Social Media -- The Truth Social Media is a hotly debated topic in modern times. On one side, people say that it can help spread information quickly, or help catch criminals, but on the other, people often claim that they can be dangerous and that they lack privacy. The truth of the matter is, Social Networks should be banned, especially for children. Social Media destroys the basic human ability to interact with others. This is supported by the quote, “Communication is constantly evolving. Some people are as used to seeing their friends’ online avatar as they are their face,” said Yazino founder Hussein Chahine in The Telegraph. This shows how addicted people have become to Social Networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This is …show more content…
Future generations, this one included, will only spend more and more time on sites like these. Some people would say that Social Media helps catch and prosecute criminals, but the few times in which this does happen is heavily outweighed by the amount of privacy of which they lack, and the fact that they often expose users to government and corporate intrusions. A 2012 survey found that 13 million Facebook users said that they had not set or known about the site’s privacy settings, and another 28% shared all, or nearly all, of their posts publicly. Facebook is infamous for its lack of security, how it forces users to stay on and use their site and secretly tracks them. They often make privacy settings hard to find. Most, if not all, of their users would rather keep their info private, but Facebook and other Social Networking sites often make that a hard thing to do. Another report declared that the US Justice Department intercepted 1,661 pieces of information from social networking sites and emails in 2011. With many social media sites being money-focused, they often sell their user’s information to shady organizations. These sites expose their users too much and too often. This is further supported by the fact that the 2009 IRS training manual teaches agents to scan Facebook pages for information that might "assist in resolving a taxpayer case." Organizations such as this one now even promote social media ‘stalking’. It 's immensely difficult to stay and feel safe on
According to the article entitled “ The Good and Bad of Social Media” by Jason Howie, “ They have looked particularly at its effects on human emotion and relationship. Some studies show that using social media can cause depression.” The usage of the media doesn't just slow you down but can slowly shut your real life down. Therefore social media ends up hitting you from left to right or any possible way it has. The mindset of always wanting to be on it can destroy your life routines, makes you put up with things you shouldn’t put up with. Sometimes, people end up getting bullying and killed for some unnecessary things they do on the media. Furthermore, Howie writes “ We expect more from technology and less from one another. More and more, we desire technologies that provide a false idea of a relationship.” We depend on the media to give us the answers instead of asking our surroundings and communicating with them. We always believe what media tells us and whether it's false or not, we use it believing it's better than our own knowledge. Our privacy isn’t privacy because media after media we end up in a random page which can get our information in just one
First, social networking removes a lot of face-to-face interaction among individuals. This effectively creates less social beings that rely on social networking for communication and are less competent when it comes to in-person interaction. Social networking also allows for a sense of anonymity, which creates reckless morals and gives people the ability to say harmful things with no consequence. Finally, social networking is a major distraction and a huge waste of time. Children and adults often opt to spend their time on social networking sites rather than being productive members of society. These problems continue to get worse and will escalate if they are not addressed and solved immediately
In todays society, social media is detrimental because it causes distractions, create unnecessary drama, and it can open you up to identity theft and fraud. Social media can end up being the death of someone people and social media is no good at all it’s very bad.
Social media does impede on real world friendships and interactions because it takes away from one-on- one emotional experience with close friends which is vital for a happier and healthier life. Social media is ruining true friendships and conversation. Social media takes away from face to face relationships that are so important. Face to face relationships requires commitment, time, and nurturing. Social media sites impede on relationships by threating true friendships.
Social media is always being used from normal people, criminals, to the government trying to stop the criminals that get on social media looking for their next target. They will know where they will be, every-where they have been, and the places they are planning to go. That is what social media can do for criminals it gives them a way to find somebody no matter where they are. Social network sites such as Facebook or twitter are sites that criminals go to in order to find anyone they want from anywhere they want. Nobody understands how dangerous it is to put your personal information out there for everybody to see.
