When precious metals and jewels are mined from the earth they are not always in a presentable form. They have to go through a process to make them shine and sparkle. There are students that are not always ready for the world, and they need to go through a process to help make them the best that they can be. In Special Education there is a 10 step process that is put in place to make sure that students that need that extra help can receive it and have the opportunity to become their best self. The process covers from the beginning of the process which includes identifying if a child qualifies for special education or related services to the end of the process which is the student being evaluated. The process will be examined thoroughly throughout this paper using the case study of a student named Bryanna that is in third grade and is at risk in reading and math. The initial step in the special education process is to identify if a child needs special services. Bryanna has been spotted by here teachers as a student that is struggling in math and reading. Her test scores being as low as they have red flagged her for student that might need more help than others. This can be initiated by an administrator, teacher, or a parent that may think that a student needs to evaluate. In any situation a parent will have to give the school a written consent for their child to be evaluated. The school system has 60 days to complete the evaluation of the student. In Bryanna’s situation,
If a student is not successful in Tier 3, he/she will be considered for special education testing. The classroom teacher is responsible for communicating is developed through the School Assessment Team (S.A.T.), which is comprised of the school administrators, the teacher of the student being assessed, reading specialist, interventionist, ESL teacher, special education teacher, speech teacher school, psycologist and social worker. Based on the findings, a home visit with a translator, special education teacher and social worker will perform a home visit. This is in order to determine where the child is developmentally in language and academically. The instructional team will also monitor instruction and provide feedback. Encore time embedded into the resource schedule for students will provide additional support for students as needed. The Response to Intervention (RTI) and the S.A.T. will work with teachers to meet the needs of the learner. School audits and walk -through will be on
The amount of people who live with disabilities is a controversial number. Depending on what law and diagnostic tools used, a person may have a visible disability, or one that may lie beneath the surface of his or her appearance. Some people believe that the term “disability” is merely a label use to hold back, or prescribe helplessness. Meanwhile, individuals who have been properly diagnosed with disabilities struggle to maintain respect and acceptance every day. In plain language, there is a lot of misunderstanding between people with disabilities and those without. It is firstly important to get everyone on the same page regarding the definition of disability.
When Public Law 94-142 was passed in 1975 it had a positive impact on the education for children with disabilities. Millions of children in the United States were supported by the law. These children had previously been excluded entirely from the education system.
The Special Education team for learning disabilities will test the student. These students have shown signs of continuous problems with interventions in place. Psychologist, psychiatrist, and any other testing will be conducted with parental consent have evaluated the student. Parents will be mandated to attend all assessment evaluations and the team shall review the findings for referral back to tier two or upgrade student to tier four for special educational services based on educational or problematic behaviors.
First, Rather than focusing on the child's learning deficiencies, emphasize and reward the child’s strengths and encourage them to find new interest and hobbies. Second it is important to meet with the child's teachers, tutors, and school support personnel to understand performance levels, and attitude toward school. After the student has been evaluated they are now eligible for special education services. Special education services are provided to student to work with a team of professionals, including your child's teacher, to develop an Individualized Education Program. The individualized education program is created to provide a summary of child’s current education and future goals within education. Children with learning disabilities need to know that they are loved and that they are not dumb. They need to know that they are intelligent normal people who just have trouble learning because their mind process words and information differently. Students with learning disabilities are just like every other student they just need more focus on certain learning
EE107’s teachers referred EE107 to the Determination Team. EE107 was retained once in kindergarten and placed in a transition classroom for a portion of her 4th grade year. She currently receives math and reading interventions. However, she is not responding to the interventions based on progress monitoring data. Thus, the Determination Team has requested a comprehensive evaluation of EE107 to assist the team in determining whether or not she would qualify for assistance through the Exceptional Children’s program.
The Education system in America has had a lot of improvement over the years. Given
What decisions need to be made at this step?: Ms. Reynolds has to formal write a letter to the School District, which includes the student’s name, and explain her concern of Matthew’s academic performance. She has to explain how Matthew might have a disability due to this performance in his reading and language development. She has to formally request that the School District to allow the Special Education Department to
1. How do you perceive the field of education changing, especially in the area of serving students with special needs?
After a student is suspected of having a disability, a multi-disciplinary team typically meets to determine whether an evaluation is warranted. If the team members decide the student should be evaluated, the school must obtain informed consent from the student’s parents before any personalized testing occurs. However, if parents refuse consent for the initial evaluation or fail to respond to the request to provide consent, the district may file a formal complaint with the state education agency to resolve the issue and possibly to authorize an evaluation. Evaluations must be completed in a timely manner, usually within sixty days of receiving parental consent.
Special education is student centered where the needs of the student come before the disability of the student. Special education teachers create their classroom and instruction based on who their students are and what services they need in order to be successful in their learning. Merriam-Webster (2015) defines special education as classrooms and instruction designed for students with special needs. Special education is a service provided by public schools to students who require additional support through specialized instruction, class materials, and/or changes in their learning environment in order for them to meet their learning objectives.
There are various methods of assessment used in special education, but before this paper delves into that the definition of assessment must be discussed. An assessment in special education is a process that involves collecting information about a student for the purpose of making decisions (Macy, 2007). When this definition is deconstructed, we have to ask the question, “What is a process?” A process is a series of actions that bring about a result. It is a step-by-step series of actions that bring about a result and in special education, what we find is that assessment is primarily a problem-solving process. There are kids in classrooms, for instance, who are reading very poorly, having difficulty functioning in class, and who are struggling each day. We have to figure out what is going on here, what is actually happening and is there anything we can do to improve their quality of life. Again, the purpose of assessment in special education is primarily a problem-solving process that addresses these issues (Macy, 2007). Special education educators have to collect a lot of information about the student that make it relevant to making classification decisions as well as educational decisions. This is the key piece here. Ultimately in special education, educators have to make numerous decisions, for example, they have to make decisions on whether or not the student is going to meet the eligibility standards for special education, they have to make decisions regarding the
It is not enough to know where people should go; leaders must have the capacity to move them to that place (Blackaby and Blackaby). Although, the principal knows what success usually looks like for students, she is not considering the obstacles to education most of the students face daily. For the most part, these students reside with their grandparents because their parents are addicted to drugs. They suffer from the effects of drug abuse during pregnancy, as well as, the inability to obtain medicines that would help them focus and concentrate in school. The instructor has asked the administrators on several occasions to have the students tested to determine if they should be receiving special education services. Administration has
Introduction: Special education services in Russia have improved enormously since the end of the Soviet Communist Regime. Despite the advances in the special education system, people with disabilities still face discrimination. According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, “Barriers Everywhere,” Russia has approximately 13 million people with disabilities, including 700,000 children and young adults, yet the environment is still not accessible for people with impairments. In the 20th century, during the Soviet Era, disability was invisible to the public and children with impairments were segregated and taken to faraway institutions. Recently, significant improvements have been made to help people with disabilities acquire the same
Special education creates opportunities for students, parents, teachers and related staff and administrators to work together to improve educational results students with disabilities. IEPs and 504s are the plans that help educators to develop education for each student with disabilities. The IEP is an important legal document that handles issues in special education properly. There are so many rules that school personnel must follow. In this assignment, I will identify effective procedures for documentation and remediation of the teacher, her behaviors and the allegations about her regarding a special education student.
