In the 1790s members of the industry in both Paris and London were working on inventions to try to mechanise paper-making. In England John Dickenson produced the cylinder machine that was operational by 1809. Although useful for smaller enterprises, this lacked the large scale potential of the machine resulting from the invention of Nicholas-Louis Robert in Paris, which had a more complicated incubation period. The last of the early improvements to this machine were financed by the Fourdrinier brothers in London, and it was after these brothers that the machine was named. However, the problem of a shortage of paper-making materials remained pressing. The 18th century saw much experimentation with plant materials, both in Britain and on the Continent.(16) Even a few unlikely non-plant substances such as asbestos were tried. Observations of wasps’ nests also raised some early interest in the possibility of wood as a potential paper-making material. By about 1716 jute(17) was beginning to be used, mainly in the form of the coarse textile sacking that was commonly made from this Asian plant. Cotton(18) rags - previously few and far between, so very seldom used - became common after the 1790s. This came about as a result of the invention of the cotton-gin in America which speeded up production, and of the spinning-jenny that made Britain a producer rather than an importer of cotton fabric. Cotton waste from the mills also became a major new source. Straw,(19) the leaves and stems of cereal grasses such as rye, barley, wheat or rice, which had always been used in small quantities, became much more extensively utilised from the 1840s. The use of recycled paper also became, like straw, used much more widely. The industrial revolution was a time of great change in Europe. Many of those changes were brought about by mechanical inventions that greatly increased efficiency by which raw materials were processed. "While working in the sciences and tinkering with mechanics, a few people were able to come up with new ways of doing things. New machines were invented" (MacroHistory and World Report) Three significant machines that were invented during this time period that greatly increased the cotton industry were the cotton gin, the spinning jenny, and the power loom. Since cotton was one of the major cash crops exported by the colonies to England, it is important to understand these inventions in order to grasp the changes brought about by this trio of machines on the cotton industry.
In addition to the plentiful raw materials that England supplied, Britain had an expanding economy to support their industrialization. With the help of Britain's stable government and new investors, factories were able to quickly adapt to newly purchased machinery. The Industrial Revolution was further spurred by a resolution of new technology. These new inventions and expansion of factories led to a rapid increase in wealth of the overall nation. Which led the decrease in prices to come from the introduction of machines. For example, the creation of the well known cotton gin, by Eli Whitney helped revolutionized the production of cotton. Before, the cotton process took a long period of time and extensive work to produce a widely traded product. Whitney’s new tecnhioldingal invention was able to show tremendous growth in efficiency. This machine helped by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber. By the mid-19th century, cotton had became America’s leading export. In other words, this machine was designed to spin and weave the fabric, which helped to expand the Industrial Revolution’s productivity. When it comes to medicine and the human body, everyone is different. We react to medications differently, to disease processes differently and especially to pain. Giving birth is one of the most natural events to occur in a woman’s life but every woman’s experience is different and so is their pain. Some are able to go through hours of labor and push for twenty minutes with pain levels they believe to be minimal. Others are unable to deal with the pain and often times anxiety that the pain can bring. Luckily for these women, medicine has evolved and the option for significant pain relief is available. The question raised when providing this option is, are there negative effects of receiving an epidural too early or late in the process.

Also, the cottage industry of England was not able to fulfill the demands of increasing population. In 1765 cotton spinning jenny was invented by a carpenter named James Hargreaves. At the same time, Richard Arkwright invented the water frame in 1768. These two inventions triggered the production of the cottage industry and cotton became cheaper and affordable to all classes. The real breakthrough comes when James watt invented steam engine in 1776 which made possible the establishment of coal and iron factories to more suitable areas. Initially, steam engines were used for pumping water out of coal mines and in iron industry to create draft in blast furnaces. Be the 1750's, the Industrial Revolution had begun. In the beginning, inventions were limited to cotton weaving. This quickly changed with new inventions such as the spinning jenny and the water powered frame. A problem existed in which yarn was not being fed fast enough to the weaver, but in 1769 the spinning jenny and the water powered frame solved this problem by providing yarn faster. Edmund Cartwright, in 1880, invented the power loom, and it combined both the machine's characteristics and purposes in one machine. Cleaning cotton was always an extremely difficult and time consuming job. In 1793, Eli Whitney created a brilliant invention, the cotton gin.
