The sense of belonging humans naturally seek in life reflects the feeling of security and being accepted. They struggle with their identity as they make the choice whether to reject the individuality and belong to a community or group. When individuals seek to belong and rigidly follow society’s norms and practices, they must adhere to the strict rules of their society. In doing do, the desire to belong comes into conflict with the need to be an individual. These ideas are powerfully evident in Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible”, “Catcher in the Rye” by J.D Salinger and the Gurinder Chadha film “Bend it like Beckham.” In each of these texts, most desire to belong but need to restore the balance between the need to belong and the …show more content…
Their actions break the cohesion in Salem’s tight knit community. Reverend Hale sees this and warns the officials that they are courting rebellion. As a result of the trials, “cows are wandering loose, crops are rotting in the fields, and orphans are wandering without supervision”. Many homes have fallen into neglect because their owners were in jail or had to attend the proceedings. Everyone lives in fear of being accused of witchcraft.
One character in particular, represents Miller’s view of individuality and is seen as a hero figure because he chooses to defend his individuality. This play shows one man, John Proctor, in his struggle to keep his pride and name from being destroyed with lies, deceit and accusations of consorting with the devil. Proctor tries to expose Abigail and the girl’s deceit but he is punished for it because children were thought of as the voice of god and they were innocent. When the trial was brought in front of the court officials, Deputy Governor Danforth feared that he will lose power therefore weakens the testimony from the girls which broke the power of theocracy in Massachusetts.
The most important scene in the play was act two, scene three, where John Proctor is able to talk with his wife, Elizabeth, one last time. He is accused of practicing witchcraft and at first he decides
There was a lot of hatred that was dispersed across the town. First, Elizabeth Proctor was enraged with Abigail Williams because Elizabeth assumed that Abigail was messing around with her husband. Secondly, John proctor was triggered at Abigail for not letting the past go. John was trying to focus on his wife but Abigail was beginning to take him back. There was a bunch angry and caos.
Conformity is a belief that has conflicted people since the beginning of time. Conformity is the inner feeling that will make you second guess everything you do: should I go to my friends party or should I resist temptation and stay home and study, should I change my beliefs or stand alone in the crowd. Conformity is all around you and it is up to you to make the right choices. In Arthur Miller’s 1953 drama, The Crucible, Miller uses conformity by forcing the people of Salem to choose between being an outcast or being accepted but forced to live a life not true to themselves. Conformity plays a key role in the play because it shows the reader that everyone is hiding something and it gives a deeper meaning to some of the characters
To belong is to be, or have the feeling of being accepted or included by a certain group, person, place or community. While initially an individual may belong to a community or group, speaking their opinion can seclude them, and cause them to become an outsider. Belonging to a community or group can be very beneficial, and not belonging can cause an individual to face consequences. Hysteria and fear can be caused throughout a community by outsiders who don’t belong. We are able to view these experiences of belonging and not belonging through the use of characters and events throughout a variety of texts. Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” and Armin Geder’s picture book “The Island” display how an individual can belong and not belong at
All individuals unmistakably experience a sense of belonging in a multifaceted and convoluted process. Arthur Miller's play “The Crucible” and George Clooney's film “Good Night and Good Luck” are both texts where acceptance into society is explored in characters through various and complex measures. While the play and film both illustrate the complexities of assimilation into society to an individual's identity the Crucible further presents this as an ironic situation as people are pressured into conforming to societal desires, where choosing to detach from community values leads to a detrimental fate.
John proctor was a successful farmer who lived outside of town, Married to his wife Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor was called over to the home of reverend parris to help determine if Abigail ,who is the niece of reverend parris, Is In fact a witch. John proctor then realizes that the rumors are true of the witchcraft talk that his has heard around town. John proctor knows the truth about Abigail but does not tell. Why? John Proctor committed MAL behavior with Abigail, He had an affair with a 17 year old girl while married to his wife Elizabeth. He knows that if he tells the truth about Abigail being a witch that the truth will come out about him and his affair, so he tells lies to keep
The witch trials disrupted Salem’s lifestyle and way of living. Those who ordered the punishment, such as the judges and jurors, apologized to the people of the town for what they had done. The guilt of the executions resonated throughout the town, and left a permanent reminder for generations to come. The Salem Witch Trials was an issue due to the teenagers of the town; however, the witch trials are more of a moral lesson to the future. These trials teach present generations, and future ones to question the outcomes of the choices made. In addition, it illustrates the value of having strong principles in the government, and the consequence of enforcing them
The concept of belonging is essential. To belong is to form a connection which will allow a sense of identity, without this we lose our humanity; however, conformity is in a sense a facade of belonging, as it restrains our freedom and forces us to only mimic. My studied texts show how society demands us to conform, yet conformity prevents a sense of true identity being ever created.
