Smoking is an activity that has been around for many years for people to use and adapt into their lifestyle. It is a tool that many people use to help reduce the stresses of life and put them in a comfortable position that enables them to cope with the hectic lifestyle they are living. However, smoking has been scientifically proven to cause many types of cancer, the most common being lung cancer resulting in numerous deaths across the United States. Personal actions of active smokers affect others who wish to decline in the inhalation of tobaccos wide quantity of 7,000 chemicals (“Secondhand Smoke"). In theory, to partake in an action that has an unsure timeline of death is ones own choice; however, making this decision for others by subjecting them to harm is unlawful. Over the years, there has been much debate about the ethical concerns of second-hand smoke. Inhaling second hand smoke is an unavoidable consequence of being in the vicinity of smokers, exposing non-smokers to the same harmful chemicals as those who voluntarily engaged in it. While acknowledging the selfish nature of second hand smoking, governments in various countries like Singapore have put in place smoke-free laws that restricts smokers from smoking in certain public places ("Smoking prohibition," 2013). However, there are many outdoor areas, which the government cannot possibly ban as well, signalling that the ethical concerns of the smoke released from smoking cannot be eliminated.

Smoking is an activity in the society that has become a serious topic as it causes health problems to both smokers and passive smokers due to the inhalation of tobacco. Consequently, the most visible alternative for the legislators and other institutions in various countries is the banning of smoking in public. Smoking is not only a social habit that does harm non-smokers but it also takes away their freedom from being forced to inhale the contents of the cigarettes. Nowadays, many developed countries around the world enacted laws and established rules against smoking in public areas as a consequence of effecting "second smokers" especially children and babies. Banning should be considered the possible solution to this problem.

Many smokers believe that it is not right to have to walk a far away from a public place just to smoke. They believe it is not fair to them; they should be able to smoke where they want,

First to break down this idea of smoking in public places, there has to be a common idea, ground or definition of the word freedom and what it means. What freedom means is to have the power to act, speak or think as one wants to without any hindrance or restriction. which means people should be aloud to smoke wherever they please without any hesitation because that are the people rights.

It has become common knowledge that smoking is bad for people’s health, nonetheless people continue to smoke. To be honest, that is fine. If people want to endanger themselves by smoking then I wish them a swift and peaceful end (though most smokers die a slow and agonizing death). What is not acceptable is the effect that smoke has on non-smokers who have almost no way of getting away from smoke unless they want to stay in their house. Smokers affect everyone around them for the worse. Smoking should be restricted or banned from all public places because the health of non-smokers should not be jeopardized by secondhand smoke.

Why I'm in this frame of mind, people would like the choice to stop not forced to do so, most smokers understand that few people whom don't smoke will be effected and do walk away to have their smoke, But non smokers don't have they same frame of mind, they want to go where they aren't allowed not meaning they not allowed but it is after all allocated for smokers. Back in 1964 the first surgeon general’s report on the adverse effects of smoking was published (1). Only a year had passed since the reports was published when the first law was set in place, the (cigarette labeling and advertising act of 1965) was the first of many laws that would be passed over the last 60 years (1). By 1971 the surgeon general had proposed a federal ban in public places followed by a report in 1972 that talked about the effects of secondhand smoke (1).
