The social gender inequality has been a serious problem since the ancient period. Women were dominated by men and had little power in the society. Men were mostly doing agriculture work or hunting. On the contrary, women were basically doing works like house cleaning, breeding children, and making clothes that they played the domestic role in a family. Although the historical event—enlightenment emphasized the importance of human rights, it is excluded the women’s rights. After the emergency of capitalism, the situation became worse and women had less power and rights either in family or in society. People earn money through works and consume products according to their financial ability. The gap made by wealth, status, and power promotes …show more content…
1998 was the 150th Anniversary of the Women’s Rights Movement (Women’s Rights Movement, 2016). A lot of positive changes have been made since the convention. Probably people haven’t noticed, but over the past seven generations, dramatic social and legal changes have been accomplished. Elder people are more likely than young people to aware of the differences. The youth may think this is how life has always been. The changes have taken places in various areas such as in family, in government, in religions, in employment and just to name a few. Women worked very hard to make things changes. They strived through meetings, lobbying, public speaking, and many other ways that can inform people about the importance of women’s rights. Up till now, their deliberately work have made incredible …show more content…
It seems that no one can define the human rights. This creates problems and debates on the subject of human rights. If the human rights can’t be defined, then there will be no standard for having the human rights. So that the social gender inequality will no longer exist because the rights are subjective instead of objective. There has no way to exam the true or false of the rights so that the so-called human rights are meaningless. Under this situation, men and women are no difference. The period when Arendt wrote this piece of work was the time women’s right movements making further progress. Women already earn themselves some rights and freedom so that they can have a broader platform to express opinions. She didn’t afraid of writing aggressive or controversial facts that may cause concern in the society. It was a different world than it used to be. Women had gain respects and rights and they began to involve deeper into the society. This can’t be achieved without the hard striving for almost a century from women’s rights
The extension of women’s rights from 1877 to the mid 1970s, has changed over time along with the ideals of the different eras. From the original traditional values to those wild and free spirits that dominated the culture in the seventies, since then women and their rights have changed.
Inequality between different groups of people within the United States is concerning for many sociologists and society in general. One of the main inequalities throughout the United States is gender inequality. Gender inequity is found in all past and present societies. It takes the form of patriarchy. From the patriarchal point of view, gender inequality can be traced back to biological differences in early societies (“Steven Goldberg on Patriarchy” 2006). This inequality is present in society through many different forms, including job segregation, the gender pay gap, and a great difference in women’s political representation (Joan Acker, 1989).
Women have historically had a rocky relationship with governmental, cultural, religious, and social rights. The Women’s Rights movement has been in effect since approximately 1792, with the publication of the first feminist work, “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, by British writer Mary Wollstonecraft” (“Women’s Rights Movement”). While social changes have occurred and more progressive laws have been put into place throughout the years, there is still not equality between the sexes. Additionally, gender roles in different countries differ greatly. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the major causes and concerns of the Women’s Rights movements throughout the decades, as well as denote the differences between more progressive societies and their less accepting counterparts.
As Quindlen states, "As Americans read..." that tells us right there that she is trying to reach all Americans. As for her purpose, with her references to the treatment of Afghanistan women I am lead to believe that she is trying to bring light to an existence of an example of women inequality in America. Looking at when it was published, only a couple of months after September 11th, it was perfect timing to throw in on this topic. The possibility of a draft was a reality or at the very least many believe it was a possibility. I would have to agree with her thesis, women should also be required to register for the military draft. I have come to stand against any type of inequality, whether it be (to name a few) race, gender, age, religious
Equality, gender roles, and restrictions are important topics that many activists, leaders, and speakers have worked towards in order to provide to the world. The society we have now has been created in part by the determination and perseverance of their actions, speeches, and rallies. The world was a different place about 10 years ago, 20 years ago, and even more than 50 years ago. Associating women with household work and children, and men with difficult jobs and hard work, were can be observed throughout time that were previously set in past centuries. Both women and men have changed in associations, as we can currently observe in today’s society. Gender roles have switched, and new decrees have enabled individuals to have their equality
For 91 years, the United States of America has become the sole superpower of the world by maintaining its global leadership and competitive position in both military and economic strength. As jobs and companies are being created around the world to improve their infrastructure and economy, the United States of America must also be willing to get back on its feet and continue to become the superpower it is. As the years continue, the future will be different with in advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For the United States of America according to a 2008 survey by USA Today states that only 26% of the people who were surveyed had a clear understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and the United States citizens ability in math, science, and problem solving has dropped below to
“The US is the largest economy in the world,” yet inequalities within it plague it. Though there are several measures of inequality, some measures of inequality that seem to be especially daunting are gender inequality and wealth inequality.
