The scientific experiment is the cornerstone of modern science and technology. Many of our advancements, like the lightbulb and the widespread use of electricity, owe credit to a properly set up experiment. Successfully setting up a valid experiment requires three main parts, but must also have an emphasis on safety. These parts include a properly set up control group, an independent variable in which you control the experiment, a dependent variable that is your effect being measured, and have all the necessary safety equipment required. The first thing that a budding scientist must do is set up the control group. A control group is the standard group in the experiment, and because of this it must be free from all outside factors and influence. Keeping the control group isolated and without influence makes sure that the group is reliable and valid. Having a reliable control group is important because you use this group as the “norm” in which you …show more content…
An independent variable is a component of the experiment that you, the experimenter, have control over and manipulate. For example, if I was to try to create an experiment that shows how much different amounts of a painkiller reduced the pain felt by the patient during small procedures in the hospital, the amount of this drug given to each patient would be the independent variable of that experiment. Then, as a result of manipulating the independent variable, the dependent variable comes into the experiment, in the form of results. The dependent variable is the measurable results that occur after the independent variable is applied to a group. In the experiment involving the painkillers and their varying effects on patients, the dependent variable would be how much pain each patient felt during their operation. It is important to have a dependent variable because the entire experiment is based upon the results acquired from this
Describe what you understand by ‘independent variable’ and ‘dependent variable’ in a scientific study? ( 5 points) An independent variable is something you have control over, what you can choose and manipulate. It is a variable that stands alone and doesn’t change by other variables. Although in some cases, you may not be able to manipulate the independent variable. It could be already there and or fixed. A dependent variable is the variable that’s being tested in an experiment. If the experimenter changes the independent variable, the change in the dependent variable is observed and recorded. For example a scientist is testing the effect of light and dark on the behavior of moths by turning a light on and off. The independent variable is the amount of light and the moth’s reaction is dependent variable. A change in the independent variable (amount of light) directly causes a change in the dependent variable (moth
In laboratory experiments all variables are under the control of the researcher, the researcher will obtain their results from taking two groups which are identical. One group will be the control group and the other will be the experimental group. The researcher will then alter the independent variable in the experimental group to see if the variable that the researcher is investigating changes in any way when compared to the control group. If there is
There are several parts to the experiment such as both the independent and dependent variables. The independent variable is controlled or changed during the experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable. The dependent variable is tested and measured during the test .A controlled variable is an example for an independent variable would be variable that is held constant throughout the experiment. An example is a theory that could extend a person’s life expectancy. The independent variable is the amount of vitamin given to the subject within the experiment. The dependent variable is the life span
Lab procedures must be communicated in a lab to ensure that the lab is a safe place to perform experiments. Using good judgment, observe safety rules and follow directions can prevent accidents form happening. Experiments should include comments to alert people
Each laboratory experiment must be read and carefully studied before coming to the laboratory. This must be done to ensure that each student is thoroughly familiar with the principles, procedures, calculations, and anything else with the exercises may be involved.
Independent: The independent variable in the following experiment is the temperature as it is what is being changed and will impact the overall outcome of the experiment.
Dependent variables are ones that change due to the independent variable. Independent variables are variables that can be manipulated or measured. This influences the dependent variables.
This factor was the independent variable; it was controlled by you, the experimenter. The other variable was a consequence of changes you made. This is the dependent variable. It was a consequence of changes in the independent variable.
Prior to conducting the experiment, the members of the group planned how the practical would be conducted, what variables they were going to measure, and delegated roles evenly between the members. For example, one member was assigned the roles of diluting the Catalase concentration, whilst the other member was responsible for measuring out 50ml of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Communication was also vital to ensure that the students knew exactly how the experiment would be conducted. Furthermore, the ideas of each member in the group were valued and taken into consideration with regards to how the investigation should be conducted. As the practical was conducted in a tight space, the students were required to communicate effectively with others to prevent any collision. In addition, cooperation was compulsory, as students were required to share the materials and equipment. All these skills were vital in order for the experiment to be conducted efficiently and coherently within the time
My dependent variable here is not a number, it is data recorded I will measure the dependent variable by observing from my experiment Controlled Variable: My controlled Variables are the equipment provided to do this project I am certain that this is controlled because it was provided same for everyone Safety 1. Wear safety goggles at ALL times while in the classroom 2. Wear gloves when handling ALL chemicals 3. Tie back hair and loose clothing 4.
The independent variable is an exposure to active decision-making based on calculations of material commitment to providing and withholding blood; however, age, sex, and racial or ethnic characteristics are subject variables that cannot be controlled no matter what.
The research question, in this case, is “Are subjects less accurate in their hypnotic response reporting under more anonymous conditions” (Younger et al., 2005). Independent variables are the variables that stand alone, and it is not changed by the other variables one is measuring. On the other hand, dependent variable refers to the variable that changes because of variations in the independent variable. Therefore, the independent variable is less accurate subjects and anonymous conditions while the dependent variable is the hypotonic response reporting.
There also will be an agreement where if the subject feels uncomfortable with the experiment he or she is free to stop and leave. If I was to conduct this experiment then my hypothesis would be if that a person can read 15 cards straight in a row consecutively then the person ESP abilities. If the person cannot then he or she does not have ESP abilities. In this experiment the cards would be the independent variable and the dependent variable will be the person's ability to read the cards. An independent variable is the variable that is change or controls in a scientific experiment in order to see the effects of being tested for the dependent variable; which, the dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured inside experiment. In order to make this experiment more experimental than correlational research, scientists would isolate and manipulate only the independent variable and observe its effect on the dependent variable in order to establish a cause and
* The Independent part is what you, the experimenter, changes or enacts in order to do your experiment. The dependent variable is what changes when the independent variable changes - the dependent variable depends on the outcome of the independent variable.
A controlled group is one of the best ways to gather all needed information for the objectivity of the test. The experimental group is controlled by who is chosen to conduct the test, where the test will be conducted, how the test will be conducted (controlled environment), and a period of time (how long will be given) to complete the test. Both of the controlled groups will have the same number 2 pencils, comfortable room, and temperature of the room will be the same between both groups. Keeping both group A and group B exactly the same in every aspect during the test will determine the accuracy of the
