Knowing Greece
Have you wondered where several of the gods came from and what is the slipperiest country? The answer is Ancient Greece and Greece! To name some, Oenomaus had his games there so did Apollo, and King Cecrops had the building called Parthenon in Acropolis. Greece has over 5,000 islands but on the other hand, about 220 of them have humans living on it. Greece is known for it's historical sites, artifacts, sculptures, and being the birthplace of democracy, a system of government by a group of people for a state or country. Greece has a Parliamentary and Hellenic Republic government system. People in Greece usually fill vegetables or grapes with grains, meat, or cheese. Greeks also make stuffed tomatoes, moussaka, stuffed vine leaves, meat balls, stifado stew, kalamaris, lobster, shrimp, sword fish, and their famous salad. Also, they craft combinations of vegetables, grains, legumes, and ample olive oil soaked in juice with drops of water. In addition, meat and fish over charcoal with some garlic, salt and pepper, olive oil, and some lemon. In Greece fruits, nuts, vegetables, oil, legumes, (seeds) grains, dairy, greens, and herbs can be found anywhere. They also make zucchini cheese mixture and pie from kneaded, stretched, oiled, layered dough, but these last for a short time. For Greeks it's their culture to name their child after their grandparents, this means there are an abundance of Socrates and Aphrodite hanging around. Icons are all around Greece and it makes someone respected when they pray so, they get attached to a specific icon. If it is a holiday or an event going on in Greece the churches will be packed because religion is enormous in this country. Greeks made their on holidays on saints that were important to them. When people wonder about Ancient Greece the first thing that comes to their minds is Greek mythology; gods and goddesses that have helped shape many historical events. “In ancient Greece, stories about gods and goddesses and heroes and monsters were an important part of everyday life.” (“Greek Mythology.”) The civilization showed that numerous characters and stories helped shape Greeks. The beliefs the Greeks had with mythologies was they understood the meaning behind all the characters that are known today. However, to the Greeks, they were not just characters, these were their gods and goddesses who gave them meaning and understanding of the world around them. Worshiping the gods and goddesses helped them with their religious rituals and the temperament of the weather. A famous wine-jar that was made during this time period was “Achilles killing the Amazon Queen Penthesilea, 540-530 BCE, black-figured amphora”. (Khan Academy) The civilization that they lived in grew around their worship and achievements.

Greece was a beautiful country of the arts. Ancient Greece’s time was around 2000 to 30 B.C.E. Ancient Greece’s people had to deal with mountainous lands, making it hard to live there. Though these causes were against them, they survived and had beautiful and dramatic plays, arts, and architecture. Greece had many wonderful and terrible leaders, and took over much of the ancient world.. Greece had a very rich religion, counting up thousands of gods. Greece also was known for their arts, from pottery to dramatic plays.
One of the major influences from the Greeks was their advancements in government. Greece started out with polis, their essential governing force. The rules of polis varied for different areas, some places had kings, others had monarchies, but these rules were accepted and followed by the people. Around 700 BCE the oligarchy gets thrown out and is replaced with democracy. In 594 BCE, Solon, a poet, was elected as the first archon who essentially acted as president or prime minister.
Indeed, Athens had a democratic government. Laws were voted on and proposed directly by assembly of all citizens. The leader was chosen by lot, the executive branch was composed of a council of 500 men. Juries varied in size, there were no attorneys, no appeals, and trials were very quick since they only lasted one day. Sparta developed a militaristic society ruled by two kings. There was also a council of elders, and 5 ephors exercising political control.
Greece has contributed to our history in battle and in mythology. They came up with all sorts of tactics and strategies to help them advance in warfare. They had iron weapons, a phalanx and so much more. People always hear stories about Sparta and Athens battling. There are tales of Persia and the Underdogs. We hear of invasions and wars. But most of all, we hear of victories, and celebration. We hear about economies being rebuilt and jobs being restored.

A citizen is born to Greek parents, a metric pays taxes and serves to army but can never become a full citizen. The government power in Greece is called an oligarchy. Ancient Greece created the Olympic games. Greek´s started doing the Olympic games because they knew that the Minoans had only done sports like that but Greekś created the Olympics. The first games started in mid-July 776 B.C. In the games they had to compete naked! The Olympicś were held in Olympia in honor of the Greek god Zeus. Every fourth year after that athletes and spectators gathered from across the Greekś place to preform.

It just so turns out that this trade would become the most valuable waterway in ancient world. Unlike other agriculturally-rich civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia Greece’s geography had rocky valleys with soil that was not conducive to stable crop production. Plato was one of the most famous philosophers of ancient Greece. He encouraged people to reflect and think and search the meaning of life. It reminded me that knowledge is everything; it is the the food of the soul.
