MOMMIE DEAREST ANALYSIS Psychological Disorders of Joan Crawford Kueter, Drew Psychology Mrs. McAleer EICC Mommie Dearest Analysis In the movie Mommie Dearest Joan Crawford shows many different types of personality disorders. Personality disorders are a deeply engrained or maladaptive pattern of behavior of a specified kind, typically they occur by the time one reaches adolescents and causes difficulty in personal relationships or society. Studying these psychological disorders can help us to identify and properly treat these abnormal functions that we acquire as we grow older. One way to learn how to identify these disorders is through movie analysis. When you are able to recognize these disorders through a movie they stick out in the real world much more. The disorders that I analyzed that Joan Crawford had were, Bipolar, Borderline, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Narcissism. Throughout the movie Joan Crawford shows many examples of being bipolar. Bipolar is a disorder in which a person’s mood changes from depression to elation and back again. (Rathus 2010). Joan Crawford shows this in her movie more than one time, the first time she shows it she finds out that she has just received the role she was hoping to get and then finds her daughter playing with her makeup. When she finds her daughter imitating her and she freaks out because she doesn’t like her acting like her so she instantly goes from excitement to almost killing her daughter and cutting her hair all the way off. That is a clear example of bipolar because she starts out very joyful and ends up very angry. In the movie, she goes outside to thank all of her fans for receiving the award and it very proud and happy then goes up to see her daughter and finds out she has a wire hanger and beats her with the wire hanger. This is an example because she is very happy then instantly almost kills her daughter. Those are the two most supporting examples that I found from the movie and they show the example of bipolar very good. In the movie Joan Crawford shows multiple examples of being borderline, which is a disorder in characterized by unstable moods, behavior, and relationships. (Mayo Clinic 2017). This can be a hard disorder to find because
What is Borderline Personality Disorder? Defined by the website www.borderlinepersonalitydisorder.com, “Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness that causes unstable moods, behavior, and relationships. It usually begins during adolescence or early adulthood.” One may wonder what can be the cause of this disorder. BPD can be detected by an in-person interview about the symptoms that are occurring. The input from family and close friends of the individual that is being treated can also help detect the symptoms. The causes for BPD are not fully
Borderline personality disorder is defined as the individual having severe instability in moods, relationships, and behavior. Some symptoms are alcohol or drug abuse, intense bouts of anger, depression, or sadness for an extended period of time, and self-injury. While it is unclear, many psychologists speculate that some causes of borderline personality disorder are genetics and environmental factors, along with childhood abuse or abandonment. (Psychology Today 2017). Joan Crawford grew up with her parents separated and three step-fathers throughout her adolescence, working small jobs until she made her break in the early 1920’s. Her strive to succeed may have been driven by these factors, which in turn could have caused her outbursts throughout the movie, Mommie Dearest because all the factors point to BPD. A scene that shows that Joan is affected by BPD is where Joan and Christina fight near the pool and Joan locked Christina into the pool house where Joan races with Christina in the pool to show off and proceeds to race Christina because she knows she will win. After Joan wins again, Christina gets an attitude with her and Joan instantly loses it, causing her to have a manic episode and lock Christina in the pool house to “teach her a lesson on
“No wire hangers!” What would be a normal thing to find in an average persons home is not accepted in Joan Crawford’s home. This posses the question why in the movie Mommie Dearest does Mrs. Crawford have a dilemma with wire hangers in her closet? Why does she have so many mental complications in general? Although to the public, Joan seems like a striving successful actress she obviously has some underlying issues. She has developed her personality disorders her whole life, but how she got them is a mystery. Most people develop personality disorders from their parents or how they are raised. This is most likely the case with Joan Crawford, but no one really knows since she is diseased. Joan has four major personality disorders within the movie; Obsessive-compulsive, Bipolar, Borderline, and Narcissistic personality disorder.
Without any dispute, the 1992 feature film "Single White Female" is an excellent example of a psychological "thriller", which it was initially touted as and seemingly confirmed by grossing several million dollars. However, the one particular aspect of this film that truly confirms to the label of psychological is the characterization of Hedy Carlson, who functions extremely well as a case study for Borderline Personality Disorder. By definition, Borderline Personality Disorder is a condition in which someone exhibits "A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts"¦" (APA 2000). A fairly comprehensive examination of Hedy's actions and personality within "Single White Female" lends credible evidence that she is in fact suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, and also alludes to forms of treatment that may be of assistance in any attempts to counteract the effects of this condition.
