The Impact of Social Media on American Elections and the importance of 21st century media outlets
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media websites have affected American elections in many forms. Candidates are now turning their attention to the people on social networks Murse (2015). They 're trying to draw more people like Millennials because they use more technology. These applicants are trying to step up and make a huge difference from the election of 2008. While in the running, the usage of social media is being used to announce what he or she is doing for the presidential campaign. For this reason, candidates, controversy, public opinion, social media and its 21st century media outlets have become the center of the 2016 election (CIO, 2015). The US presidential election will be on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, and a new president and vice president will be elected through the electoral college (Wikipedia, United States presidential election, 2015). The popular runners are Hillary Clinton, who is a democrat and Donald Trump, who is a republican. Other popular rising candidates are Ben Carson and Bernie Sanders and more beyond them (The New York Times, 2015). Since they’re in a fight to become president, there has become a controversy between the candidates. Political figure using social media did not start to become more common until after the 2008 election because Twitter and Facebook were just recently created, but by looking at data from the past two elections it shows that the news presidential candidates put on their social media can correlate with how people will decide to vote. Social media is important to presidential election because it keeps people up-to-date, makes some candidates more popular, and has influenced past elections.
If I could get deep about anything, I would want to write about the influence that social media has on the 2016 presidential election. I am very interested in the media and sociology, and am fascinated by the role that the media is playing in this election. Specifically, social media has been shown to improve voting patterns because the younger generation can see and read about the election through social media. For instance, the subject matter first appeared in the 2008 elections as Barack Obama was the first candidate to use social media to his advantage, with this strategy the candidate was able to gain more voters. In Ancient Greece, for example, male citizens often met at the local town square to debate issues forming the word for politics which is running governmental or state affairs, but also applies to organizations. Politics are social relations between people for Aristotle, politics is not only governing, but the science behind it, the motivations, and the manner in which two or more individuals not only converse, but interact (Miller). If we think logically, then we can understand how a political effort rulers and followers, would engender others to try to influence outcomes that would be most beneficial: the military has a view, certain citizens might be builders and want projects, others might want trade agreements, still others might vie to their products.
Social media has grown at phenomenal rates over the past decade, with its rise being easily visible in several fields such as publishing, business, and activism, among others. The rise of its use in the field of politics is well known by those who are on and off social media, as a result of increasing number of politicians using this global platform to their maximum advantage.
