Terrorism is an international and domestic problem in today’s society. Many countries are affected by terrorism directly and sometimes indirectly. A substantial amount of nations question terrorism, however there are some nations that tolerate it and or encourage the active terrorists and extremist’s groups. There is no particular term that would describe terrorism, however it is often identified as the use of violence and fear in the hunt for political and often sometimes religious objectives. The most common objective for terrorists is to have their views heard and acknowledged. One thing that we all can agree on is that terrorism is mala in se. According to the U.S. Department, terrorism must contain four basic components. One, there must be a threat of violence and or an act of violence, there must be a political objective, violence and a threat of violence must be a direct attack on civilians which would make civilians the primary target and lastly, it has to be perpetrated by supporting a nation and or nations of terrorism. (U.S. Department, n.d.)
Throughout the year’s thousands of individuals have lost their lives due to terrorist attacks. Many foreign countries have witnessed firsthand the evil that terrorism can bring on a daily basis. Truth is, although we as Americans have not witnessed much of it up until recent years, terrorism has been around for many decades now. There are several foreign terrorist organizations out there that are constantly terrorizing
National terrorism has been the focus of attention since September 11. But now domestic terrorism is becoming increasingly common among hate groups across the nation. Domestic terrorism can be defined as visible crime, or “street crime.” These acts would consist of violent crimes, (acts against people in which injury or death results) property crimes (acts that threaten property held by individuals or the state) and public order crimes. (acts that threaten the general well-being of society and challenger accepted moral principles) It can also however be described as political crime, (criminal acts by or against the government for ideological purposes) which would include the 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing.
What seperates domestic terrorism from mass killings? The United States have a long history of terrorism, mass terrorism and mass killings. Most of these happened in the open public and targeted a number of population to execute. Among these incidents are the bombing of twin towers in 9/11. The Oklahoma City Bombing, The Wisconsin Sikh Killings, the shooting of Congresswoman Giffors and others in Arizona, the Virginia Tech shootings, the cinema shooting during the filimng of Batman and recently the mass shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. What drives the motivation to do such crime? Is It a mass spree killings or an act of domestic terrorism? In this essay we are going to analyze the whether it is a mass spree killing or domestic terrorism.
Terrorism is the greatest threat to humanity. Terrorism is political violence in an asymmetrical conflict designed to raise fear and psychological fear through violent victimization and the destruction of non-combatant objectives. These actions are intended to send a message from an illegal organization. The purpose of terrorism is to exploit the media to maximize possible publicity as an amplifier of amplification power in order to influence the target audience in order to achieve the desired short and /or medium-term or long-term goals. They do not know friends and do not know the rules. The problem of terrorism is closely linked to the main areas of life in the
Terrorism is a constant issue all over the globe. There is no country free of it’s influence. Terrorist often use threats to scare the public, get publicity for their causes, and show people that no one can stop terrorism… not even the government. By definition, terrorism is, “the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion” (Merriam-Webster). The act of terrorism is stupid and unnecessary, but it is extremely common in today’s world so it is important to be educated and understand it.
Radicalization is a process of socialization to extremism. Radicalization processes is what lead to acts of terrorism. It thrives in an enabling environment with a sediments of injustice, exclusion and humiliation among the terrorists groups. Triggering factors varying in accordance to individual experience and personal pathways to radicalization, it is due to global, sociological and political drivers such as extreme marginalization, general decline or globalization. Hence, to analyze the drivers of radicalization, we need to understand the collective grievances behind radicalism by making comparisons of primary causes of radicalization which will ultimately lead to terrorism in different terrorists groups like ISIS and LTTE, will allow us to decide if whether terrorism is primarily due to globalization.
Terrorism is a controversial issue in the present-day society. Based on the perspective of the International community, there is no universally accepted, and legally binding criminal law defining terrorism (Carr, March 2007).The dividing line between terrorism per se and other grievance crimes has become less distinct. (Veness, Volune 24, 2001). In the end, its impact and consequences are what matters to the victim of this horrendous crime rather than the motivation. Bruce Hoffman sums it up: “Terrorism has become accessible to anyone with a grievance, an agenda, a purpose or any idiosyncratic combination of the above” (Hoffman, June 2006). Despite the lack of agreement in the definition of terrorism, it is widely agreed that “terrorists are neither hopelessly irrational nor insane” (Al Raffie, 2016)
For some years now, the United States has been involved in foreign countries but has been limited. Their presence has been widely known and discouraged. For the Islamic states that had been getting drone strikes has been present for years but for how long? The first official drone strike was 9 months after 9/11, it occured on the Taliban Supreme Commander Mullah Mohammed Omar. It was initially a CIA secret weapon. The CIA had kept the project secret for as long as they could, but U.S. Air force general William Begert. For years drone strikes in the Islamic states have been called a problem and have been addressed multiple countries. Many call them a problem while I say they are not.
