Persuasive essay: Should students start school later in the morning? "Should I finish my homework or go to sleep" is a question students are challenged with on a daily basis. A teenager who doesn’t get enough sleep often are sluggish and unproductive throughout the day. In order for the school to be beneficial for the students, school should start later in the mornings; however, other people disagree and say if we start later it would cause the students to end later. Studies show students who don’t get enough sleep, often suffer mental and physical dis-orders (aap.org). Students are expected to be fully awake and participating in all their classes. If a student spends all night studying and goes to sleep late, they have a hard time functioning in the morning. On average a teenager gets six to seven hours of sleep a night (sleepfoundation.org). Sleep deprivation affects a student's physical health. When we are sleeping, our bodies take a break from reality, and we wake up refreshed and calm. Then again, if students don't get enough sleep they can't function properly, the students are exhausted and stressed out. Sleep deprivation affects the way our body functions; the students’ height, strength and immune system weaken. Students who drive could get into car accidents by falling asleep at the wheel. High school students should have a later starting time in school due to students not getting the amount of sleep they need to function. Students that stay up late at night are way too tired to learn when they get to school early in the morning. Most students who do stay up late are unable to sleep due to melatonin not yet being produced. This shows that starting school at a later time would have many positive benefits. These benefits include higher test scores, increased attendance, more participation from students, and higher performance from athletes.

For years, experts have debated when the proper start time for high schools in America should be. Most high schools start at around 8:00 A.M. and some even earlier. New findings have led many experts to believe that schools should start later than 8:00, around 9:00 to 9:30. Most students would agree and appreciate the extra sleep. Starting school later would be beneficial because teenagers need to go to bed later and get up later, less sleep for students means lower test scores, and student health and safety is greatly improved when schools delay start times.
A controversial topic that is constantly being argued over is whether schools should start later; new scientific research suggests that the internal sleep clock changes drastically during teenage years. This is what causes teenagers to experience difficulty waking up and going to sleep early. Therefore, I believe that we should start schools at a later time.
I think High School should start later. I think this for three reasons which are that students do not get enough sleep, grades will suffer, and students will not be motivated to learn. So I believe school should start later.
Students all over the United States complain about the start times of the school day. Due to the school start times, students are often unable to receive the amount of sleep recommended by their teachers, as well as being unable to complete everyday activities from lack of energy. Sleep is, without a doubt, one of the uttermost needs for the human body to function to its full potential. Every early August, groggy teens begin another year of being forced to fight their bodies natural sleep cycle. Studies have shown that kids perform better in school and in other aspects of their lives when they get more sleep. Students stress over school because they have to push out things they want to do in order to get the grade that is a letter which symbolizes their success and importance to society. It is hard to accomplish this when students have restrictions and limits to when they have to sleep and wake up. Teens don’t perform as well as they should when they are sleepy. Therefore, schools should start later so students perform better, are less depressed, and so it is less dangerous to get to school in the morning.
Should schools start later in the day? Yes, I think schools should start later in the day because students would be more prepared for school and would be more awake to do school work in class such as projects, class work, etc. a lot of students are not morning people. When students get up at 6:30 they get all their stuff ready for school for example regular students brush teeth, grab a shower, and after they're done with that they off to school grumpy because I don't think that 8 hours is enough sleep for kids that have to go to school in the morning.
Schools are filled with people each day. Many of these people are tired and have trouble focusing on schoolwork. Why are these students like this? Many of us are like this, just waiting for the time you can stop listening to teachers talk about their subjects. However, we can become more focused. The easiest way is to get more sleep. What can we move out of our busy schedules? Nothing really. So, all schools should start later. I will discuss the effects of a lack of sleep, the solution, and the consequences of the action we take. 1.Teen’s biological clocks cause them to fall asleep and wake up at later times. The American Association of Pediatrics said, “research indicates that the average teenager in today’s society has difficulty falling asleep before 11:00 PM and is best suited to wake at 8:00 AM or later.” and that “most adolescents begin to experience a sleep–wake “phase delay”, manifested as a shift of up to 2 hours relative to sleep– wake cycles in middle childhood.” Simply stated, teenagers fall asleep later and wake up later than they did when they were younger. The National Sleep Foundation said that “...they [adolescents] need 8.5-9.25 hours of sleep.” These show a lack of sleep. If a teenager falls asleep at exactly 11PM, and has to wake up at 7 AM to get ready for school, they will only get 8 hours of sleep, a little below the recommended 8.5 hour minimum. Losing that half hour or so of sleep every night is what is causing us as teenagers to be tired and unfocused during the school day. This is not as uncommon as you might think. The CDC said that approximately 31% of high school students get enough sleep each night. That is 69 out of every 100 of us that don’t sleep enough. This is not it. Other reasons for a lack of sleep include: irregular bedtimes, and use of technology in the evening. We have now learned that most of us aren’t getting enough sleep. Getting enough sleep means teenagers will be healthier. In an article written by the CDC, it said, “Adolescents who do not get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily physical activity, suffer from depressive symptoms, and engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs.”
Education is an important aspect of any adolescents’ life. High school prepares adolescents for adulthood and provides them with prime information. The most obvious drawback to the typical high school system is how early in the morning it begins. Adolescents are “programmed” in a sense that their bodies begin to produce the melatonin needed for sleep at a much later time than younger children or adults. Without a sufficient amount of sleep, the human brain suffers cognition and memory issues. This is not an ideal prerequisite for learning. High school students remain exhausted of waking up every weekday at 5am just to manage getting ready for school. Student’s can’t concentrate and manage a healthy lifestyle to obtain an education if the scholar is half awake. Personally you can witness when students come into class to put their head down and just go to sleep through the lesson, or you even recognize heavy bags under their eyes when you take a glimpse at the student’s face.
