Recess is a period of time during the school day in which students take a break from learning and socialize with each other. The students get to do whatever they want, and they have fun with each other. A typical recess involves unstructured play which means that the students engage in their own activities without adults. Recess can also be structured which means that teachers set up mandatory activities for the students to play instead of letting them be free. There has recently been debate about whether or not recess should become structured or unstructured. One major reason why people support structured recess is because, “Recently, policy makers and funding organizations have called for more opportunities for daily activity as a means to address childhood obesity.” (Text 1, Lines 4-6). Structured recess lets students be able to play the same activity. This means that there will be less conflict because students often don’t agree with playing the same activity. For example, one group of students would want to play basketball while another group would want to play football. This doesn’t work out too well, and structured recess would fix that issue. “More children can actively participate in regular activity, irrespective of skill level.” (Text 1, Line 22). Structured recess can also be “a time for the child to make a personal choice between sedentary, physical, creative, or social options.” (Text 1, Lines 14-15). By allowing a structured recess, “Older elementary children may benefit from game instruction and encouragement for total class inclusion.” (Text 1, Lines

Recently, as kids get older, kids have less time to enjoy and get to play outside. It’s because of the ideas of parents or education administers who want their children to learn more and experience more at school. For instance, some parents want their child to learn high school math, even-though, their children may not in high school. However, interestingly, many researches have showed that having recess gives a lot of benefit to the student.

With the amount of time needed to be spent in the classroom many schools are cutting into recess time. Recess is a necessity for children to develop their social skills. The absence of like skills and creativity in the Core is affecting children more than anything.
Teachers and parents say that recess is just a nuisance and an excuse to be crazy and fight, and it also takes up a lot of time. Some adults also believe that it is unnecessary to older students because adults think that middle schoolers and high schoolers should focus only on schoolwork and grades.
This shows that recess could help in school because when were at school learning for hours everyone gets tired and bored so they just give up and don’t feel like doing anything or don't try hard enough. But as soon as they get a break which should at least be 20 minutes of recess it will let their brain or mind rest so that when they get back to learning they won't be as tired and try to put their best effort into it.

In the article Recess Makes Kids Smarter, it makes a case for why recess is necessary in elementary schools. It starts off talking about Nelly Torres, who is a parent at Chicago Public Schools, and how her first and fourth grader didn’t have recess until last year and even now it is only a 10 minute brake once a day. The cut back on recess was brought upon with the No Child Left Behind movement outing pressure in the school work and good scores. This made recess seem like a waste of time that could be used to improve scores. A few things are starting to support bringing recess back with the high childhood obesity rate and The First Lady talking so much about children’s exercise. The NASPE says that the children should get at least 20 minutes of recess per day.
Having recess at schools will help kids improve their health for the long run, in the article from CDC states, “Overweight and obesity, which are influenced by physical inactivity and poor diet, can increase one’s risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, arthritis, and poor health status” (CDC,1) This will benefit kids in future so they will be more healthy and have more opportunities.
