Terrorism and the acts of terrorists are recognized by few as a new phenomenon, but known by many to be an old phenomenon. Terrorism has existed for decades and continues to thrive today. There are many definitions that were created to define terrorism and a terrorist act; however, the definitions are not one in the same. Essentially the definitions vary, and that depends on the person or organization providing the definition. The one often used or recognized is “terrorism is the use or threat of violence to achieve political objectives” (Gaines and Miller, 2014). This is the type of terrorism that the United States frequently experiences. Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, or the Islamic State utilizes terrorist acts to punish the United States and to achieve their own personal objectives. Terrorist attacks have exacerbated tremendously over the past few years. This is largely due to the fact that terrorist groups are now more active in more countries than 9/11 (Bullock et al., 2013). Due to the growth of terrorist organizations and attacks, the United States is faced with new challenges. The challenges include: securing the United States from terrorism, homeland security growth and the possibility of another devastating terrorist attack. Even though these are challenges that are bound to affect the United States in some way, the United States is getting better equipped with preparing for terrorist attacks and the fallout of a terrorist attack. To combat
Ever since 9/11 when both World Trade Center buildings were attacked by an Islamic Group, attacks by Islamic Terrorist on U.S. soil have been less of a threat than Domestic Terrorists. Domestic Terrorism has been shown these passed for years but yet again most of these cases have not been classified as acts of Domestic Terrorism they most likely fall into the category. Now the definition of Domestic Terrorism is basically "the committing of terrorist acts in the perpetrator 's own country against their fellow citizens". Now personally I don 't know how our government is working with these popular cases like Charlottesville, Las Vegas, and a new that just happened recently actually two but I 'll just say one, the New York attack that
Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the United States (US) government has focused on terrorism as the biggest threat to stability and national security in the homeland. There have been controversial laws enacted which tested an individual’s Constitutional rights versus the security of the country as a whole, military engagements in foreign countries designed to stop terrorism overseas before reaching the homeland, and a number of law enforcement and government initiatives implemented to identify and investigate terrorists before they commit acts of terrorism or pursue material support activities in support of terrorism. Federal law enforcement agencies have been criticized recently for failing to predict when homegrown violent extremists
The Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. is mandated to deal with terrorism problem that has a long history in the U.S. Terrorism has been a threat to U.S. security since the 1800. Terrorists continue to use powerful secret communication strategies and unexpected tools to achieve their intention in the U.S. soil. For example, the 9/11 terrorism attack that killed the highest number of American citizens in history succeeded because terrorist used hijacked passenger planes to perform the attack (Lutz and Lutz, 2013). Although the most notorious terrorism activity in the U.S. soil was performed by Islamic extremist, several other groups among them black militancy, anti-liberal, anti-government, Jewish extremist, fascist extremists, and Palestinian militancy among others have been reportedly caused a terrorist activity in the U.S. in the past and their continued existence still remain a major threat to the U.S. security (Lutz and Lutz, 2013). The counter-terrorism policy administered through the Bureau of Counterterrorism aims at partnering with local security agents, multilateral organizations, non-state actors and foreign governments to defeat local and global terrorism. The policy employs high level of coordinated strategies in securing international partnership to document and monitor and act appropriately to Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) as emerging organizations that coordinate international terrorist
The Attack on the September 11, and the consequent War on Terror changed how the American government and its public perceive terrorism and how to formulate a policy to counter the phenomenon. A couple of large wars were waged on the name of War on Terror and many other small wars and conflicts took place in numbers of countries and continents to eradicate the threat of a terrorist attack. Yet the terrorist groups survived and the United States were left with a large debt acquired by expensive counterterrorism effort. After more than a decade, we are still facing the same enemy with no concrete plan to end the conflict. As long as the United States remains as a world powerhouse and a key player in global stage, it will be a target of a terrorist attack, so there must be an effective plan to finally end the threat of terrorism. The counter-terrorism strategy of the United States following the Attack on September 11 has been largely ineffective. In order to end the Fourth Wave of Modern Terrorism, there must be a strategy shift within the United States government while simultaneously creating a counter-narrative to oppose Al-Qaeda 's propaganda.
