Statistically, the average serial killer is a white male from a lower-to-middle-class background, usually in his twenties or thirties. Many were physically or emotionally abused by parents. Some were adopted. As children, fledgling serial killers often set fires, torture animals, and wet their beds (these red-flag behaviors are known as the “triad” of symptoms.) Brain injuries are common. Some are very intelligent and have shown great promise as successful professionals. They are also fascinated with the police and authority in general (Scott).

Cold cases give the most controversial mysteries since the killers have never been truly identified. One of those is the Zodiac, he’s been fascinating but terrifying investigators since the first victim was discovered. The horrors in California began on Friday, December 20, 1968 in the city of Vallejo when sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen and seventeen-year-old David Faraday were killed while out on a date. At the time, according to Haugen (2011), they had driven to a remote lover’s lane on Lake Herman Road. It was while they were there that a vehicle stopped nearby and the driver got out, shot out the rear passenger window of David Faraday’s station wagon, and then shot the left rear tire. The man shot Faraday behind the left ear, while Betty Lou Jensen was running for the road. After he mocked police and made threats through letters sent to area newspapers from 1969 to 1974, further communication from him abruptly stopped. Despite an comprehensive search for the killer and the investigation into several suspects, no one was ever arrested for the crimes and the case remains open. The Zodiac Killer, an unidentified serial killer active in northern California from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, can now be identified as Rafael Edward Cruz (also known as Ted Cruz). It has almost been 44 years since the Zodiac Killer’s last murder, 44 years that Ted Cruz had to possibly commit more murders. Some facts that can support Ted Cruz is responsible for 5 confirmed killings is that police sketches closely resemble Cruz, he had the knowledge to create the complicated and unsolvable cryptograms, his handwriting style matched that of the Zodiac Killer’s, and his campaign logo resembles the symbol used by the killer. It is quite suspicious that Cruz has not yet commented nor denied that he is the killer.