Psychological disorders are very real and present in many people we come in contact with daily, however, are very rarely talked about. Learning about these disorders can help us to understand others and ourselves better by telling us why we do and think the things we do. One effective way that we can observe and learn about psychological disorders is through movies. “Mommie Dearest” was directed by Frank Perry. It is centered around the actress Joan Crawford, who suffered from various psychological disorders. Joan’s daughter, Christina, wrote a book about her mother and her many problems and it was later turned into a movie. It is very effective to use movie analysis as a way of learning, especially in psychology, because it provides a great way to observe without distractions. When you’re looking at disorders, it’s difficult to find a person who has many of these disorders and will allow you to observe them. Psychological disorders can be split into two major groups, personality disorders and mood disorders. Personality disorders are patterns of traits that can get in the way of your social or work life and may interrupt the individual’s normal lifestyle. Mood disorders are inconsistent and unreliable changes in mood by the affected individual. (Rathus, 1998). With all of this being said, it brings me to my point that I will be talking about for the rest of this essay. Joan Crawford demonstrates the personality disorders of histrionic, narcissism, and OCPD. When it comes to mood disorders, Joan demonstrates bipolar disorder.
Another disorder that is portrayed in the character of Joan Crawford is Bipolar disorder. Throughout the movie Joan experiences cycles of extreme
Throughout life, people will meet others who are different from them. People have different backgrounds, ethnicities, lifestyles, etc. Everyone is unique in their own way. In some situations, people will act very different, according to their personality. Some people are not patient and will react angrily to certain things, while others will act calmly. For example, a person with a narcissistic personality disorder, will think that they always need attention. They also may be preoccupied with fantasies of their own success, power, intelligence, or beauty. Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) is someone who looks as if she has this
Personality disorders are the maladaptive way of thinking and behaving that can interfere with the individuals’ personal relationships and their integration to society. An individual who suffers from a personality disorder would typically behave and think outside of the societies’ norms. Although, there are ten personality disorders, in this essay we will be analyzing and focusing on the borderline personality disorder and its portrayal in the popular film, Silver Linings Playbook.
What does life with borderline personality disorder look like? A prime example would be Misery by Stephen King, the classic psychological thriller. Annie Wilkes, one of the main characters in the film, exhibits multiple signs and symptoms of having a psychological illness, making her subject to diagnosis. Through Annie’s behavior and emotional instability, it is evident that she has borderline personality disorder. This paper will provide a proper treatment plan and prognosis for her illness.
One personality disorder Joan Crawford demonstrated was bipolar. This disorder can be defined as periods of reckless behavior and hyperactivity that can change at any given second (Rathus, 2010). There are several occasions throughout the movie that show Joan suffering through this disorder, for example one moment she would be a cheerful, smiling mom and at a drop of a hat, it would change for the worst making her become an angry and aggressive toward her child Christina. This can be seen when Joan is kissing her sweet daughter Christina goodnight, and then looks through the closet where she finds a dress hung by a wire hanger. Joan’s behavior quickly becomes elevated, ripping all of the clothes and hangers out of the closet, yelling at Christina, which then leads Joan to beat her daughter with the hanger. Another example is in the scene
9.6 percent of the United States population have a mental disorder and 1.6 percent have borderline personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness that shows symtoms of not being able to regulate emotional responses and moods, impacting self image, relationships and behavior (National Institute of Mental Health,2016). The National Institute of Mental Health states that borderline personality disorder is experienced in a person when they are overwhelmed with emotions in the cognitive functioning. Symptoms of a person with borderline personality disorder could include explosive amount of anger, depression, and anxiety. People with borderline personality disorder could also have other mental disorders such as mood
“Personality disorders have been documented in approximately 9 percent of the general U.S. population” (Angstman, Rasmussen, 2011). Emotional dysregulation disorder or its common name borderline personality disorder is a very serious and chronic disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) describes borderline personality disorder as “a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity that begins by early adulthood and is present in a variety of contexts” (Gardner, 2006). Within the last 20 years, psychologists and other mental health professionals have made tremendous strides in research on what exactly borderline personality disorder, some of its triggers and possible effective treatment options. Borderline personality disorder is defined as a disorder that generates severe emotional instability which can be a springboard that can lead to other stress induced mental and behavioral problems.
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious and complex mental disorder involving maladaptive behaviors and multiple symptoms. This disorder often occurs in the context of relationships and can have a chaotic effect not only on the individual with BPD but also on their loved ones. According to the NIMH, “borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by unstable moods, behavior, and relationship”.9 A primary character of BPD is behavioral and emotional dysregulation. These behaviors are difficult
According to the DSM-5, Personality Disorders are characterized by “impairments in personality functioning and the presence of pathological personality traits”. Borderline Personality Disorder is one of ten personality disorders listed in the DSM-5. The DSM-5 lists several criteria that must be met in order for someone to be diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. They are quoted as follows:
Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) include a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and is marked impulsivity. BPD begins in early adulthood and is present in a variety of contexts. Alice Klieg displays 6 of
