I have elected to use the writing site wattpad for my creative writing piece as it is a site that has enthralled me since I first stumbled upon it. The site allows users to post a variety of written works. Including fanfiction, poems and short stories. The site gives everyday people with an interest in writing the platform needed to put their work out to the public. I have taken inspiration from the novel ‘stay close’ by Elyse Mason that I found whilst searching on wattpad for something to read on a long train trip. The narrative follows a teenage girl running from and trying to forget her past. It was this underlying theme of trying to run from your past that gave me the idea for my writing piece.
I have chosen plot as the main focus of my piece. Short stories place a large emphasis on the plot and a pressure to move the plot along in a timely manner without seeming rushed. The text The Giver by Lois Lowry uses third person limited as seen in the excerpt; “It was almost December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. No. Wrong word, Jonas thought. Frightened meant that deep, sickening feeling of something terrible about to happen.” The novel follows a teenager named Jonas who’s living in a world that is colourless. The world revolves around following rules until he begins to challenge the world he lives in and colour slowly starts to be visible. Lowry’s use of language is very descriptive and detailed, perplexing the reader and drawing them further into this black and white world. Jonas’s language is precise and considerate which further depicts the dull and rule binded world he live in. It is Lowry’s ability to convey this through descriptive words which subtly hint at the world he lives in opposed to harshly telling the readers which I am going to use throughout my