For years, women have been viewed as weak, indecisive, and subjective. Women have become more empowered since their suffrage and earning their rights. Although, they have their rights, women are not equal to men in today’s society because of unequal pay and discrimination. The pay between the two gender in recent college graduates and stabilized jobs opt towards males. Women are discriminated in sports, entertainment , and politics in multiple ways. Also, the ratios between men and women in corporate offices, the entertainment business, and political positions is off balance, in favor of men.
Feminism and gender inequality are not just issues that women face in the US, but the entire world. Comparatively, women in the US are actually treated much better than women of other countries, such as those in the Middle East, where women have no rights and are seen as property. Talk about objectification! Transnational feminism takes a look at the same women’s issues that we have in the US and how they affect women in other countries. Transnational feminism also takes into account the various cultural difference that might also affect these issues and create other issues that women of different origins might face. Likewise, these cultural differences also affect the social construction of gender and maintain gender inequality. For example, Asian and African countries still abide by the very traditional patriarch lifestyle, in which the men are the “breadwinners” and women do the housework and take care of the children. Because many of these countries have corrupt governments, women remain having no rights due to the fear of punishment they would receive for trying to combat these issues. It is hard to fight for rights when some countries don’t even consider women as humans, but this is where transnational feminists come in. They fight for equal rights for all women, regardless of their ethnicity, race, sexuality, size, age, etc. because women are worthy of fair treatment and shouldn’t have to prove that.
Inequality, inequality is a strong word that comes to my mind when I think of problems going on in our world. This situation is happening all over the world and it's affecting many people including. This situation affects me for the following reasons which include gender diversity and racism.
As time has progressed and colonization has evolved, gender in the United States has been constructed in a manner that is unknown in other countries. Our society has made different stereotypes for certain sexes. It is socially impossible to not make a collation between sex and gender in the United States. Women are viewed the same in the professional world and in the home life perspective. All roles played by women are considered to be inadequate or insignificant compared to men. Gender characteristics, such as masculinity and femininity, has become a cultural construct. Gender is a social construct that was designed to confine people to a certain title and cultural agenda.
There is supposed to be equal protection for everyone in the United States, but in reality, there isn’t. People who are minority and of color get targeted, because of their race, gender, and class, while wealthy white people are put on a pedal stool and hardly ever get in trouble by the law. In many case the wealthy are not arrested nor are they given a sentence for their wrongful doing, they are allowed to get away with murder (86). In the meantime, poor people are not given the same treatment and can be sentence to 15 years, 25 years, or life in prison for committing minor offense. The Social sphere is inequality that has increased, women who work the same hours as a man are looked down on because they are supposed to be at home with the
Why does gender equality matter? Around the world the world there are some countries that have zero gender equality while others may have more gender equality. Although this may not seem like a big deal, there are many women who deserve more. That's why i believe there is no gender equality in the US because of the treatment in women's sports, women's equal pay, and equal representation.
According to The Declaration of Independence , "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable right" (Jefferson) . Does much of that statement holds any truth? America is still recognized as the greatest country in the world, as well as an elite superpower; but has many short comings. Some persons may believe that there has always been inequality in the legal system, since the beginning of time. For instance, we "Americans" are always in the public eye or hold such precedence when it comes to the "American Dream" or image of how we are perceived by the world. Every successful American or the government wants to promote that.
Both within and across different cultures we find great consistency in standards of desirable gender-role behavior. Males are expected to be independent, assertive, and competitive; females are expected to be more passive, sensitive, and supportive. These beliefs have changed over the past twenty years within the United States and apparently around the world as well. Therefore, modern society has been trying for the past decade to eliminate all of these stereotypes and double standards, thus creating equality among genders. However, women are not treated equally with men in developing countries because most women take low-level jobs. Last year, I came back to my hometown and visited some local factories. The industry is about producing textiles and the most labor in it were females who live on lower-wage. Even the circumstance changed, the equality between gender is still an issue.
