Young love is deeply rooted in infatuation, immaturity and physical attraction.William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet shows that young love is volatile and its greatest adversary can be inexperience, immaturity and poor communication. The key aspects behind a strong relationship are trust, transparency and maturity, The lovers seem to have trust and transparency with one another but lack communication among other things. I feel that Romeo’s previous infatuation with Rosaline discredits his love for Juliet. Furthermore I feel that Romeos ego is what brought his relationship down. I also believe that Friar Lawrence is the only other character to blame due to his role in providing poison and marrying two unstable teenagers. Lastly it is …show more content…
For example, when Romeo says “out of her favor, where I am in love.”[1.1.158]. Romeo also says “a right good markman! and she’s fair I love.”[1.1.197]. The statements mean that “I love someone, she doesn't love me” and the second statement means “Then you were right on target. The woman I love is beautiful.”. These statements that Romeo expressed communicated that he was obsessed with her and couldn't forget her. This is the reason that I feel that Romeo’s relation with Juliet is out of confusion and …show more content…
Oh, he’s the courageous captain of compliments. He fights as you sing prick-song, keeps time, distance, and proportion. He rests his minim rests—one, two, and the third in your bosom.”[2.4.19-22]. Overall, this quote and the supporting details communicate that Romeo took too much pride in his love life and when it was secured he started focusing on other aspects of his life. Romeo was ultimately to blame for his and his lover’s
Romeo is an emotional character who tries finding love in all sorts of ways which is why he is so open to express himself. In the beginning of the play Romeo was heartbroken due to a rejection from a Capulet girl named Rosaline. This rejection then helped Romeo understand love in a different way. Romeo states “One fairer than my love, the all seeing sun Ne’er saw her match since first the world begun” (1.2. 95-96). This quote shows that Romeo in the beginning of the play was stuck on Rosaline, and it portrays how heartbreak from a rejection can change your emotions and decision making. Heart break opened up Romeo’s eyes into the real world after Rosaline did not love Romeo back. Romeo now discovered that love is not always gonna equal out to happiness. In the play Romeo states “Is love a tender thing, it is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like a thorn” (1.4. 23-24). This quote is significant because Romeo later in the story states that love isn’t always gonna be perfect, there will be flaws and hardships. Shakespeare represented Romeo as a
As the old saying goes, young love is blind. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, two star-crossed lovers defying their families’ ancient grudge to be with each other, even if that means in death. The question is who is to blame? Romeo, even in death should be held responsible. If it weren’t for his series of misguided actions the outcome would have been very different. The situations he created for himself showed his fickle nature, impulsive behavior and impatient demeanor towards everything that occurred.
This lust-filled quote proclaimed by Juliet and intended for Romeo is yet another example of false love or love based on looks in their relationship. Lust is the same as false love, and so this quote can be used as a demonstration of both. Romeo again states his feelings for not Juliet but rather Juliet’s
Rabbi David Wolpe from time.com says that, “Yes, you can love things that do not love you back… but the love of other people is directional… you don't’ just love, but you love at someone” (Rabbi David Wolpe 6). Romeo is loving the idea of loving Juliet not Juliet herself. He only loves her looks as he has told her many times before. You cannot know everything about someone by a couple of hours together. All that Juliet talks about in their short time together is wanting to get married to Romeo and losing her virginity. So, Romeo only likes the idea of love and Juliet only has lust towards
Love is an emotion many-if not all- desire for in their life, but should a person’s past flings call that love into question? Romeo had strong feelings for two different people in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, one being Rosaline and the other being Juliet. Romeo’s feelings for Rosaline were more of an infatuation than love, but this does not weaken the credibility of his love of Juliet. There are three reasons that must be taken into account when talking about the connection between his infatuation with Rosaline and his love for Juliet. Many people have infatuations at some point in their lives before they meet someone they truly love, he learns many things from his infatuation that help to deepen his
Romeo explains how love is a constant battle within him when he exclaims “brawling love” and “loving hate”. He lets out his sadness when he says “heavy lightness” which means sad happiness, and “serious vanity”, which means serious foolishness. All of this language is very complex and not clear, which is also a sign that Romeo is not truly in love. Romeo uses dark diction in his comparisons when he says “brawling”, “hate”, and “heavy”, which shows the darkness of courtly love and how it can eat someone up emotionally. Next, courtly love is shown through figurative language when Romeo uses an extended metaphor to describe his feelings for Juliet. Romeo states this complex metaphor in the quote, “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun./ Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,/ Who is already sick and pale with
Through terms of contrast, Shakespeare characterizes Romeo as emotionally complex because two emotions are always inside of him. Romeo describes love as “heavy lightness” (1.1.171) to show what it feels like to love and not be loved back. Romeo juxtaposes his emotions by comparing heavy to lightness to show how he is always full of many emotions. Romeo’s emotion is shown when he says that to love and not be loved back is like “loving hate”(1.1.169). Two emotions always exist within him and he juxtaposes them by comparing his love and passion to his hatred. Romeo thinks mostly about the good and thinks little of the
1. In this Scene, the nurse is shown to have a really close bond with Juliet. She seems to have a better relation than her mother. The nurse lost her daughter “Susan”(1.3 Line 20) as she was the same “age”(1.1 Line 21) as Juliet, which makes the nurse closer to Juliet and treats her as a daughter.
