The non-profit agency I selected for my essay is one that is very familiar to me. Between my father and my husband, I have spent a total of thirty-two years as a military dependent. During those years, I became very familiar with the United States Organization (USO) and what it offers military service members and their families. The USO will always be a reminder of wonderful memories for me. I distinctly recall the time my brothers and I napped on the sofa at the Guam airport during an extended layover on our long journey to Okinawa, and when I tasted jager schnitzel for the first time while visiting a friend in Berlin. In my mind, the USO will always be a safe haven and a place of comfort for military members and their families. The USO …show more content…
Liabilities for the year ending December 2014 totaled $128,794,938. The bulk of the organization’s costs, over 90%, is compensation for program expenses it anticipates delivering. The organization has approximately three hundred paid staff , which accounts for 8% of the organization’s cost. The USO relies on its more than 40,000 volunteers to provide nearly half a billion hours of …show more content…
There are numerous watchdog organizations available that rate individual charities based on financial standings, dispersal of contributions, and transparency. According to Charity Navigator, a well-known independent American charity organization that monitors charity organization, the USO scores 73.73 out of 100 with a rating of 2 out of 4 stars. Any organization that rates four stars represents a grade of 60 or higher. The top score permitted is seventy (www.charitynavigator.org). The USO has played an important role in the lives of service members and their families for many years both during wartime and peace. Many famous Hollywood stars and entertainers volunteered their time to perform for military soldiers and their families both at home and over seas. The USO centers offer numerous services, recreation, and entertainment for military troops and their families. The centers are visited more than 6.9 million times every year. The USO vows to continue support of military members and their families as it has always done, now and in the future, by providing recreational activities and
Throughout history, war has been one of the few constants that has never changed, because of this many have tried to aid those affected by it. In America, the Department of Veterans Affairs(VA) was created in order to specifically help veterans as they return from their service overseas. However, a few decades ago, the VA seemed to have failed in their goal during arguably one of the most important wars in American history. The mission statement, originally spoken by President Abraham Lincoln was: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s Veterans.” The mission statement brings up values of integrity and loyalty to America’s veterans, however
Not many people would withstand having to go off to war knowing their life was on the line. There is much respect and gratitude inclined towards those who did and sacrificed everything they had. Our cordially veterans - the ones who fought and endured the bestial wars, the ones who knew they could fall at any moment, the ones who, despite the horror and fear
All of us make sacrifices, but consider the sacrifices made by veterans. How many soldiers willingly leave their worried families behind? Missing life’s experiences such as the birth of a baby or celebrating a favorite holiday impacts a veteran’s life in a way that we can hardly comprehend. Many years are spent without the comforts of their home and yet they still go out on the battlefield knowing their lives are at stake fighting to grant us our freedoms.
The issue that has been addressed throughout this study is veteran’s rights. The issue of veteran’s rights is still being pursued and is near and dear to me. Not only am I a veteran, but I come from a long line of men and women who have proudly worn the uniform in defense of our nation. Between the mindset of the American public, to the cases presented before Congress, this is an ongoing dilemma. Caring for our brothers and sisters in arms is the socially responsible thing to do. However, many roadblocks must be torn down before this can come to fruition.
due to the lack of membership and my reputation as the president of our colleges’ Model United Nations team I was asked to step into the vacant presidential position. I found that using the previously established model that the Student Veterans of America had branded was critical to our charters exponential growth from four members when I joined in spring 2015, to the 30 members when I graduated in spring 2017. During the inaugural year of the Diablo Valley College SVA Chapter-- the Veteran Resource Center (VRC) was constructed on DVC’s campus, creating a relaxing atmosphere for student-veterans, and providing a comfortable place to get the resources and support necessary to transition from soldiers to
My time spent with the wounded, ill, and injured soldiers has given me more compassion and respect for people that are suffering mentally and physically. By showing people that you care and that you have a vested interest in their future, can be beneficial in their recovery. This volunteer experience has helped me foster the way I will care for my future
Also, the children and young people should hear us speaking positively about their families and their families speaking positively about our service so that they feel comfortable and happy in both environment and are able to apply themselves and achieve.
College students and others can enhance the agency’s program by following my experience and volunteering and educating themselves on behavioral health. Raising money to provide resources needed to help the Cone Health team and their patients fight their issues would also substantially aide the program. Some of my top suggestions for fundraisers include a car wash on the weekend, a bake sale in the midst of a long-awaited sporting event, and selling bracelets that bring light to specific behavioral illnesses. (i feel as though something should be added to transition from this paragraph to the closing

Over seven decades USO has helped service members as they defend our country. USO represents the United Service Organization. This organization is a nonprofit organization that provides programs, services and live entertainment for United States service members and their families. The USO sends entertainment and love to the bases with our army officers. One example of live entertainment given to the officers is Caron Butler, Sam Perkins, Bob Delaney and WNBA’s Ivory Latta, who are NBA all stars head on a USO tour. The USO supports the families that have a family member away at a base or overseas.
The USO was established in 1941 by Franklin D. Roosevelt in response to the onset of World War II. He asked for private rather than government organizations to handle the entertainment of the military members and their families. This resulted in six civilian agencies answering the call, which resulted in the founding of the USO. The USO is not a government-run organization, but rather a privately funded, nonprofit organization that is chartered by Congress and operates by donations, grants, and private contributions. The organization’s primary mission is to boost the morale and emotional state of American military troops and their families by providing services, recreation, and entertainment. In its nearly seventy-five years of existence,
The ratio of Families per SFA is very high which is part of the problem; however, the SFA should be resourceful with their time in order to overcome this barrier. USAREC also has support staff within the Soldier Family Assistance program to assist with
Hearing the emotions behind their tone really spoke to me and how they wish they could provide more for their children and loved ones. Service members who are married and have children are granted a housing allowance to help pay for a place for them to stay. While talking with these families, I learned that the housing allowance is typically not enough to live in an typical middle income house or apartment. By having this opportunity, I was touched while also gaining a large amount of prospective onto what their lives are like.
As a non-profit organization, our company has been profoundly doing well in helping raise money for families. Being with an organization which is committed to providing assistance to families in impoverished towns is very generous. Although, there is a concern I would like to address regarding using certain data we are using in our annual reports. The company uses pie charts to display data and prefers one type of pie chart over the other. I feel that we should use the pie chart which demonstrates the percentages.
