The Four Big Ideas Of Biology

Decent Essays

In biology, there are four big main ideas that are discussed in the subject matter. Evolution, free energy, information, and systems are the main topics taught in biology. Evolution is the adaptation of all living things that all point to the same ancestor. Many things that affect evolution such as small sample size, non-random mating, mutation, immigration or emigration, and natural selection. A species niche is one of concepts in biology that can easily explain evolution. In a habitat, no two species can occupy the same niche at the same time. Because of this principle, different species would often compete for space in order to complete their niche. This competition would often result in organism dying out of many species are using the same type of resources for their niche. When the species die out, evolution kicks in and the other species evolve and improve their genetic code in order to find a way to fill the missing niche. …show more content…

Free energy is constantly flowing through the sun, earth, organisms, and many other systems in the world. Energy is never created nor destroyed, but instead converted. This is easily explained using food chains in ecosystems. Energy flows in one direction, from the sun giving off light energy to plants to animals eating the plants to other animals eating other animals. Energy in ecosystems is generally converted from the consumption of other living things or the conversion of photosynthesis and respiration. The third big main idea of biology is information. Information in biology is information that flows from organism to organism and from generation to generation. Information that is carried over from generation to generation can be known as DNA. When species reproduce, they form a completely new blueprint of DNA that makes one unique specimen. That DNA makes up the appearance, chemical makeup, and the whole setup for that specimen for their entire
