1800’s which resulted in
Anti-Semitism as a term to describe hatred of Jews was not used until the second half of the nineteenth century, but a bias against Jews had existed for thousands of years. This resentment of the Jews as a people can be traced back to theological roots as well as practical concerns in early Europe. The most significant and accepted origin of anti-Judaism is the death of Jesus. Jews were branded as the murderers of Christ and Jesus’ followers developed a deep hatred of them. This undertone to Christianity endured over time and became an inherent facet of the religion. Later, when Jews attempted to assimilate into European societies, they faced strong discrimination and resistance. Other citizens viewed them as economic competition. In addition, negative stereotypes evolved about the Jews in relation to their
Centuries ago, the Catholic Church declared that left-handed people were servants of the devil. The word "left" comes from the Old English word meaning "weak" and "worthless." In the 1600s in Europe, lefties were burned at the stake for alleged witchcraft and sorcery.
In March 11, 1900 in a German town called Konitz the severed body parts of a human were discovered. Almost immediately, the blame fell on the Jewish. As Smith points out, anti-Semitism had been on a steady decline, and the anti-Semitics
Before the Emancipation Proclamation, the blacks were rushed to enlist for the Union during the Civil War but they are not allowed to join the army because of the Federal law dating from 1792 barred Negroes from serving for the US army. Although they already joined the war since the American Revolution and the war of 1812. After the first Emancipation Proclamation was executed, the African-American could serve the Federal Army, the first regiment was the 54th Massachusetts, though there were all black soldiers but there were no black commissioned officers-only whites. In that regiments, the blacks are not paid as equal as the whites, they were only being paid 10$ per month from which 3$ was deducted for clothing while the whites were paid 13$ and no clothing allowance was drawn.
When you look at the history between the United States and the Native Americans, it has
Lately, there have been several stories in the news that highlight the mistreatment of African-Americans in today’s society. These stories are horrifying to read as an American who believes in justice and equality for all, and have caused quite a stir in the black community. After the death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, a cry went out from the people; the slogan #BlackLivesMatter took life and started to spread throughout the United States. The slogan became even more popular with the people after the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. This slogan is used around the United States today as a way to bring light to the long unresolved and underlying issue of racism and oppression of blacks in this country. This transaction
Minorities are an endangered species. Not only are they targeted by the police, but are also subject to ridicule and misrepresentation in the media. Back when racism was above the surface, when raping, killing and lynching of blacks was a Sunday afternoon activity, is where we start to see the systematic oppression of minorities in the media. White males would paint their faces black, and exaggerate facial features such as the lips and nose, and mock the black community. Even in today’s society, we have sports teams called the Chiefs and Indians, which Native Americans have made clear are offensive to their history and culture, yet no changes have been made. Many people turn a blind eye to the fact that minorities are targeted by the media and it is not always obvious. To be able to spot some of the inequality in the media, one has to really be aware, and analyze how different races are being portrayed.
The mentally ill have not been allowed basic human rights in most of history. The methods of treatment in the early ages ranged from drilling their skulls to exorcisms. They were usually left to their family’s care and were hidden, abused, restrained, and even abandoned. They were isolated and treated as if they had done something wrong when nothing was their fault. Even today, the mentally ill are ridiculed and not given proper treatment whether it be in asylums, prison, and even general society. There is no excuse for this mistreatment of the mentally ill, but there might be an explanation.
The two kinds of abuse, physical and mental, can have dramatic affects on every individual. Physical abuse is typically apparent, and easy to recognize. Slavery in America was considered a form of physical abuse and it was easy to see through hangings, lashes, and brutality demonstrated that African Americans were under physical abuse. Mental abuse, however, is often difficult to argue as bruises do not show on one's arm from constant mistreatment through unequal pay, educational inequality, and racism. Black Americans continue to face both kinds of abuse and are subjected to consistent inequality. Because of the tone of one's skin, black Americans receive poor education and a lower chance for success. Although physical abuse toward black Americans
I totaly agree you. As an Asian American, I have to say that is true. No women want to say their family is unhappy. We try to hide and cover it with smile face to the public but close the door we may cry. I was taught that domestic shame should not be made public. We may only show the good things to the public. Therefore, as a professional nurse, first thing to establish rapport with Asian Americans is necessary. otherwise, it would be mission impossible to real find the truth aboout
Nursing is a career that offers many benefits, but with it comes numerous controversies. A major controversy that is evident today is lateral violence in the workplace. Norris (2010) describes lateral violence as, “the act of threatening, humiliating, or actually inflicting physical, mental or emotional harm on a peer or group” (p. 1). This topic has become critical in the nursing field because it impacts a very large demographic. Lateral violence affects nurses, patients, and the healthcare system as a whole and there are many techniques being put in place to try and prevent its existence.
In this short extract, the hatred in the lines radiates off the page. The reader is given a clear picture of how Racial discrimination was so evident in those days. The hostility and hatred between Christians and Jews is very well presented and written. It allows the reader to further understand how life was back then and how it may or may not have changed. The author’s use of language and literary devices was cleverly used to show the reader what he was trying to
