A true epic hero has many very defining characteristics. Usually you will find this hero to be the alpha male. ' With an almost super hero personality, epic heroes are extremely above an average human being. This character must be of noble birth, and as a result, this gives them great respect and many resources. There is a deep reverence for the gods and this helps the hero through tough times. An epic hero is bravery than the other characters. They are willing to take bigger risks and reap greater rewards. Despite these strong traits, there is usually an element of deep suffering that the character must deal with through out his story. They sent Hermes, the messenger god to convince Calypso to let Odysseus get back to his wife and son. His problems were not over yet once he left the island, however, because he had made Zeus an enemy. Zeus sent a terrible storm to rip apart Odysseus 's raft with the intentions that he be lost at sea forever. Gods saved him from this fate, though, when Ino and Athena give him a veil to keep him from drowning and changing the wind to make sure the waves carried Odysseus home. It was very important that Odysseus was so reverent towards the gods; otherwise he never would have made it home from the Trojan War. Odysseus was very brave, almost to the point of throwing away his men 's lives to take a risk. While Odysseus was on the island of the Cyclopes, he explored more than most men would have when he walked into the cave of Polyphemus. He did find lots of cheese and milk, but the result of this was death for some of his men when Polyphemus returned and found them there. Throughout the story, Odysseus 's goal was to return home to Ithaca and spend the rest of his life with his son, Telemachos, and his wife Penelope. Calypso loves Odysseus because of his looks and his wisdom, and so do the other women on her island, especially since they have never seen a man before. Penelope, while she probably a little worried that Odysseus wasn’t coming back, she didn’t know how little progress he was making. Odysseus was constantly making progress towards getting home, then something else would push him back to square one. He was extremely close to reaching Ithaca, then Poseidon decided it wasn’t his fate to return at that moment. Even when he was trapped on Calypso’s island. He had his boat fall into Charybdis, the monster living in the whirlpool. Odyssey then was forced to hold onto debris of his ship as he was whisked away wherever the ocean took him. He then stumbled upon Calypso's island, was trapped for many years, and could not leave. Another emotional burden he had on him, was that when they were travelling through the Strait that occupied Scylla, Odysseus knew that 7 of his men would have to sacrifice. Odysseus was lost at sea coming across lands that is unknown and may be dangerous. After 20 years he finally makes it back home safely, in the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer. In The Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell it shows what skills or events the stories must meet to be required an hero’s journey. In the poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus, the main character, travels away from his home and finds himself in a situation that prevents him from going back for a long period of time. During the times of trouble, Odysseus reveals characteristics about himself that might otherwise have been hidden if it were not for the journey. This defines his character and shows him to be not an admirable hero. Odysseus first shows this when he successfully escapes from the Cyclops’s home but made a drastic mistake and says: ‘O Cyclops!
