Civics and Citizenship - Participation in Government Smoking Petition
Smoking should be banned in Australia. Smoking is a disgusting habit that many Australians use every single day. The impact of banning smoking altogether in Australia would be a massive favour for everyone. Australian adults who smoke everyday and Australian Secondary Students from the age 12 to 17 smoke over 22 billion cigarettes per year and effecting other people to start smoking because they think it’s a cool way to get attention. But I think that banning it in almost all public places is a great idea but I raise this question to you, “Why not just Ban Smoking?” This question was raised in a ‘The Age’ article in 2013. The main point of the article is, smoking is banned in pretty much all public places and there are often neighbours writing to the council complaining about a smoking neighbour, so why not just ban it altogether?
The ban would create many positive outcomes for example, The Health Factor for the public and including the environment. Smoking does really bad damage to everything, it’s a known fact to everyone. It affects everyone whether they’re a smoker or not, they can suffer just as much as the smoker. Some of the health effects of smoking are Cancer, Lung diseases, Heart disease, Poor blood circulation and unfortunately much more. All of Australia would be better off without smoking, if would help our children grow up properly without having to worry about cancer, or have simple life
One of the largest and most problematic health issues in our society is smoking. Smoking is currently the leading cause of death in our country, due to its harmful and addicting contents, such as nicotine and tobacco. Although millions die from it each year, smoking is the single most preventable cause of death as well. Without smoking, a tremendous amount of money and lives will be saved. I think that our country should ban smoking and the production of cigarettes in order to maintain a healthier nation, help save the environment, and prevent the almost 1000 deaths that they cause in fires each year.
Smoking cigarettes causes more deaths than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm- related incidents combined. Some people say that banning cigarettes would be bad because the government makes a lot of money from the tax revenues. Or that it would increase illegal trade. But based off of the fact that millions of people die each year, cigarettes should be banned because it causes many health issues, it affects a lot of people, and it costs the government a lot of money.
If somebody is smoking they can get many different types of diseases and cancers. It is proven that somebody who smokes is 15 to 30 percent more likely to get lung cancer. That is a crazy amount more than a person not smoking. Tobacco itself also has around 7,000 chemicals. That many chemicals are not very good for your body. Around 70 are known to cause cancer in humans and animals (CDC). Ammonia(used to treat waste water), Arsenic(rat poison), Acetone(nail polish remover), Cadmium(batteries), Nickel (Smoker News World) are only a few of the dangerous chemicals in tobacco. If that does not scare you away from smoking I don't know what will. All of those chemicals listed are extremely poisonous. In our culture it is unethical to have somebody kill themselves. But this is still happening right under our noses, literally. Thousands of people die because of smoking. So why don't why just ban smoking and stop these people from killing
Smoking laws in Queensland are extensive and most have been in effect since 1 July 2006. Smoking is not allowed in all enclosed public places . It is permitted in residential spaces, along with specific outdoor public spaces such as beaches, children's playgrounds , sport stadiums and at outdoor eating and drinking venues. It is also allowable within 4 metres of public (i.e. non-residential) building entrances. In 2010 it became illegal to smoke in a car when a child under the age of 16 is present. In 2011 Brisbane City Council banned smoking in the CBD shopping strip Queen Street Mall.
The federal government should pass a nationwide smoking ban from all indoor facilities. There are many controversial statements out there, but indoor smoking should not be one of them. There are many lives being affected by people smoking in public facilities. As this puts others at risk for severe health problems.
Smoking should not be allowed. 40 million adults smoke in the United States currently! 480,000 people die each year in the United States from smoking and 42,000 die from secondhand smoking. (Smoking should be banned because it gives you many cancers, affects four of your five senses, and affects your heart, brain, and stomach.)
Around 80,000 to 100,000 children worldwide start smoking every day, and almost half of those children live in Asia. It's estimated that nearly 4.5 million United States youth are smokers, and if this current pattern persists, about 6.4 tobacco-using children will die prematurely from a smoking-related disease. From those 80,000 to 100,000 children about 50% of them will continue smoking for another decade or two. These kids help make up the 90% of smokers that started before age 21. The youth that has and will start smoking will have a harder time quitting, just as long-time smokers.
