The United States has about 88 guns per 100 people, or 275,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more, but that isn’t bad considering over 300,000 people use weapons in self-defense. (ProCon.org) Gun laws go back to 1791 when the second amendment was created. Gun control laws do not deter crime; gun ownership deters crime. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution reads, "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." If you take guns away from the people who get them legally how will they defend themselves from those who get them illegally and can continue getting guns even after laws are made? Massachusetts is the strictest state for gun laws and they still proceed to ban gun attachments and AR-15’S the things that are never used for crime in places like Mass. Next, citizens say guns are rarely used in self-defense, “Of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.79% of victims (235,700) protected themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm,” . Although guns are used for self-defense 2.5 million times a year. The police cannot protect everyone all of the time. NRA Stated “61% of men and 56% of women surveyed by Pew Research said that stricter gun laws would make it more difficult for people to protect their homes and families.” Then, gun control laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns or breaking laws, it will just stop the people in the right. It’s simple that the world we live in is filled with chaos but we need to fight fire with fire. Guns don't kill people; people kill people. And people need more gun education and mental illness screening to prevent massacres. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute, Inc. (SAAMI), stated, "Whether in the field, at the range or in the home, a responsible and knowledgeable gun owner is rarely involved in a firearms accident of any kind." ProCon.org states the importance of gun ownership in their pro column of the article, “Although, armed civilians are unlikely to stop crimes and are more likely to make dangerous situations, including mass
Gun control is a vital necessity to the welfare of our nation. Many people out there are supporting the “anti- gun control cause” with the excuse of “self-defense”. I believe that not everyone will handle a gun for self-defense. The possession of a gun is a sign of power. One of the bigger ambitions that one has is to have power and the easier it is to obtain a gun; the faster a criminal will gain power over an innocent person. When one is in possession of a gun, that person has complete control of their actions and may act upon the weapon however the person may please even if they know that their action will cause harm to defense-less people. There are many deaths caused by guns out there that could
As the population increases its stocks on firearms, a significant number of citizens are at risk of being harmed. According to statistics, “In 2000, almost 30,000 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States more than the number of deaths from, alcohol abuse, or drug abuse… [in spite of] almost 20,000 laws and regulations regulating gun usage to some degree” (Kwon and Baack). Though several individuals are in fear of losing guns as weapons for protection, a greater number of laws will continue to be useful in maintaining the security of citizens upon significant new laws addressing gun control. Although the existence of guns is necessary to protect bear arms, gun control laws help reduce violence, decrease the homicide rate, and help prevent accidents from around the globe. New gun control laws should be enforced to ensure the safety of the entire population, and most importantly to prevent any gun violence as necessary to help save the lives of the innocent.
People feel more protected when they carry a concealed handgun than no handgun at all (procon.org).
Regardless of how strict gun laws are, criminals are always going to be able to obtain guns. The 2nd amendment states that an individual has the right to bear arms and government leaders should not have ability to limit this right. Gun control has been a big issue in America today, especially after tragic events like the Sandy Hook School shooting. In response to this shooting many government leaders have been attempting to put a stop to gun use; however, this would interfere with an individual's’ constitutional rights. Although many of these tragedies, including the Sandy Hook incident, should not be ignored, all people should be guaranteed the second amendment. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”(The NRA’s Simplistic Response 2). This was added to our Constitution because the founders believed that private ownership of guns was necessary for protection of our liberties. The Second Amendment also guarantees the individual right of every
“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The right of all Americans to bear arms is a right the Founding Fathers held to equal importance as the Constitution itself. Gun control laws directly violate this right and therefore should not even be under consideration. Even if that issue is overlooked, gun control advocates state that in order to reduce firearm related violence, gun control laws must be implemented to remove the violence caused by firearms. Although this may seem reasonable, the consequences of such laws are ironically counterproductive; they exacerbate the problem instead of fixing it. Besides the fact that the American
Imagine yourself walking home late at night from a friends house. It is very dark and hard to keep track of your surroundings. suddenly you hear footsteps quickly approaching you from behind. when you turn around you see a masked man with a knife. You have only 5 seconds to act, what do you do.
