Video Games

Video Games have taken over the world. They have many uses like training pilots and doctors at home, teaching kids and just to have fun. All this started with pong the pixeled tennis game but there is a dark side to video games like addiction and suicide are all influenced by video games.
There was always a debate about if video games are good or not. “Video games turn your brain in to mush,” one side would say and the other would say “At least I have fun and I can play with my friends” No doubt this video games debate will never end. But I am interested in which side is right.
Let’s look at 12 point, six positive, six negative, and see if we can make up our own minds based on some information...

They had brothers and sisters report how often they played video games, how often they played with their siblings, how often they had conflict with their siblings, and how they would rate their sibling relationships. Then the researchers asked the study participants to name the top three games that they liked to play with their siblings.
The results surprised the researchers. Siblings who played violent video games together had less sibling conflict. This goes against most video game research that says violent video games increase aggression. But most of the time, the siblings are defending each other against violent opponents. It’s kind of hard to stay mad at your little brother when you remember that he saved your life in Halo.
Researchers also found that video games increased affection between siblings due to shared experiences. “By immersing themselves in the video game world, siblings can share experiences, play together, and strengthen sibling bonds,” explained researcher Sarah Coyne. The researchers theorize that playing video games together may be a new way to strengthen sibling relationships like never
Playing videogames can be a social activity, gaming consoles have advanced overtime, it now allows us to play videogames online with our friends and meet new people. Videogames are also used by our generation to pass the time, like when a person isn’t busy one weekend so he spends that weekend playing videogames with friends who are also not busy; or if someone is in the waiting room of the doctors office, waiting for the nurse to tell him or her when the doctor is ready to see, they might play a game to pass the time. Videogames also give us things to talk about with one another. Many videogames have unique story plotlines with bizarre worlds that have their own lore; some videogames have scoring systems which creates competitivity. Some videogame even have characters that come with stats. So videogames gives us a lot to discuss about.
While there are claims that video games are not beneficial, it is quite reasonable to assume they are. Video game-based learning has become prominent in the world of technology. Crocco states that popular video games are “problem-solving adventures that foster engagement, inquiry, and critical thinking.” The inquiry and critical thinking mentioned by Crocco, paired with the engagement of the player, allow for increased proficiency in those areas. Additionally, Bowen insists that games, including violent games, allow for an expansion of child’s learning along with health and social skills. For example, video games enhance one’s problem solving skills, reasoning, memory, and perception. Although learning is often associated with pure knowledge, children are able to learn socially as well. Since the world is becoming increasingly technology-based, it is convenient for children to learn through technology.
Over the past few decades, video games have been a source of entertainment around the globe. Many people have argued that video games are harmful to children and young adults, while others have argued otherwise. Research has shown that video games has many benefits. These include cognitive, social, and emotional benefits.
“Firstly, video games can serve as a central activity for interpersonal interaction, providing an activity for friends to participate together (like playing cards or engaging in physical recreation). Secondly, online video gamers can promote interaction with others across the game network and establish new friendships and thirdly, video games and their characters can provide a source of pseudo-social relationships for the game player” (cited in Barenthin and Van Puymbroeck, 2006).
Video games can have positive, therapeutic effects on players of all ages, especially those with mental or emotional problems. Games provide a chance to tune out the stresses of everyday life and decompress. Giving your mind time to rest is critical for emotional and mental well-being. Relaxation reduces the risk of heart problems and stroke, boosts memory, buffers against depression, and helps decision making. It even has physical health benefits, by suppressing
Video games have become a massive icon that has spanned decades, technology and even cultural boundaries. Whether you play on a computer, tablet, phone, or console: at some point in your life, video games have been a part of what you do. Strike up a conversation about games and you can make lasting friendships or bitter enemies. Even if they might not know the specific game, everyone knows what the genre is, and because of this, video games have taken their lasting place in our pop
What is a game? Video games have been accused of being overly violent and harmful to the overall health of children. However, video games have been proven to be beneficial through researched studies. Although many adults oppose video games, they have cognitive, educational, social, and other benefits. To better understand the benefits, the background and history of video games should be understood.
The use of video games has become a norm for many people and families. They may be used to relax after a long day of work, or as a way for the family to all participate in something together. Many people view video games as just another form of entertainment, but could they actually be more?
Are video games harmful? Are they poisoning society and corrupting the minds of the youth? The evidence would certainly make it seem that way, but what are the real effects that video games have on people? Video games have been the subject of controversy ever since their creation. Yes that’s right, ever since the creation of Pong, video games have been a concern. In fact C. Everett Koop stated that “There is nothing constructive in the games. Everything is eliminate, kill, destroy and do it fast” (Marcovitz 12). As video games grow more and more like real life concern grows as well. However, as video games grow, they also grow in providing a safe outlet for negative emotions, teaching player’s life lessons, and any research proving otherwise is too flawed to be reliable, the media also twists the subject of video games to fit their viewpoint instead of reporting what video games actually do.
It shows that playing cooperatively helps increase cohesion and cooperative behavior. Not only does it help cooperation within the video game the people are playing, but it transfers to their outside behavior, even increasing cohesion with those they did not play with in the game. This article was published only two years ago, making the research done still relevant. The main author, Tobias Greitemeyer, has done research before in relation to psychology and video games, making him familiar with the subject that he is researching. This is published by the well-known source of European Journal of Social Psychology, which is well known for its articles on the subjects of psychology, much like this one. This source will be used to show the positive emotional effects, and even possible reversal of aggressive behavior, that video games can provide if they are played within the correct context. It even shows that playing a violent video game in a team context can help with improving the players cooperative
Kutner and Olson also report on interviews with kids. One respondent said that he plays video games because he wants to see something that will hopefully never happen to him—experience it without actually being there (Kutner and Olson, 2008, 116). Some other kids said that they played M-rated games with groups of friends, and further research showed that M-gamers were more likely to play games in social settings or with more friends in the room (Kutner and Olson, 2008, 130). Other research shows that video games are a good tool for bringing people together—especially new kids, shy kids, or mentally disabled kids (Kutner and Olson, 2008, 132-134). This book does a good job of describing the effects of video games on lots of different kinds of kids—from different regions, different races, depressed kids, both genders, and mentally disabled kids (Kutner and Olson, 2008, 134).
It seems like everything coming out about video games is bad. A student tried to kill his fellow classmates, and he was an avid Call of Duty player. A study has been released that proves that playing video games will turn you into a criminal. The many benefits of games and gaming, such as their possible applications to education and their ability to tell more complex stories than other forms of media, are almost universally ignored. I know better, though. Between the lifetime I’ve spent playing and loving video games, and the articles I’ve found, I can tell you that video games do not cause violent behavior or thoughts.
Video games have been argued about for decades. Some people have argued that video games are linked to violence. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
Video games get kids to explore and widen their imagination. Some are educated. It turns out that playing
Secondly, video games have been known to build social skills among many who play them. It is widely known that video games have changed drastically. Now people are able to play and communicate with each other from all different parts of the world. Most games nowadays are virtually online game-play only, which means, that the players are all playing together on one server and they do not have the choice to play the game by themselves. This makes it easier to see why video games increase social skills among the nation's youth. “Playing prosocial video games increased prosocial behaviors: children who frequently played
