Imagine living with a mental illness that affects your everyday life but has no physical aspects to it. Waging a war within your own head and not being able to control your own thoughts or feelings. Millions of adolescence throughout the United States are currently sick, living with a mental illness with no idea how to treat it, or even the idea they are sick. Mental Health services on campus may be the answer to treating the diseases many children are suffering from. Mental health is defined as our emotional psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. Mental health also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Maintaining healthy mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence and throughout adulthood. People suffering from mental health disorders often see a change in their mood, thinking and behavior. One in 5 Americans adults experience a mental health issue. One in 10 young people experienced a period of major depression. And 1 in 20 Americans lived with a serious mental health illness (Mental Health Myths and Facts). It is estimated that one in every five youth experience mental illnesses that interfere with their everyday routines (“NAMI”). Mental health in the United States is a growing epidemic that needs to be solved. Youth with mental illnesses may never know that they have one; screenings for mental health are not something a lot of people take advantage of. Schools are a place where youth develop the most. In order for this to happen, society needs to make schools feel welcoming and provide support for those who need help. While some people do not believe mental illnesses exist, schools should require mental health screenings in order to prevent future violent situations, educate their staff, and do more to make students feel comfortable.
Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety have been attributed to several factors such as excessive stress, genetic predisposition, biochemical imbalances, and even sociocultural status. As with other diseases, mental illnesses are often manifested through a combination of physical as well as emotional symptoms.
Mental health is being aware, accepting yourself, and striking a balance in all aspects of your life like social, spiritual, physical, economical, and mental (Association, 2001). Mental health can be described as our positive interactions with the context and events in our life, and having the ability to cope with life’s stressors. Mental health problems can begin at anytime during your life (CAMH, 2010). In fact anything can make it difficult for an individual’s ability to interact effectively, and may lead into a mental health problem (Association, 2001).
The issue of mental health has recently become an important issue throughout America, especially with young adults. College campuses are critical to a majority of these young adults, and their environment on them are extremely important for creating a healthy and safe place for them to live and grow. At the University of Nevada, Reno, students need more opportunities and better resources in order to thrive both as students and as people. Throughout this proposal, there have been suggestions that, if put in place, can improve the Student Health Center and in return, benefit the students of the university. By collaborating more directly with students, focusing more on participation, and broadening their outreach, the Student Health Center will
Do you feel that colleges can be unsafe for their students? Many colleges have had violent issues in the past on their campuses like rape, murder, robbery, and even suicide. They have always been an issue to address, and more people have been finding out which has caused them to gain concerns for their kids heading to college. College campuses can be dangerous for enrolling students, and most people do not even know or pay attention to why these things occur. These problems are mainly mental illnesses caused by coursework, alcohol, and one of the most important ones, being kept a secret from the public and since these problems have risen people have been figuring out ways to reduce them from happening and better ways to keep students safe.
The community public health meeting will be about mental health on college campuses. Mental health on college campuses has become a more prominent topic in today’s society, especially due to the increase in media coverage of college students committing acts of violence on college campuses (e.g., Virginia Tech shooting). In turn, people want to address and stop horrible events from ever happening again. Colleges across the nation are encountering significant increases in students seeking help for their psychological problems, for example, anxiety and depression. Students have become overwhelmed with rising tuition costs, student debt, and discouraging job markets. The increase
Sound mental health helps us to live our lives wholesomely and with a sense of well being. Though this seems to be an adult state of mind, how we have been brought up and conditioned through our growing years plays an important role. Mental strength means we are confident of dealing with anything that's happens. Chronic stress and anxiety is banished since we are confident of our ability to handle life as it comes. Even though life is uncertain we are assured that we can work it out. However, how many of us actually feel this way? Rather we find ourselves wondering and questioning if we will be able to manage life situations like our work, finances, families etc.

More than 40% of college students struggle with mental illness and less than 60% of college campuses have a licensed psychiatrist available to these students. If these students don’t have anyone to help them how are they able to power through the semester of college and how are they supposed to be succeed? However, many people don’t see the difference between having a licensed psychiatrist and a grad student studying to be a psychiatrist, which many campuses have, deal with students. Although I concede the fact that having some help for students with mental illness on campus (the graduate students) I insist that having more than just the grad students should be available because a grad student cannot prescribe medication to students nor offer real professional help, and considering students with mental illness probably will not

Mental health conglomerates our six senses and is responsible for the way we develop and associate in the society. therefore, this determines the way we deal with stress, associate with others and make rational choices. And so, this is important due to the fact that it is a major factor that affects the way we develop from an infant age to an adult age. Consequently, it will determine if we develop a mental health problem by affecting the way we rationalize, act, and behave. In addition, there is many instances that will determine if we attain a mental illness such as; biological factors, life experiences, trauma, and physical or mental abuse.
With the amount of stigma surrounding mental health in the United States, mental health initiatives help prevent long-term problems and amplify the outreach and aid most adolescents receive for their disorders.
