Remember the Titans is directed by Boaz Yakin and stars Denzel Washington as Coach Herman Boone, Will Patton as Bill Yoast, Ryan Hurst as Gerry Bertier, and Wood Harris as Julius Campbell. The movie takes place in 1971, at T.C Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The high school had recently integrated, where both Americans and African Americans conjoin to the same school. The main social issue in the movie was racism, because the Americans didn’t want to be a part of the same school as the African Americans, but they play on the same football team. They also didn’t want to be coached by Herman Boone, because he was a different race from them and Coach Yoast coached most of the white players. Remember the Titans teaches us we can put our differences aside and work together as a team to achieve a goal.

In the movie Remember the Titans Coach Boone gives a speech on the battle ground of Gettysburg. Coach Boone was hired and made head coach over the nominated Hall of Fame Coach Yoast. Racial tensions were building between team members because their school, T.C. Williams became integrated. His team of football players had a problem with open prejudice and hostility between the black and white players. After a day of bad practice, Coach Boone took his team out for a run in the middle of the night through the forest to deal with the issue. Remember The Titans was a movie that was set in a very hostile time in our country. We were in the middle of what I like to call a civil war. Although there were no battles or gunfights our country was torn in half. There was an issue dealing with race in the United States. The movie, Remember the Titans is based on actual events that occurred in the year 1971. Mainly on the integration of a school called TC Williams High School. When the school was integrated the old football coach, Coach Yoast, was let go and a black coach Herman Boone was hired on. The main plot of this movie is regarding the coaching change in the school and the 1971 football season the TC Williams Titans have.

In the movie Remember the Titans, the plot shows clear examples of race and ethnicity discrimination and Sexual orientation discrimination. One of the first scenes that show the issue of race and ethnicity discrimination is when the coach (Coach Boon) house is being vandalized by the “white players” when they throw rocks at his house. It is evident that the players don’t want the Coach or his Family in the neighborhood due to the colour of their skin. Another example is When Julius walks into the room and is completely ignored by a group of White girls when he says Hi to them, the nature of the movie suggests that if Julius has been of Lighter Skin, the girls would have reacted differently to him by saying Hi back. An example of Sexual Orientation discrimination in the movie is when they refer to a male player as Sunshine as he is homosexual, it is even more evident in the scene where the group of football players are uncomfortable around the character Ronnie as he is homosexual. The behaviours shown in the movie are learnt behaviours, the discrimination shown in the movie shows that white characters are acting on their judgment against the black characters with no substance behind their behaviours, and no real reason for them to be acting that way. The social construction of race is a topic that is worth discussing. In the United States the black/white color line has historically been rigidly defined and enforced. People have been stereotypical and afraid as long as I can remember. Labeling people as we think they should be based on the color of their skin or just thinking it’s in their biology so they must be this or they must be that. Race is socially constructed and is not a biological construct.

Remember The Titans is a great football movie, and an even better civil rights movie. The movie shows how TC Williams handled desegregation and how the football team brought the community together. When the white players and black players came together for the first time, they did not get along. Coach Herman Boone took the team to a camp, and the players started to get along. When the players went back to school, they experienced the racism all over again. Eventually, the team helped the school and community get over the desegregation.

Remember the Titans is a classic football movie filled with many obstacles. These obstacles vary from racism to dealing with death. It’s based on a true story that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. What makes this movie classic is how the players and coaches were able to overcome the issue of segregation and build relationships to form a championship team.

Remember the Titans was made to show you what it was like to be white and be black in an integrated school for the first time. There were many hardships but the power of having equality, common goals and supportive authority gave the players and coaches the push they needed to become the team they were. Racial harmony is not as easy as a Disney made movie makes it seem but showing the growing populace even today that it is possible gives what we are fighting for even today more

This film talks about how they overcome the racism and how each individual person on the team become one as team. As David Blight says in his novel, Race and Reunion, after the Civil War and emancipation, Americans were faced with the overwhelming task of trying to understand the relationship between “two profound ideas—healing and justice.” While he admits that both had to occur on some level, healing from the war was not the same “proposition” for many whites, especially veterans, as doing justice for the millions of emancipated slaves and their descendants (Blight 3). Blight claims that African Americans did not want an apology for slavery, but instead a helping hand. Thus, after the Civil War, two visions of Civil War memory arose and combined: the reconciliationist vison, which focused on the issue of dealing with the dead from the battlefields, hospitals, and prisons, and the emancipationist vision, which focused on African Americans’ remembrance of their own freedom and in conceptions of the war as the “liberation of [African Americans] to citizenship and Constitutional equality” (Blight 2).

Most people don’t realize that the media play up the stereotypes and gender roles that are out there. We don’t realize that the movies and television shows we watch feed into the stereotypes and gender roles that we believe in. Boone coming to T.C. Williams High School really upset many parents and students. When the parents of the football players found out he was going to be helping the head coach, Bill Yoast, many were fuming with anger. Why? Because he is African-American. Parents did not want their children playing African-American children in sports or sitting next to them in classrooms. This movie is based on a true story and the film challenges everything we claim we know about discrimination and racism in school.

When the school board decides to integrate both schools the white community doesn’t take it to well and a Young African youth is slain which causes uproar in the city. The uniting of both schools goes on and we as audience can see the hostility shown towards both races. It’s not until the football team and leaders unite do we start seeing a change in the community. The respect for an individual isn’t based upon his color but his soul. The uniting of a team brings a community bound by racism and hatred together for the greater good.
