Week 2: January 17-23 Michael D. Bayles “The Professions” In Michael D. Bayles “The Professions”, Bayles describes the basic characteristics of a profession. Instead of providing a single definition Bayles instead defines the term profession based on three basic characteristics due to the complex meaning of the term. The three characteristics he identified that all professions must have include: extensive training, intellectual component included in the training, and must provide important service in society. Based on these characteristics that Bayles identifies I believe my profession of a teacher strongly correlates with Bayles definition of the term profession. I think most people agree that education is an important service to society, however in recent years there has been a shift in how individuals will receive an education. There are a growing number of students who are completing their education through online sources or through homeschooling. Because a student can receive an education through other sources do teachers still provide a necessary service to society? I believe that teachers do provide a necessary service to society because of the extensive training we receive and the other services we provide outside of education. The extensive training we receive allows us to provide the tools, advise, and services to students in order to be successful this is something that is hard to provide through online schooling or homeschooling because of the limited teacher to student interaction. I also believe that teachers serve many different roles in young person’s life, although we are educators we can also be sources of guidance and comfort to a student’s life. As professional teachers, we are trained to serve the student in a multitude of ways, and if we are unable to provide a specific service we are trained to direct them to someone who can serve the student. Profession is a paid occupation that requires a long period of intense training to become an expert in a particular field. Professionals provide a service. Teaching is an extremely important profession as we are responsible for training up the future generations of our community, country and in effect, the world. In order to be a successful and effective teacher there are some basic skills and competencies that one must possess. The experiences that students have inside (and outside) our classrooms, schools and various other institutes will shape and mould their approach to our subjects and to life in general. Avis et al (2010) state that historically, only occupations such as Doctors, Solicitors, the Clergy and Bank Managers were worthy of the title of being called a “Professional”. However they go on to say that this has changed over time to the point whereby much more diverse groups are describing themselves within the category of being professional to the point that the term becomes meaningless. That said, they do agree that a professional should hold a set of specific skills and knowledge that are gained through a certain amount of training and “should be used for the benefit of society”. Teachers, lecturers and trainers clearly fit within this remit. Scales (2008) lists professionalism as one of the traits of an effective teacher. He goes on the say that professionalism is multi-faceted, citing the way teachers behave, look, the way interact with their students, how they talk and how they prepare and plan their work all form what he believes makes a professional.
I do agree with the examples that I have provided and here’s why. I think education in the country has come along way in our history. There was a time where children were cramped in a small one room house being taught basic information, while the children who’s family’s couldn’t afford shoes, pencils or books were forced to work at a young age helping out the family on the farm, or working in a factory.
In conclusion, the education system exists to provide all kinds of functions to society, as well as allocation roles for young people that they will continue to have in the workforce;
There are several different concepts surrounding the topic of education but most problematic is in regards to the aims of education within society. With several aims proposed by educational philosophers there is confusion surrounding what education is for and which type of education best suits the individual. Lewis (2015) posed that education promotes student learning and potential as well as fostering of community and self esteem within a school environment. Overall education is the defining product of good citizens in contemporary society, with diverse cultures, social norms and political standpoints. Liberal, vocational and wellbeing education will be discussed throughout arguing that a combined approach to education is most relevant within modern society. The ethical obligations for teachers within education will also be discussed.
Education is a very important part of society. I feel that it should teach children how to function in a society, and learn the basics they will need to expand on for the rest of their life. I feel that it is used to teach moral, and ethical standards of living. The schools are used to help the children learn to function in life, and achieve the goals of their choosing. Education is important because without it I firmly believe that society would be a very savage institution. With the things that we teach in today’s schools we give the power to know the basics such as reading, writing, and math but we also give them the ability to function in a society. As a teacher I hope to set my student of fire. I want to see them come alive with a desire to want everything that is out there for them. I want to be able to make a difference in just one person’s life. If I can do this I would feel I have done what I am supposed to do. I want my students to know the world is theirs to take and do with it whatever they may choose.
During normal usage, it seems that the terms “profession” and “occupation” are almost identical and are interchangeable. Generally they both define the work people do for a living. However, after delving into their meanings, one can easily notice that the word profession is a bit more advanced than occupation. In other words, there are peculiar criteria or characteristics that an occupation has to meet in order to qualify as a profession.
Education can bring these individual talents to the surface. Having these talents developed by the way of the educational system, a person is more likely to become a productive member of society. Without these gifts and talents of individuals, answers in the medical, environmental, and social fields could remain mute and unexplored. Education has the responsibilities to bring out the best in each individual. The needs of society are continually changing. Therefore, education must also continue to change in order to productive responsible members of society.
Education is not limited to instruction from society but through interaction and experiences as well. We are called to educate ourselves as well as others through the transmission of values and through communication. Hence, it is through loving and caring for our neighbors where we fulfill ourselves as educators to society.

Education is a key element that directs one's life to success. By having knowledge one holds the power to make goals a reality. What is a profession? First and foremost let’s look at how we can define a profession from a general point. A profession is an occupation requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation. The first purpose of education is opening a child’s eyes to the world around them. I believe in order for a child to be fully immersed in education, the parents, and the teachers, must be fully dedicated to make a lasting impact on a child. The parents need to start teaching the child at a young age and help the child strengthen their abilities throughout the years. This is similar to what a teacher needs to do. However, teachers have the tough, and wonderful, job of filling a child up with new information as well as strengthening their current abilities. As a future teacher in today’s society and generation, I believe the educational system must accommodate the individual and the diverse needs of each child. Many factors should be thought about when forming a philosophy on education. Factors as far as the increase of single parent families and dual careers, the family structure is changing and this may play a significant part in our students.