The history of Terrorism in the United States is extensive, with present day being focused mainly on Islamic Terrorist groups and extremists. There have been 2,608 total attacks and 226 fatal attacks in the United States between 1970 and 2011. There have been attacks from within the United States from our own people and attacks that originated from abroad. Religion, political agendas, instilling fear and protesting policy have all been motives of terrorists throughout history. Terrorists will use any means necessary to promote their cause and to receive worldwide recognition and media attention from their acts. Terrorism can also be used, especially in regards to religion, to enforce a system of belief, opinion or viewpoint. The
Terrorism is nothing new to us citizens of the United States and even though it has been used since the early times of recorded history, it can be moderately hard to restrict terrorism. Terrorism has been termed variously as both an approach and policy a crime and a holy duty a reasonable reaction to repression and an unforgivable disgrace. Obviously, a lot depends on whose point of view is being represented. Terrorism has often been an operational tactic for the weaker side in a struggle. As an unbalanced form of conflict, it confers commanding power with many of the advantages of military force at a portion of the cost. Due to the mysterious nature and small size of terrorist organizations, they often offer opponents
In this day and age, the term terrorism is more than just the use of fear as a means of coercion but includes the use of terrorism as a means of revenge and suppression, but how do we handle it? We have always used our military might in response to terrorism since it began in the U.S. but it seems as if nothing has changed. We make it look like military force is the only way to handle terrorism and any new tactic that doesn’t involve violence won’t have any effect. Truly, there are many other methods to handle terrorism but few that are best for it. Some may prefer Sara Kershaw’s method “The Terrorist Mind: An Update”, where she talks to Dr. Horgan about former terrorist who are helping by providing information about
Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on 11 September 2001, there have been different U.S. strategies to try and combat the rise of global terrorism. The attacks made the entire world all too aware of the scale and scope of threats that terrorism can carry. The post-9/11 global climate has thus seen a shift in awareness of and response to terrorist threats. For the last thirteen years now the United States has denoted terrorism as one of the largest threats to national security and the “highest strategic objective of U.S. embassies worldwide”, a challenge which demands no less resolve than the was required to combat Nazism and Fascism during the last century. This is due to the subversive and penetrative nature of global terrorism, as terrorist groups have the potential to undermine governments and strike devastatingly and completely out of the blue. For this reason, the Unites States has ramped up its antiterrorism and counterterrorism efforts in order to combat the aforementioned transnational and global threat of terror.
Terrorism has become a big problem in the U.S. Even today it’s something that American’s can not control. Terrorism is defined as the act of people aiming to hurt a particular government or civilian population. It is meant to cause terror in the enemy 's eye (“Feeding the appetite”). Terrorism happens because a particular group or government does not agree with the ways of the opposing side. Terrorists deal with this by threatening or attacking the enemy. They try to aim towards monuments, large groups of people, historical sites, and national symbols to demonstrate power and kill a larger amount of civilians (“Are All Terrorist Acts Motivated”). There are speculations of terrorists around the world that target the U.S. However, the main terrorist group that target’s the U.S today is ISIS. Terrorism was and still is a big problem in the United States, this is proved through the tragic day of September 11th 2001.
Do to the overabundance of issues and difficulties involved in combating terrorism the United States will never completely end the threat of terrorist violence. For the last few decades, the U.S. has dealt with it fair share of terrorist incidents. These incidents have ranged from individuals with an axe to grind, small groups demanding social and political change, to attacks from transnational organizations with the intent to demoralize and destroy the United States. In order to protect its citizens and interests worldwide, the U.S. has committed to ending the terrorist threat. To accomplish this, the United States has utilized the military in various capacities, as well as all relevant political means. While these actions are normally effective
Terrorism is often described as both a crime and a holy duty; both a justified reaction to oppression and an unforgiveable atrocity. Not only that, it affects millions of people worldwide. Hardly any country in the world is left unblemished by the evil of terrorism. But the question remains: how does America tackle the horrific acts of radical terrorism endangering its citizens without unlawfully discriminating
Terrorism is nothing new. So long as there has been a governing body in power, ruled by a few or by many, there are some people that won’t or can’t comply with that system and will use violence and the threat of violence for political and social change. Since the attacks on 911 the USA has increased its homeland security posture as well as its international search to root out terrorism. Terrorist organizations operate globally and are able to recruit just by the propaganda they advertise. A person can now be trained through the internet, construct a means of attack and kill indiscriminately without ever meeting who they claim allegiance to. There are more targets and means to attack those targets than ever before. Terrorists evolve and learn. As such, so must those that serve to counter it. The US has some of the best counterterrorism agencies, units and professionals the world has seen but sometimes terrorists successfully carry out their plans.
Whether one refers to the Terrorist organization as Islamic State(IS), Islamic State of Iraq and Syria(ISIS), Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant(ISIL). Terror is the main goal of this organization and inflicting fear and anquish has been the priority and objective since the birth of this group. Religous believes and political motives drives this group to bring pain and suffering not just to the United States, this pain knows no boundaries and reaches all depths and borders around the entire globe. Departments and Agencies dealing in Homeland Security have dealt with this issue since the inception of ISIS, proper channels have been developed to stopping and aiding in the submission of ISIS. However, stopping a terrorist organization
September 11, 2001 is a day many will not forget. This is one of the deadliest terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, in U.S. history. The Islamic extremists group, al Qaeda led by Osama bin Laden, had hijacked four planes two of which had crashed into World Trade Center, one in the Pentagon, and the other in an open field in Pennsylvania. These attacks left many people dead and the U.S. in a state of chaos. After September 11, 2001 many were affected by the lives loss, the stock market being closed for several days, wars began over seas, the Department of Homeland Security was created, airport security became more stringent, and families weren 't able to get financial aid.
Have you ever had a fear for your family, your town, your country, or your world. How about the fear to have everything taken from you, destroyed, and not caring if it has hurt you or not? What about your fear and pain is, and can be someone else’s happiness? The fear of you being terrorized? That is terrorism. Someone else bringing fear and terrorizing you. That is a terrorist’s goal. Terrorism is common and is very difficult to stop. The government promises protection for the people, and their home, but they can not give that protection if they can not stop terrorism. Terrorism needs to stop to protect the live of the people, and their country.