The first time I became aware of the existence of terrorism was when I was only six years old living in a small European country known as Slovakia. I remember watching the news and seeing the twin towers tumble towards the ground on September 11th 2001. I didn’t fully understand what was going on at the moment, but all I knew was that the people who crashed the planes were the bad guys who had no sympathy; at least that is what I was told. No one was going to explain to me who they were, why they committed such a crime, and the impact they caused on others. Five years later, I was living in the country where this horrifying event happened, the United States. Every time I saw a woman with a hijab, I would directly connect it with terrorism and attacks of 9/11 simply because she was a Muslim wearing her head covering. Over the years, I realized that I was wrong for being judgmental and I became interested in the other side of the story. The other side of the story being Muslim men and women who get judged frequently because of their religion, appearance, and attire. At the beginning of my freshman year as a college student at Montclair State University, a few days into the fall semester, one of my friends brought a stranger to join us for dinner. She was tiny and Muslim wearing her head covering. We somehow came across talking about our birthdays and when I asked her when her birthday was, she simply replied with “I don’t like my birthday”. Feeling very confused, I forced her
The threats of terrorism are growing globally and it is crucial in understanding the history of how terror is obtained to better prepare ourselves and possibly predict future threats. The behavioral pattern of the extremist can be a combination of qualities, acts, or beliefs. It is believed that all terrorist events have political objectives behind them, even though these extremist use religious symbolism to seek a wider audience and resort to violent acts to prove their point. The terrorist’s events leading up to September 11, 2001 can be analyzed for the purpose of uncovering such a pattern to shed light on the possibility of preventing another horrific terrorist attack in the future.
Several books have wasted ink and money in attempting to define terrorism, what it is and why it happens. Terrorism has been present in our world since the earliest times of history and it can definitely not be seen as a novel occurrence. Usually when one tries to explain terrorism, the definition that emerges is ‘a holy duty’ and which has both a scheme as well as a strategy and it is seen as a justified reaction to maltreatment and unnecessary aversion. There are common patterns that are seen amongst terrorist activities and they all adapt to different forms such as kidnappings, threats, bombings, assassinations and airplane hijackings. At the end of the day, however, it all depends on whose point of view is being taken into consideration during this explanation. Terrorist organizations are usually considered to be small and are known to possess a secretive nature. This secretive nature tends to serve as an advantage to them when they attack since they do not provide their opponents with any clear organization to defend themselves or avert the attack. However, in a few cases, terrorism was used to maintain a war without the opponent ever recognizing the type of threat it poses to the country, thereby making terrorism a criminal activity.
Many of us will embrace our loved ones before leaving our homes to start a hectic workday. As we hug our children and kiss our spouses goodbye, the thought of losing them, or our lives to acts of terrorism, is typically not one to cross our minds. On September 11, 2001, this mere thought became the reality for many families. The eleventh of September will forever be remembered as the date a terrorist organization, known as al-Qaeda, attacked the United States killing thousands of innocent people. The al-Qaeda organization have exposed vulnerabilities in the United States’ homeland security. Many have questioned how could this happen to a country known to be the most powerful nation in the world and what steps are being taken to prevent these acts from occurring in the future? Today, terrorism is a forefront global issue bringing nations together to develop ways to improve national security for all.
Terrorism iscertainly not innovative and despite the fact it has been documented throughout history, it is moderately difficult to define what terrorism is. When discussing terrorism, it is publicly implied as either utilizing or threatingthe brutality in order to supplement a political cause, which can be confusing as there isn’t a universally approved definition towards terrorism. For instance, the Global Terrorism Index hasanalysed that 64,000 people were killed by specific enactments of terrorism throughout 2002 and 2011. This is an interpretation of how terrorism has become one of the exceedingly political problems throughout the previous half century. There are a variety of law enforcement, researchers and policy makers who have so far been unsuccessful to institute of defining terrorism this is why I will examine the difficulties that come towards defining terrorism.
The authors are researchers at Rand Corporation, tasked with providing a detailed report on state and local intelligence regarding the war on terrorism. Their purpose is to provide succinct analysis on the current standards of local and state authorities in countering terrorism. The report argues that there are few detailed documents on state and local law enforcement agency (LEA) counterterrorism activities. This report fills such a gap in the field of research. The authors argue that federal level intelligence systems remain disorganized and contend that state and local law enforcement intelligence gathering is crucial in combating terrorism. The report details a survey on LEA preparedness activities on terrorism, authorizations on
In recent years, terrorism has been on the rise. The most famous attack in recent years was that of the destruction of the twin towers in 2001. It caused a massive public outcry at the atrocity of the actions. What most people don't realize, however is that the people who make these attacks, called terrorists, have a goal in mind. People also don't realize that there are many types of terrorism, and are not just limited to the attacker flying planes into famous buildings. The types of terrorism are quite varied, the reasons for each just as much, and the public reaction is never the same for any of them.
It is in human nature to harness aggression towards one another for the cause of strong sentiments of religion and passion. Most people from differing cultures have large disregard and disagreement for another person’s cultural practices, and of course this is no different with Terrorism. Although terrorism has dated back to the 1920’s as far as United States history goes, the 21st century has brought on a new age of terrorism comparable to the Red Scare of the 1950’s. The frequency of terroristic threats and attacks in the 21st century outnumber the terroristic threats and attacks of the eighty years prior to the beginning of the 21st century, exhibiting the unfortunate fact that terrorism is a trending crime. Essentially, Terrorism has
