One call to the police could save a life. For instance, Hugo Tale-Yax is but one example of a life that could have been saved if one person had called the police. Mr. Tale-Yax was a homeless person who was just trying to show an act of kindness. He witnessed a woman being attacked on the side of the street and during his attempt to try to help the woman he was stabbed in the chest. He staggered down the street desperate for someone to help him. Nevertheless, since everyone had failed to come to his aid he fell to the floor and lay there in a puddle of blood. More than 25 people walked past him on this busy New York street, but not a single one tried to help. A few people sat and stared and him; one even lifted his body up so that they could see what had happened. They immediately put him back down because …show more content…
Tale-Yax would still be with us today. Was it because Mr. Tale-Yax was homeless that people didn't stop to help? Homeless people are still people. It shouldn't matter what race, ethnicity, or social class a person is in. Everyone deserves to be helped in a time of danger. The Good Samaritan law should be put in place to prevent situations such as Mr. Tale-Yax’s from happening in the future. However, if the law is put into action it would require a few alterations. People shouldn’t be required to help physically. In my opinion, everyone who owns a cellular device should be required by law to contact the police in any dangerous situation. A person’s own morals and their mental state should allow them to decide for themselves whether or not they think they should step in and help. Most people today find it easier and are more comfortable dialing a number on their cell phone than to walk up to a stranger and do something kind that could potentially save their
In 1983, Raymond Carver introduced his short story “Cathedral” to the public. The first-person narrative takes place within the narrator’s home, where his wife is waiting upon the arrival of her blind friend Robert. The narrator, however, becomes more concerned about how Robert’s visit will affect him rather than enjoy the situation. Once Robert arrives, the narrator tries to understand the blind man, but he is unaware of what tasks Robert is capable of performing due to the narrator’s inability to “see”. In time, Robert shows the narrator the difference between looking and seeing through illustrations of a cathedral, drawn by the narrator with his eyes closed. “Cathedral’s” narrator exposes readers to anti-heroic views
In the Chapter “In the Unlikely Event of a Water Landing,” from the book Opening Skinner’s Box, by Lauren Slater. Slater describes a crime scene in which the witnesses didn’t do anything to help a woman that was being stabbed, she also tells us about a few experiments that were conducted in regards to how people would react when help is needed in certain situations, will they report the situation to anyone or just go about their business like nothing is going on. Calling for help or assisting someone in a time of need isn’t always something that people do as an immediate reaction, especially when there’s a crowd of people present.
Homeless people are of no particular ethnicity or race. Homelessness does not discriminate. There are many factors that cause people to end up homeless. According to Moses claims “Falling income and rapidly rising housing cost have forced an unprecedented number of the lowest income families- seven out of ten nationally- to spend half or more of their earnings on rent” (2016, p. 23). Since so much of a person or families income is going to housing there is very little left for food or medical care. Many people end up homeless because they need to eat or their children need to eat. The people who fall through the cracks are the people who make too much money to receive assistance but not enough money to make ends meet. Some homeless people are homeless by choice in a way, for instance runaway adolescent are often homeless because they left home for one reason or another but are not old enough to work to support themselves or cannot find a job that pays well enough to support
Being an athletes is one of the best-paid jobs on Earth. Being that they are paid so much the cost for the consumer is very high. The prices of tickets and sports memorabilia have been steadily rising over the years. The average ticket prices for the NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL all rose 5% to 10% this year, according to Jon Greenberg, executive editor of Team Marketing Report. (Mihoces).
They both had taken cover in the ovegrowth and the fox was now in clear view.
Homeless people are people too. Everyday I see people poking and ridiculing the homeless. What most people don't comprehend is that they once had something going for them, at one time they have succeeded at something. Everyone has depended on something in a time of desperation, binge-eating, social media, avid tv watcher, so who are we to judge? That person you just threw that soda can at, that's someone's mother, child, aunt, uncle, father, grandchild. A homeless person isn't less of a person, think of how much misery and heart ache they have to go through daily, and you wanna be a rotten person and add even more? Everyone struggles and hurts, so why can't you see that homeless people hurt too? Everyone has made a few wrong turns, some are
With NFL Players kneeling everywhere and soldiers feeling unappreciated, our country is in shock. It all started by a player named Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, in 2016. This event persuaded numerous NFL players to continue this process. One by one, players all over the league began to protest to call attention to the issues of "racial inequalities and police brutality". With mixed reviews of this protest, I believe that kneeling during the National Anthem of the United States of America is disrespectful because it is abrasive, selfish, and hurtful. Also, I am not sure that all of those protesting in this manner know the true meaning of our national anthem or the flag that represents our freedom.
In the world, it is so easy to walk past an individual that is in distress without even knowing that there is something wrong. People notice something and expect the individual in front of or behind them to assist the distressed, and it happens more than often. For example, driving past an individual that is stranded on the side of the road is so simple. It is much easier to drive past than assist, especially when driving on a city street. Many people think about helping, and want to help, but they just do not.
Homelessness is a universal issue. A Homeless Person can come in any shape, size, age, gender, sexuality, and especially color. From someone to African descent all the way to something with ancestors from Asia, nobody is exempt from struggle and anyone can end up homeless whether they want to be or not.
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump, has been under fire in the aftermath of possible collusion. Kushner has gone under investigation after emails were leaked of a Russian meeting and is being interviewed to get information. The dishonesty of Kushner, has shaken the trust within the government and the incriminating evidence keeps surfacing as the interviews conclude. The news focused on the four meetings that occurred during the 2016 presidential campaign, and the main people that were involved in the meeting.
Imagine you get attacked while in your car, in the middle of heavy traffic, on your way to work. The attacker had a knife and baseball bat. They break open your window with the baseball bat, drop it, and start to stab at you. You get cut, and start to scream for help. But none of the hundreds of others come to you aid. They quickly disperse, causing an accident, and leave you on your own to die. You get cut at the heart, and thrown out of the car, left to die. “Why didn’t they help him?” many other people would think. The answer to that is something called the bystander effect. The Bystander Effect is when someone who is capable of helping another person in danger, does nothing but idly stand by, watching the event happen.

I believe homeless people should be helped by giving them useful resources, encouraging them to get an education, and guiding them to opportunities they can reference to succeed on their own.
If you're like most people, despite wintery conditions, you still have places to be and people to see. Although snowy weather can be a beautiful sight to see, it can also be frightful if it turns into an icy mix – making for difficult travel conditions.
“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