There is many reasons why you shouldn’t smoke and why it should be outlawed. Now I am going to explain to you the mental aspect of smoking and the damage that smoking can make a person endor if or while they smoke. One way smoking can affect someone's mental health is by making you always have urges to go out and smoke or to leave whatever event you're at to go smoke and if you can't smoke you start to have withdraws which ties into physical health of smoking.”If you have a mental health problem, you probably smoke more than other people so your smoking is even more likely to harm you. You are more likely to be one of the 100,000 people in the UK each year who are killed by smoking. You are more likely to die early. You will, on average, die about 10 years earlier than you would have done if you had not smoked. But - half of smokers die 15 years earlier than they should while a quarter die 23 years earlier.”(Dr Ken Checinski and Dr Jonathan Campion)” . Smoking is the second largest killer of people with mental health issues. Some of the chemicals in cigarettes have been known to help trigger mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. According to Dr. James MacCabe “They found that 57% of people treated for a first episode of psychosis were smokers. Psychotic patients were three times more likely to consume tobacco than individuals without severe mental illness.” (Dr. James MacCabe). Professor Sir Robin Murray, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College, said: “Excess dopamine is the best biological explanation we have for psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia. It is possible that nicotine exposure, by increasing the release of dopamine, causes psychosis to develop.” (Sir Robin Murray). Excessive smoking can lead to the drug dopamine not being produced in certain parts of the brain due to the chemicals in the cigarettes. Those are some ways smoking can
In conclusion, smoking should be banned because it is killing people everyday. Smokers die about 10 years earlier than non-smokers on average. 10 years are taken from them by cigarettes. So to anyone who smokes, quit smoking, do everything possible to get rid of the habit that can take over someone's life. Non-smokers write letters, sign petitions and stay away from smoking, this can be
Do you smell that? That foul scent mixed into the air. It’s killing you slowly inside, each time you take a breath of this putrid, polluted, dirty scent. You smell it too, the trillions of chemicals racing into your lungs. Now look around yourself, and you’ll see someone smoking on the bench beside you. Smoking is the number one avoidable causes of death. Therefore, smoking should be banned from all public areas. The ban from smoking in public will help to reduce the smokers intake of cigarettes/chemicals, cigarettes themselves are a danger to the earth, some may argue that this ban may damage the economy, and that smoking does not only effect the smoker himself/herself, it effects everyone around them, in many various
Smoking is the leading cause of over 480,000 deaths each year in the United States alone. This makes smoking the second leading cause of death in the United States. Smoking is a serious issue that has been limited throughout time, but these limitations are not enough. Smoking needs to be eliminated, it needs to be illegal. Smoking causes many complications for your health, the environment, and others.
Among the many reasons why cigarette smoking should be banned, health concerns, mortality rates, and high cost are of the utmost importance. Cigarettes are an extremely addictive and dangerous phenomenon that occurred suddenly. Cigarettes are known to decrease the lifespan in people who smoke them. In recent years, researchers have found that cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and all over the world. Cigarettes include toxic materials such as ammonia, formaldehyde, and much more ingredients that most people should be educated on. Most people, including teens, start smoking so they will feel socially accepted. This bad habit often leads to years of addiction where people will feel lost without them. Cigarettes have made a negative impact on society and continue to do so over the years.
There are over 5.5 trillion cigarettes produced globally each year, and over 1.1 billion people worldwide use cigarettes each day, primarily as an activity to relax, which is over one-sixth of the world’s population. Due to the over four-thousand chemicals found in cigarette smoke, including 43 known carcinogenic compounds, smokers are much more likely than non-smokers to develop terminal illnesses such as lung cancer, COPD, heart disease, stroke, and is the cause of more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States alone; nearly one in five deaths. Additionally, the inhalation of second-hand by non-smokers is equally as harmful as smoking a cigarette itself; and what is worse, non-smokers do not always get to decide to inhale or not. Cigarette smoking is a terrible habit which contributes to many negative health consequences, and eventually, an untimely death.
Should smoking bans be a law in every public place worldwide? Would you like to go out to eat with a friend and have the person right at another table smoke near you? I think not, I wouldn’t like it at all. They’re not only harming themselves, but everyone nearby. How much knowledge does this person have on the smoke they are inhaling? Everyone is at risk, adults, children, and even pets. Second-hand smoke can be prevented. Why allow this to happen in our world, if you want to smoke do it on your own time away from others who do not wish to inhale your smoke.
Bob Marley once said, “Tobacco is known to have been the cause of many medical deaths, while organic marijuana has not been cause of any leading deaths.” There has been known to be one thousand deaths a day caused by cigarettes, while marijuana has not been the death towards anyone. The after effects of smoking cigarettes is worse than smoking marijuana over a long period of time because of health effects, psychological effects, and social effects.