Romeo at the beginning of the play doesn't have the most level-headed understand of what real love is and as an example at the beginning of the play he has "fallen in love" with Rosaline and proclaimed that she is the perfect example of a women. Then later on completely forgets about her after seeing Juliet. This gives the reader the sense that Romeo is not very deep in his feelings for women and has a more superficial idea of what love is. Throughout the play though Shakespeare was able to convey how Romeo has matured in his attitude toward love from a shallow desire to a profound and intense passion. His fidelity toward Juliet is quite abstract in the sense that he loves her enough to commit suicide because he feels that he is not able to continue his lie without her which is a demonstration of his faithfulness and loyalty to her. In Romeo and Juliet Romeo is driven by his emotions a lot of the time when making decisions. Examples of him doing this are that because of anger compels him to kill Tybalt in a duel to avenge to death of his friend and despair causes him to take his own life upon hearing of Juliet's death. He also is driven many times by his love for Juliet. Love forces him to make the reckless decision to sneak into the garden of his enemy's daughter and risk death only to catch a glimpse of her. These intense depths of feeing are what drive the character in this story
Shakespeare uses detailed examples to draw clear images of his characters for the audience. Romeo and Juliet is a play about two rival families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo struggles because he is blinded by his love for Juliet and will do anything, even risk death, to see Juliet. Shakespeare uses examples in the story to portray Romeo as an impulsive and passionate character. He demonstrates that he is passionate and impulsive by his inner thoughts and feelings, his actions, and how others view him.
First reason I think it's on Romeo is because, Romeo was upset that the one he ''loved'' didn't feel the same so he is upset and is not acting as himself. Romeo loved another women, yet she does not love him back so he is speaking with Benvolio of how he is upset and wants her to feel the same. According to the text Romeo speaks'' out of her favor, where I am in love.'' This reasoning is pretty much saying that he is looking for love where love is not, and is acting as if he is desperate for love.
Romeo says this when he saw Juliet across the room. This shows that he truly only loves by looks because even though he hasn’t met her yet, he says he is in love with her already. This action is a cause of the tragic ending because his romantic tendencies led him to kiss Juliet and the two start to “fall in love” with one another. The two star crossed lovers are both too young to know that true love doesn’t happen at first
From this you can conjecture that Romeo isn't very committed to a relationship at the given moment and he believes that true love only comes from the outside and not the
For example, when Romeo encounters Juliet on her balcony right after the party, she says, “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honorable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, by one that I’ll procure to come to thee, where and what time thou wilt perform the rite” (2.2.142-146). Juliet agrees to marry him right away, without knowing anything about him except his name and family. This suggests that Juliet is attracted to a superficial aspect of Romeo, most likely his looks; she doesn’t take the time to get to know him properly and decide whether or not she truly loves him. Additionally, Juliet’s strong rejection of her household is seen when Juliet refuses the arranged marriage with Paris: “I pray you tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris” (3.5.121-124). In this scene, it’s clear that Romeo is hated by Lady and Lord Capulet (since he’s a Montague), and Juliet uses that to aggravate her mother. Juliet tells Lady Capulet that she would rather marry Romeo over Paris, which extremely angers her mother. The fact that Juliet uses Romeo to rebel against her parents indicates that to Juliet, marrying Romeo is a way she can rebel and possibly escape her oppressive household rather than an act of true
Thesis: In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are loyal, act rashly, and feel pain, because they are in love with each other.
