Stacey ended up getting into a fight with T.J. “Anybody seen T.J.?” (Taylor pg 82) This is after they take the test and stacey was mad! He was mad because when stacey was cheating he saw Stacey’s mom coming so he got scared and slipped them to Stacey. Since his mom was so close he did not have time to dispose of the notes so he got whipped in front of his whole class for what T.J. did! The quote shows that Stacey was looking for T.J. He ended up finding out that he was at the Wallace Store. Stacey ran down to the Wallace Store even though he was not allowed to, but he didn’t care. They started to fight. Throwing punches and rolling around on the ground, then all of a sudden Mr. Morrison shows up in the mule waggon. Like a mouse Mr. Morrison snuck up and stopped the fight. The Logans rode back on the mule waggon. On the waggon Stacey says this, “Mr. Morrison, you…. You gonna tell Mama?” This shows that he was respecting Mr. Morrison for his decision. Stacey, and all of the Logan kids woke up when T.J. came banging at their door. They bring him inside to see what was wrong and why he was here. When they bring him inside he tells the story of why he was hurt. T.J. wanted a pearl handled pistol real bad! R.W. and Melvin decided to rob the mercantile. R.W. and Melvin killed Mr. Barnett and knocked out Mrs.Barnett. When T.J. said he would tell everything that’s when R.W. and Melvin started to beat him. Seeing that T.J. was hurt very bad Stacey said “Let me go get big Ma, she’ll know what to do.” T.J. denied this request because he was scared and just wanted to go home. This shows how good of a friend Stacey is to T.J. although T.J. denied Stacey was willing to help him out. So Stacey helped T.J, back to his house but when he got there the “night riders” came and cleared out T.J.’s house. Stacey went back home and asked his dad this specific question “Papa could he, ……… could he die?” This shows how afraid Stacey was for T.J. Stacey was a very good friend to T.J. despite what T.J. had done to
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a wondrous book with many different characters that have their own unique traits. One of the characters in this book is Cassie, who is a nine-year-old girl living in Mississippi during the Great Depression. The trait that best describes her is being courageous. The denotative definition of courageous is. “Not deterred by danger or pain; brave.”
“What’s everybody waiting ‘round for?” “And where’s Stacey?” demanded Little Man. Little WIllie smiled. “Stacey inside with Miz Logan. He got whipped today.” “Whipped!” I cried. “Why, can’t nobody whip Stacey. Who done it?” “Your Mama,” laughed Little WIllie. “Mama!” Christopher-John, Little Man, and I exclaimed. “Why’d Mama do that?” asked Christopher-John. “She caught him with cheat notes during the history examination.” So, as the book said Stacey took the blame for a big deal, Stacey didn’t care if he got in trouble. Stacey was just wanting to make sure T.J. didn’t get in trouble. Stacey took and showed a big sign of courage in Chapter

TJ gets himself in trouble with R.W. and Melvin Simms, two white brothers. The boys only want TJ around so they have someone to put the blame on and make fun of him. When TJ wants a very nice handgun at the Barnett Mercantile, the Simms brothers fool him into thinking that his dream is about to come true. RW and Melvin convinced TJ to try to steal the gun. They were caught in the act and the brothers punished TJ horribly. TJ tapped on the Logans door in the middle of the night. Stacey and Cassie answered the door. They knew they had to help him despite the negative acts against their family. “Stacey? I whispered afraid of what he might do. As far back as I could remember, Stacey had felt a responsibility for TJ I had never really understood why. Perhaps he felt that even a person as despicable as TJ needed someone he could call “friend”, or perhaps he sensed TJ’s vulnerability better than TJ did himself. Stacey, you ain’t goin’ are you?... You go on back to bed Cassie. I’ll be alright.” (pg. 249) This quote is a prime example of Stacey’s courage. Stacey knows that helping TJ could get him in trouble or even killed. Stacey is a true friend, and a brave one too.

Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry is set during the Great Depression, in the rural areas of Mississippi. The majority of the people in this community are sharecroppers, who are greatly dependent on plantation farming. The Logan family is fortunate because they have a piece of land of their own, so unlike other black sharecroppers they do not have to be dependent on the whites. However, due to the sharp decrease in the price of the cotton crop the family have to work hard to keep it in their hands, whilst also providing food in order for them to survive. The situation is further worsened because of the severity of racism and segregation in the society. The Logans are one of the few families
During the climax of the book, the beating of the Averys, Stacey stayed behind to watch the violent scene while the Logan kids went safely back home to their parents. According to the text, “Stacey whispered “ you take Little Man and Christopher John and y’all-” (Taylor,253). Even though Stacey got cut off he was going to tell the kids to go home, and that he would stay there and keep watch of what was going on between the white and the blacks, which was extremely courageous. The text also says, “Papa spun around suddenly. “Gotta get him out of there,” he said, moving quicker than I had thought possible with his bad leg.” (Taylor,259). This shows how worried Stacey’s parents were about him being close to all the fighting, which shows how courageous he was to be there. Stacey’s bravery further proves that being courageous, means you have to stand up for your convictions and
Well Stacey had to on time, they were just about to go to sleep and then Stacey looks out the window and sees the night men coming up there driveway and Stacey know that they are coming to get T.J because he is always in trouble for doing something like being friends with the sim boys (they are white kids that are kinda mischievous) and trying to steal and cheat (like i said in paragraph 2 line 4-7) he is just not a good kid but he knows better. Whenever Stacey sees the night men to his door he quietly whispers “T.J. get down here the night men are here and they are coming to get you so hurry up” Taylor page 79 then T.J. did what he was told and hid. The night men came to the door and knocked and Big Ma (another character in the story) opens the door and then Stacey come to the door and the night-men then ask “is T.J. here little fella”? Taylor page 82; Stacey then says “no Mr i have not seen him at all” then they leave and Stacey feel like he just took a huge brick off of his shoulders. Then her goes to the room and tells T.J. “you are fine now get up” and that is what he did. This shows how T.J will take up for his friends when there are in need of help or just a laugh or a
Did you know that you have been lied to? Time and time again, people in and out of fiction have told you things that aren’t exactly true, but you both knew it was a lie (a rather sarcastic one at that). This is an example of what is called irony— what results when the actual outcome differs from what was expected— and irony is something that is heavily featured in Mildred Taylor’s historical fiction novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. In this book Mildred Taylor’s use of irony helps to accomplish three main tasks: characterize the monochromatic cast of characters, elucidate and illuminate the main theme of the passage, creating, setting, and modifying the ambiance and mood of the various chapters.
We first meet TJ Avery when Cassie, Stacey, Little Man and Christopher-John are walking to school. Right from the very start we find out that none of them actually likes TJ, except for Stacey. The reader sees that he is a liar, a cheat and a
Courage is shown when a character stands up for what they think and express. In roll of thunder hear my cry, Stacey shows the most courage by going to help T.J, digging the trench, and staying with T.J when he was wanted.
Stacey's friendship with T.J is a weak bond that they hold. If something would come in between Stacey’s and TJ’s friendship it would surely break. The reason why Stacey lets TJ get away with somethings is because TJ is Stacey's best friend. Even though they may fight that doesn’t mean that they aren't friends any more.
First, Stacey Logan believes that friendship is very important, and if you are friends you do not get your friends in trouble on purpose. For example, when TJ lied and made it look like Stacey cheated on the test, Stacey did not snitch on TJ, instead he took the whipping and got into a lot of trouble. Next, Jeremy Simms shows the reader that he does not care about skin color he only wants friends that are nice to him. He walks to school with the Logan family, even though he knows his family will be very mad. Finally, TJ Avery is a very dishonest boy that will do anything that will help him, but he never takes the blame for the things that he does. For example, he cheated on a test, but made it look like Stacey Logan was the one cheating, so
One day, T.J. brought notes to school to cheat on a test. T.J. handed the cheat sheet to Stacey when he did not want it. Stacey got caught and got blamed for the cheat sheets T.J. gave him. After school, Stacey was very very very mad. When school ended, Stacey stood up for himself and chased T.J. down to the Wallace store to beat him up.