Americans should think twice before accepting gun control. Some restrictions on gun ownership help regulate the individuals that possess firearms, but other restrictions are a violation of the second amendment and therefore our basic rights as United States citizens. Firearms help individuals protect themselves and their families both on and off their property. Enacting gun control would only be ignoring the problem and saddling the burden on law-abiding gun owners. In the wake of violent crimes, such as mass shootings, the outcry should be against the perpetrator and the actions that led them to their decision, not the gun, or rather tool that was used.
Gun owners tend to be white, male, conservative and live in rural areas (Jervis, 2016). Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that on an average day, 93 Americans are killed with guns.
According to the Second Amendment, citizens of the United States have the right to bear arms while protecting ourselves. Gun control is set into place to retain firearms from the hands of the ‘good guys’. In most cases, it is highly plausible for a bad guy to reach hands on a weapon, whether it be from black market, cross borders, or illegal street sales. These men won’t be stopped by just any gun laws. As the saying goes: where there’s a will, there’s a way. Gun control is a social injustice because there are not enough laws to protect citizens against absurd, illogical gun use, and The Gun Control Act of 1968 works to address this issue by
Everyone should have the right to have a gun in their homes for protection! Because obviously we have them to use it in order to attack someone. Now Democratic Party wants every gun in the state property registered and they want everyone to take a “Mental Health” test before they get a gun. Witch I totally agree with, because you never know what type of a person they’re. We should also watch their backgrounds.
Consequently, U.S. Congress passed its first law restricting guns in 1927. The Mailing of Firearms Act outlawed the shipping of concealable handguns by U.S. mail. ( Doeden pg. 22-23) The laws’ purpose was just as it sounds, which was to slow mail-order gun sales to members of organized crime groups. It was a small and mostly ineffective and criminals easily avoided this law. But, It marked the beginning of a new era of gun-control efforts. There has always been the need for laws for gun control, but when they’re
Banning and keeping guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens has more drawbacks and is not supported by police. Eliminating or restricting guns used for self-defense does not make American citizens safer. As of 2016, one in 23 Americans is at risk of being murdered in some form, not just murdered with a gun. When debating guns, it should be acknowledged that guns, in the hands of qualified, trained individuals, prevent crimes and improve public safety. The vast majority of law enforcement believes legally armed citizens are critical in reducing crime. A national survey of current and retired law enforcement officials has showed that most officers do not believe gun control would work and having more trained, armed citizens would be more beneficial at reducing and preventing crime. Gun bans create more helplessness by disarming citizens who are legally carrying a gun. According to the Government Accountability Office, the number of Concealed Carry Permits has surged to roughly eight million, and the amount of gun related violence has gone down during that same period. “ Concealed carry permit holders commit crimes at a lower rate than the rest of the general US population” (Winkler 35). “ People who seek to obtain permits are likely to
Based on production data from firearm manufacturers, there are roughly 300 million firearms owned by civilians in the United States as of 2010. Of these, about 100 million are handguns. The statistics show the nearly every one in the United States owns a gun. In this case, the ratio from people to gun is very close. The government could never take away guns from American people. If they every tried to out law guns there would be an outrage. On a daily basis we have to face crime and protect ourselves because we never know what is around the next corner and people feel more safe when they have a firearm. Knowing that if something bad did happen they would have a fighting chance. Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in theJournal of Quantitative Criminology, U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year. Many people own firearms to protect themselves from dangers in the world. People feel safe knowing that they can protect themselves and criminals are more cautious knowing they may cary a gun. Guns have shaped the United States into the county we are today, although they have caused trouble, guns are a part of our lives. They provide protection to
In fact, many gun owners don’t even have the intention to use their firearms for self defense. In a recent nationwide survey of 1012 American gun owners, 66% said they owned a gun for the purpose of recreational target shooting, and 58% for the purpose of hunting. Some may argue however, that these people are still a danger to others as well as themselves. Unfortunately, accidents do happen. In 2007, there were 613 fatal firearm accidents and 5,045 non-fatal accidents resulting in a hospitalization. However, these numbers only account for a miniscule number of the total amount of total accidents, firearms accounting for only .5% of fatal accidents in 2007, and .4% of all non-fatal hospitalizations. These numbers can be attributed to the rigorous and thorough gun-safety courses that many states require in order to receive licences for firearms.
By enacting gun control, such as mandatory safety features, would reduce the number of accidental gun shooting. Most of the accidental shooting mainly occurs twenty-five years old. According to the Injury Mortality Reports, “in 2000s, five to two-thousands ten, almost four thousand people in the United States died from unintentional shooting
