As we all know – there are tons of social issues within the entire world that Criminal Justice Practitioners deal with, most likely, on a daily basis. One of the many social issues I’ve chosen is Prison Overcrowding.
Prison Overcrowding is one of America’s most critical issues in the Criminal Justice system. Just as the name states, the problem is insufficient jail space – for which the solution would be to build more facilities. What causes this problem? There are a lot of people in the world that believe putting all crime doers in jail is the best resolution. Let’s be honest here

The third issue is the extent to which law enforcement emphasis should be on persons who transport and employ the undocumented immigrants, rather than on the immigrants themselves. Now, the real problem to immigration is on a massive scale. There are more than 10 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the United States and that population grows by 700,000/year. One of the reasons why immigrants come to America is because so many of them are attracted to the idea of freedom – plus the pleasant appearance of America. This shows the sign of how dangerously open our boarders are. A lot of times, illegal immigrants come to America mainly for jobs.
“However, they also take away value by weakening the legal and national security environment. When three out of every 100 people in America are undocumented (or, rather, documented with forged and faked papers), there is a profound security problem. Even though they pose no direct security threat, the presence of millions of undocumented migrants distorts the law, distracts resources, and effectively creates a cover for terrorists and criminals.” http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2006/03/the-real-problem-with-immigration-and-the-real-solution
When it comes to the social issue of Child Abuse, things get pretty insane. Child Abuse is a major issue that happens throughout the entire world. Child abuse is
This paper discusses three critical issues in the criminal justice system. It touches on the general issues of punishment philosophies, sentence decision making, and prison overcrowding and focused more specifically on the negative effects of each. Highlighted in this informational paper is the interrelated nature of the issues; each issue affects and is affected by the others. Data and information has been gathered from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Amnesty International, the NAACP Legal Defense
Criminal justice practitioners are necessary for a civilized society. Without those who form boundaries to our freedom, and the ones that reinforce those laws, our community would be chaos. Some of the main social issues our society faces are drug abuse, gang violence, child abuse, and terrorism. The criminal justice practitioners face these types of issues daily. These professionals must act on the morals and laws stated by society rather than their own opinions, sometimes facing hard decisions. The criminal justice field is always active and busy, dealing with countless amount of criminal activity throughout the country.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.
Prison overcrowding has been a problem for many years in the Unites States. With overcrowding being a problem for many years an alternative such
Overcrowding in our state and federal jails today has become a big issue. Back in the 20th century, prison rates in the U.S
America has a major problem with overcrowding in its prisons, and action needs to be taken. Since 1970, the inmate population in the United States has increased over 700%, far greater than the general population as a whole. This has led to declining quality of life within the prison system including 8th Amendment violations and it represents a needless drain on state finances. There is simply no value in keeping non-violent convicts in the prison system, sometimes for years. The costs are high, and there is very little benefit to America. The justice system needs to be overhauled to relieve the massive crowding in US prisons.
One of the greatest challenges currently facing the American criminal justice system is overcrowding. America has the largest prison
Prison Overcrowding: Prisons have become warehouses of human beings as opposed to institutions meant to provide a means to engage in restitution by delinquent individuals in society. “One necessary condition for rising incarceration rates has been the massive expansion in prison construction and capacity, without which prison populations could not have grown so dramatically” (Guetzkow & Schoon, 2015). As more prisons are being built, more delinquents are being incarcerated in order to fill them. “Prison facilities are filled 38 percent beyond rated capacity, with overcrowding being particularly acute in higher-security institutions” (Rowland, 2013).
Throughout the history of the United States, immigration has become a part of our country’s issue which bean centuries ago. The issue of undocumented immigrates has become the primary focus in this year’s election. Undocumented immigrants are foreign born people who lack a right to be in the United States, having either entered without inspection or stayed beyond the expiration date of a visa or other status. Undocumented immigrants are seen as double edged sword. When people move into an area, legally or not, it can also mean that there will be more consumers and potential workers, but it can also mean fewer jobs for locals. Large numbers of immigrants and their families cannot help but have a significant impact on the cultural, political,
Evidence shows that overcrowded prison conditions increase crime in these confines, such as inmates attacking guards. Instances like this happen in these unprincipled institutions daily across the United States, making overcrowded prisons dangerous to
Over 2.4 million people call a state prison, federal prison, or local jail their home ( Prison Overcrowding). Not only are citizens frightened about the over populated prisons, but also the prisoners who have to live there for a period of time. Overcrowded prisons produce an amount of stress and physical problems to the
Overcrowding within the criminal justice system has intrigued me to write about it because of personal family reasons. The problem of overcrowding has been a major problem within the criminal justice system for years. Overcrowding occurs due to harsher punishment for crimes (“Prison overcrowding is a growing concern in the U.S.,” n.d.). More laws are being created that makes certain activities illegal which places more criminals into jails (“Prison overcrowding is a growing concern in the U.S.,” n.d.). Criminals are also relapsing into criminal activity after leaving jail (“Prison overcrowding is a growing concern in the U.S.,” n.d.). Overcrowding in prisons has created extensive problems not only within the prisons but outside the prisons
Today, it’s sad to say an analogy of an overcrowded prison, can be compared to a storage container. The penal system needs to refocus, and remember that a prison is not a way station, but a facility where incarcerated individuals serve time for a crime committed. We will identify and discuss the main reasons that prisons are overcrowded; procedures that are used to control the overcrowding; and why or why not can issues of overcrowding be fixed.
Today, in America, some prisoners are living worse than some third world countries are for little crimes such as thief. Overcrowded prisons can literally be defined as placing more prisoners in a prison facility than the prison was built to maintain. Every prison has a recommended capacity for which they are to hold prisoners, since there is such an increase in offenders going to prison, these capacities are being ignored and the population of these prisons are significantly increased, making them overcrowded. Too many prisoners and not enough room. This country needs to spend more money to build new prisons. New prisons cost too much to build. There are more prisoners than the guards can control safely. Because of overcrowding some state prisons are sends their inmates down to local prisons. Some prison inmates are sleeping in hallways, storage rooms and even lavatories. Due to overcrowding some prisons are producing conditions so unhealthy it is against the constitution. Because the new prisons won’t be built for a while some prisons are doing the only thing they can, freeing inmates early. Another reason for overcrowding is that more people are going to jail for smaller, less offensive crimes. Because the number of people in prison, the educational programs are limited. Before the inmate was placed near his or her program but now they are placed where ever there is a bed. Some prisons are placing inmate wherever there can. Some prisoners need special education that is not
Prison Overcrowding has become a major issue in the United States. Many laws such as the three strikes law and also mandatory minimums have played a major part in prison overcrowding in the United States. The violence that is caused by prison
