It is evident in almost every high school, students don’t seem to appreciate the piles of homework their teachers’ assign. Students don’t seem to have the time nor the willpower to do homework sometimes, due to their busy schedules or motivation for school. Majority of students, I’ve spoken to have said homework not only wastes time but also takes away from the excitement of learning. Clearly, in most schools, homework isn’t the most popular choice for students. Sometimes teachers assign a couple of pages of homework but then tag along a project and a presentation into the mix, leaving us young adults procrastinating to perfect everything before the due date, usually being the next day. Homework is an unnecessary chore which stresses teenagers out by taking time out of their day, which could be used for more effective manners for preparing for tests and developing their minds. Students work from 8:30 in the morning to 2:50 in the afternoon, sometimes even later with frequent breaks in between. When a student arrives home they are faced with a decision to either relax and release the tension from their body from a long day at school or do homework. A student has just come back home from an exhausting six hours at school, packed with learning and they are expected to be overloaded with more. Being a student who has received homework for various years, I have found that homework causes me a lot of stress (Ethos). Homework causes kids to get very stressed out, it causes stress in their families, and studies show that it does not improve test scores. Harris Cooper, a worker at Duke University (Ethos), found out that, doing more than 60 to 90 minute of homework in middle school and more than 2 hours in high school is associated with much lower scores (Logos). Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. Parents and students across the country are beginning to spot the flaws in these homework methods, however, claiming that academics are merely being memorized instead of thoroughly taught. When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Students in high school get anywhere from 1 hour a night to 4+ hours a night of homework adding even an extra 30 minutes for that one class can stop students from wanting to learn. After a long day at school and a meeting for a club you go home and immediately get started on all of that day’s work, and after a while you get the feeling of being “burnt out.” This can stop a child or teenager from wanting to learn in the end, may even make the student hate the subject itself, and if students are given too much homework it can make them have anxiety and horrible stress.

From personal experience, I found myself drowning in homework in high school. Every night would consist of coming home after practice, and working for an average of four hours on assignments. At the end of high school, I realized I was just doing homework to get it out of the way, and it wasn’t helping me grow academically. I know that thousands of students feel the same way, and it is a true flaw in our education system. Although homework has helped students grow academically, ultimately the effects of too much homework have brought unhealthy amounts of stress, inability for students to explore their interests, and a reduced social skills.
Time is limited, and homework consumes the majority of it for students. Students may take hours before they finish their homework; as a result, students lose hours of sleep causing them unable to focus in class the next day. The circle then continues, students stay up late doing homework because of how much there is, or the exercises are hard to comprehend, lose focus in class and the cycle repeats.
