Cellphones are most common in society. The ease of access allows us to have the world at our fingertips 24 hours a day and we never have to unplug. We can surf the web, book a flight, check the weather, and message a friend 1000 miles away without leaving our bed. Texting has fast become the preferred form of communication for young adults; however, students need to be dissuaded from texting during class because of the result in loss of valuable class time, lack of effective communication skills, and consistent use of improper English leading to a negative impact on students’ learning. Lack of comprehension and poor course work will result in a lower grade average. Students may become frustrated and give up easily. Using texting as a quicker and more efficient form of communication takes the emotional connection out of the equation. It allows us to not be physically near the recipient or to take responsibility for miscommunications that lead to hurt feelings. While texting, students do not need to make eye contact with their recipient or learn to read their body language. In addition, there is no need to learn the art of persuasive argument or exchanging and building on ideas. This is not only harming students in the classroom, but can have negative effects when entering the workforce. After leaving college, students hope to land a job in their field of expertise. In the workforce, teams are a diverse collection of persons – all ages and different cultures. Texting may be acceptable in some situations, but there is still a great need for face to face interactions. We learn how to become more comfortable meeting new people and interviewing for jobs. There is nothing wrong the light banter between friends that texting can provide, but the conversation is not necessarily deep. Texting allows us to stay in touch with others in a most efficient way. Cell phones bring people together. “The idea behind Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram is to make us feel connected all the time” (Document 1). Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram can help us keep in touch with our friends (Document 1). Facebook connects more of us to more of our friends and family in more places than we have ever been connected before. (Document 1). Along with this I can say that cell phones are a useful tool.
Authors such as David Crystal along with language teachers like Shirley Holm supply Cullington with valuable experiences and opinions on why texting benefits young adults. Cullington picked up that texting allows students to have a “comfortable form of communication” (365) which aids them in their growth in the English subject. After the author gathered a great number of sources and opinions from either side, she then decided to conduct her own experiment to which she got her own results.
In the article, “OMG! Texting in Class = U Fail :( Empirical Evidence That Text Messaging During Class Disrupts Comprehension”, Amanda C. Gingerich and Tara T. Lineweaver use two experiments to prove that texting during class hinders overall comprehension and confidence over the material. In the article, published by Society for the Teaching of Psychology, Gingerich and Lineweaver imply that their hypothesis is for texting in class to lower comprehension of the lecture material.

Katie Hafner’s article, “Texting May Be Taking a Toll,” displays that the rising number of texts sent by adolescents day in and day out is starting to take a big toll on them, their lifestyle, and the people around them. To start off, in the first part of the article Hafner expresses that the point of the first section is that with a growing number of young people utilizing texting and using it nonstop texting is causing serious issues such as anxiety, failing grades, distraction in school, sleep issues and many others. The author exclaims in the section that, “The phenomenon is beginning to worry physicians and psychologists, who say it is leading to anxiety distraction in school, falling grades, repetitive stress injury and sleep deprivation.”
Nearly everyone is using cell phones in their day routine lives. Cell phones have now become less of a novelty and more of a communication tool providing many utilities all in one package, from camera, video games, internet and apps; they combine business and personal convenience.
Everyone wants to stay connected in each others lives by never missing a beat. More like never missing a text message in this day and age. Life is constantly finding its way to become full of responsibilities with little time to take a break as it is. Texting my family and friends is easier to respond to when I 'm taking care of my daughter and studying for school. Even a phone call seems better so I can multitask, cleaning the house or driving while talking on the phone. Communication is an essential key and important human need. By using technology, there is a deeper connection to communicating than some acknowledge.
Teenagers must consider the importance of being concentrated when studying. Otherwise, we won’t be able to learn in a good way. Things are done in a better way if we do them each at a time. Most of the effects of cellphone messaging on teenagers may be negative due to the fact that they’re used just to chat and gossip and not for important stuff, as used by adults. When a teacher is giving a new class, we may be distracted by a text massage. If we don’t pay attention, more probably, we’ll get a low grade on the next quiz. But that does not only represents a bad grade, but an emptiness in the student’s memory because he might have lost or misunderstood a concept that may be important to comprehend further theories or themes. One such example of this is emergency text messages that can be provided to individuals for natural disasters. Should a natural disaster be about to affect an area such as a tornado, sever storm, flood, etc., people that live in that area can have emergency texts sent to their phones to warn them about the impending danger. This can literally save the lives of those who would have been otherwise caught unaware of the potential danger that they were in. Additionally, text messaging allows for people to maintain personal relationships with those that they do not have the ability to see on a regular basis. Although it is faster and easier, it can cause confusion or take longer because of further explanation. When reading a message, you have to interpret the emotion and tone of voice used.