A sense of belonging can be created through the enrichment of a group or an individual by challenging their morals and authority. Belonging is an inevitable human condition which empowers an individual for the better or even for the worse. It can be seen as one of the most significant challenges through out ones journey. The effects are substantial and belonging comes at a considerable price. “The Crucible” composed by Arthur Miller, represents and conveys the desires and inabilities to belong to a community, to a group, to ones self and to another.
Elizabeth Proctor plays a big part in this play, she says little, but yet has some very big actions. She is an innocent girl basically just trying to make friends, but ends up getting caught with the wrong group of people. Elizabeth was an honest girl that would never lie, or treat anyone wrongly. We get to see what part she plays in the story mainly in the second act. There is an insight into how she and proctor acts together in this act, and we see lots of tension. Elizabeth tries her best to please proctor, but proctor always seems hesitant to say or do things. After the almost awkward first part, we see that Elizabeth was convicted of witchcraft by the court. Giles was first introduced and he was
“ The battleline between good and evil runs through the heart of everyone.” In the play “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, the town of Salem is going insane, people are talking witchcraft, accusing the innocent, getting revenge on their enemies, and destroying one another both physically and emotionally. One man, John Proctor never thought one sin of lechery could end up destroying his family and costing his life. His wife, Elizabeth Proctor would have never guessed that by staying with him she would have someone out to ruin her, or that she’d be in court lying and finalizing her and her husband’s death. All because of one woman who cannot stand the thought of Mr. Proctor with someone else, who would stop at nothing to see Elizabeth’s body hanging from the rope. Abigail Williams has one motive, and it is to win. It is truly insane to believe that one evil person can impact a whole town full. In the play “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, the battle is not between witches and God, but is between the faces of good and evil.
We desire to be accepted by all and we strive to do our part to build up the community. Unfortunately, we sometimes struggle to find a balance between our own identity and the community’s collective identity. We find ourselves in a situation where we feel we don't belong and we go against what the rest of community thinks like in novel, The Crucible. The novel describes a tight knit community where everyone believes in God and follows the church. The church is the center of the community and anyone who dares to defy the church is alienated.

One of the many works written and driven by Puritan influence, The Crucible by Arthur Miller has continued to influence life and thinkings. Its story tracing the 1692 Salem Witch Trials has been widely read, received and understood, along with influencing the reader and their ideals. The play has manifested into more than words on a page and has become of the greatest influences, even sixty years after its publication. Though its story has not changed and is merely a retelling of the original itself, its themes have greatly impacted its universal and enduring state.
The second act of the play continues with the rising action. At this point several months have passed since the first act and the trials have begun. Many people have been accused of witchcraft and jailed waiting for the official court trials. This act introduces detrimental details of the main protagonist John Proctor. John had previously committed adultery against his wife Elizabeth and was still not completely forgiven by his wife “It is winter in here yet.” This tension ties in with the main antagonist and the development of the story in that Abigail was the one John had committed the crime with. At this point Abigail is a major influence in the trials, her word dictates who is accused and who is free “Abigail brings the other girls
Belonging has many aspects several of which can be seen in the following texts. The texts “The Crucible” (“TC”) by Arthur Miller, “Rockstar” by Nickelback and “The Pursuit of Happyness” is a movie starring Will Smith display several different aspects of belonging. The concept explored by Arthur Miller in “TC” is the conflict between different groups and the ramifications of belonging to a group. Meanwhile in “Rockstar” the composer explores the concept that people will wish to belong to various groups and what extremes they are willing to go to in order to belong. On a similar note, “The Pursuit of Happyness” explores how people are willing to change when they realize they don’t belong.