In today’s world almost every task which requires a human to move around is being replaced by technology. Technology/Social Media has caused huge distractions in almost every small aspect which doesn’t requires technology. Social networks are very harmful to people in today’s society, it causes people to rely more on them than what they would rely on if social media wasn’t in place of it.
First, Social media such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram have made people less interested in face-to-face interaction. People can stay for prolonged periods of hours just looking or checking what is happening in the media, seeing their friend’s pictures or tweeting about any topic on their phones. In fact, according to a study by Chicago University, it is much harder to resist the use of social media than the desire of smoking or having sexual intercourses (Meikle,
To start, it is important to understand what social media is and how it works. Danah Boyd and Nicole Ellison, the authors of “Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship” state, “We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semipublic profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within a system” (211). This quote shows that social media sites allow people to keep in touch with people who are friends with one another. According to Hampton et al. and Pew Research Center, the authors of “Social Networking Sites and Our Lives” and "Social Networking Fact Sheet" state, social networking sites grew drastically since the launch of the sites. Only 26% of
The negative part of the privacy issue in the social-networking area is defined by the fact that many other unknown people out of the millions of users of Facebook are going to be able to see your profile details and information. Those who can and have malevolent ideas in their minds are going to be able to sell your information for a profit (Tynan, 2010), to either businesses who take advantage of it or to use it in criminal and unlawful ways, therefore endangering the security and reputation. “With so much personal information being shared on the Web, people are becoming more aware of how their online activities can build and ruin reputations” (Gonsalves, 2010) of the users of the social networking website. “If your image is on the Web, chances are your visual anonymity has been
Not only has social media blurred reality lines, it has weakened face-to-face communication and interaction. People are less prone to talk to a crush or a friend about their day because they feel they already know what is going on based on a status update or a pic they might have saw. This again, is creating a false sense of reality that people rely on to navigate them through their social lives. This could be problematic that so much of society relies on a social network to empower human interaction. Social media has essentially taken over the real world and created it’s own microcosm within it.
Some people agree about social media thathave unnegative impact. First Social media makes someone selfish. Many people now not care about other people , they think most people just do strange things, do things that are not important, and make themselves feel disturbed about the existence of people, and feel always right in every thing that has been done.
When you’re at a party or social event, take a look around. Chances are you see at least one third of the guests on their phones. People used to have to communicate by letters, calling from a home phone, or simply face-to-face. Social media officially started in 1997 with the social media site, Six Degrees. Since then, there have been tons of social media sites. The most popular ones being Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. A survey was done recently that confirmed that one in one in four people prefer to talk through social media sites rather than in person. Social media is destroying people’s social skills. It's causing low self esteem in people, making people miss out on face-to-face interaction, and adding stress to their lives.
Social Networking sites may not provide privacy and expose users to the government. 13 million users said they had not set or did not know about Face book’s privacy settings and 28% shared all or nearly all of their posts publicity. The US Justice Department intercepted 1,661 pieces of information from social networking sites and emails in 2011. The 2009 IRS training manual teaches agents to scan Face book pages for information that might “assist in a resolving a taxpayer case.” 47 million Face book users have “liked” a health treatment or medical treatment page, information that is sometimes used by insurance companies to raise rates. (2008, March 18)
In today’s fast moving society many people rely on social media to get news quickly or send messages to friends. Social media has evolved from a tool used every so often to being relied upon by people every day. With people becoming so reliant on social media there have been concerns of whether or not it is good for society as a whole. By its definition social media means “forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)”. (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.) The word social implies relationships and human interaction according to Alfred Adler
According to statistics, there are 2.07 billion users on Facebook, 330 million users on Twitter, and 800 million users on Instagram. There are approximately 7.6 billion people on planet Earth, which means that nearly half of Earth’s inhabitants are active users of social media. Social media continues to be on the rise in modern day society. People are connected all day and every day at work, school, home, etc. We feel it is required and necessary to be connected through social media. As social media continues to grow, so does the desire to be connected. Users of social media are under the false impression that their safety and privacy is ensured. In this paper, I will discuss and analyze the dangers associated with privacy
