The best part of your decision was not only did you protect your license; you also protected the nurse’s license that made the suggestion. In addition, you found an alternative method to help better distribute the patient assignments and achieve the desired goal. The justification for working out of our scope of practice can be as simple as you said feeling “complimented”, but does not consider safety risk if something goes wrong. Another common hospital practice that places nurses in similar jeopardy is being pulled to a nursing unit deemed comparable. As behavioral health nurses (adult unit), we are required to cover our child and adolescent psychiatric unit (CAPU) when their below their staffing needs. Though all behavioral units have
There are three routes to entry level nursing, and two of these routes are at a collegiate level. Both of these collegiate level programs provide enough information for the graduate to take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam. However, there are critical differences between both programs that researchers have discovered eventually affect nursing care and outcomes of patients.
The result of this was detrimental to the patient. Once the nurse from my unit went in to assess the patient she observed that the patient had a severely infiltrated IV, leaving her arm swollen beyond belief. Her vitals also revealed that she was hypotensive, febrile and in respiratory distress unstable and rapidly becoming septic. Thankfully interventions were taken just in time and the patient ended up being transferred to the ICU where she received the care needed to save her life. Just imagine what the outcome could have potentially been for this patient. Clearly this patient’s life was put at risk due to others carelessness and inability to follow rules and guidelines. Talk about conflict!
During my clinical rotation during my last semester of nursing school, I was able to work one on one with a BSN degree nurse named Judy in the ICU. Judy had three years of experience in the ICU setting. She had been a medical surgical nurse prior to her ICU transfer. The ICU at this hospital consisted of two associate degree level nurses and two BSN level nurses on my shift. I rotated three days in this particular ICU. I worked with Judy all three days of my rotation. I was excited about being placed with her for she seemed knowledgeable and skilled. We were given a male post trauma patient to work with all three days. This patient was a 30 year old male admitted for trauma related injuries and was considered unstable and was to be monitored in ICU. This patient had been involved in a motor vehicle accident and
In the beginning of the meeting on September 18th the board addressed the investigative reports of CNA, RN, AP license holders due to specific acts these nurses did during practice that disregarded the regulation of the Nurse Practice Act. For example, David Dane Ryer was a RN and AP license holder. He was under investigation because he was prescribing himself different forms of medicine and was practicing outside of his scope of practice. He had a previous hearing with the board to discuss this issue and ended up walking out before the hearing was concluded. This action then confirmed for the board that he lack self-control and ultimately caused the board to revoke
Care Profession and it comprises more than 3 million registered nurses (RNs) in the United
Puts the patient at risk for injury, but also puts his or hers license in jeopardy. The practice of nursing requires specialized
An example of this might be a pediatric trauma patient. The patient is the victim of an accidental gunshot wound by a family member. The family lives on a farm outside of town and drove the victim to the closest hospital. The patient is being stabilized in this rural hospital and prepared for transport to the nearest Level 1 Trauma Center. This small hospital may not have the resources in place to adequately assist this family during a time of crisis. The ADN
The Scope of Practice describes the procedures, actions, and processes that a healthcare practitioner is permitted to undertake in keeping with the terms of their professional license (Wikipedia). Stories such as Delean Botkins’ is a primary example of why the Scope of Practice needs to be terminated once and for all. The Scope of Practice is causing a shortage of medical help, can cause more harm than good, inconsistent, unfair, and most of all, unnecessary. APN nurses should not only be able to, but should be encouraged to practice to the fullest extent of their education and
According to the scenario given in example 2, the new nurse on the unit is facing an ethical dilemma by being asked to violate the code of ethics. This scenario regarding the preceptor telling the nurse to violate policy and chart that blood draws were done correctly is violating provision 3. Specifically, if the nurse interjects and decides to not draw the blood cultures too close together and from the same site, it upholds provision 3.5 Protection of patient health and safety by acting on questionable practice. The American Nurses Association code of ethics (2015) states, “Nurses must be alert to and must take appropriate action in all instances of incompetent, unethical, illegal, or impaired practice or actions

Recognizing the power of the nurse is important for clinicians and practitioners to understand. Maintaining a profession image is paramount in not distorting the main focus, which is patient care. Additionally, considering prior to acting, who’s at risk, and whether or not the action will affect the therapeutic needs of the patient is helpful in avoiding and preventing boundary violations (Catlin, 2013). When boundary crossing occur nurses should proceed with caution as these are perceptive actions to violations, and it becomes difficult to remain objective after a crossing has
The BSN case manager is responsible for collaborating with the patient, physician, RN, CNA, family and other ancillary departments. She is also involved with the more complex aspects of the daily care and establishing a relationship with the patient and family.
A BSN represent a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing, while an ADN is an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Both degrees will qualify a person to take the same licensing exam NCLEX. There are several differences in the competency levels of these two-degree programs. BSN program is a four-year degree, which is knowledge, theory and research based and the emphasis is on the entire picture of the field of nursing. Exposing the nurse to human diversity and global perspective, health promotion, spiritual perspectives, ethical, legal, political, historical and social influences using liberal arts including biblical concepts for complete
Differences in behavioral health among various socioeconomic groups is one of the major challanges of public health and this can cause inequalities. International collaboration studies aim to identify opportunities for reducing health inequalities among European countries . Social campaigns, health reforms and tax policies are some policy areas of reducing health inequalities . Despite these efforts health promotion policies to improve social determinants of health failed to change and improve individuals behaviours about health . Health policy decision makers discussed a diverse health policy interventions that are brought together under a behavioral health .
When reflecting on the above situation I think it is clear that Emily had a responsibility to act. The act of falsifying training documents to increase staffing on the floor seems, at first glance, relatively benign. However, think of the backlash this could have not just operationally but to someone’s personal life. The impact a misinformed or inadequately trained nurse could have is profound as a simple wrong move could cost someone his or her life. Due to the severity of the situation and as a nurse, Emily had the responsibility to take action. Despite how unpopular a decision it was Emily did the right thing. Getting through the near-term negative backlash is easy in comparison to dealing with the long-term effect of not taking action.
